In OBS, watch the Audio Mixer meter for the intended ambient source, listen to the feed both before and after it reaches OBS, and check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. A moving meter confirms that OBS is receiving a signal; it does not prove the sound is clean, balanced, or audible to viewers. For a 24/7 stream, these checks complement one another, and none should be mistaken for an unattended silence alarm.
Set up monitoring before the stream goes live
- Show the right source in OBS. Open the Audio Mixer and identify the channel carrying the birds and forest audio. Play the actual source and confirm its meter moves. OBS’s guide recommends keeping an eye on the meters: OBS Audio Mixer Guide.
- Check stereo routing. OBS defaults to stereo. If the recording is intended to be stereo, make sure both channel meters move. OBS notes that if only the first stereo meter moves, viewers will hear the source only in the left channel unless routing or downmixing is changed.
- Listen at two points. First listen through the source device’s headphone or monitor output. Then listen through OBS Audio Monitoring to check the signal after it reaches OBS. Adjust at the source device first, then check the operating-system level and OBS fader. A visible meter cannot reveal every audible problem.
- Record and review a representative session. OBS recommends recording a session and listening back before going live. Use the actual nature audio and intended video, not silence or a substitute sound.
- Test the real stream setup. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video similar to the planned stream before going live, then monitoring stream health during the event. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
Read the OBS meters correctly
The moving colored bar in OBS is a peak meter. Its peak-hold marker preserves the highest level for 20 seconds, so a brief transient may remain visible after the sound itself has passed. OBS describes green, yellow, and red meter zones; red is near clipping, and clipping causes distortion. The guide’s general suggestions—for example, speech in the lower red region and background music or alerts in green—are not numeric targets for quiet birds-and-forest ambience. Use your ears as well as the display. Details are in OBS’s meter guide.
OBS’s technical description gives an alignment level of -20 dBFS and a permitted maximum level of -9 dBFS for its meter. These are OBS meter reference values, not a YouTube loudness requirement or a guarantee that every downstream stage is free of problems. OBS also describes a smaller VU-style indicator based on RMS integrated over 300 ms; it can help show average energy, but OBS says it is less useful than a proper loudness meter. See OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details.
Check signal, sound, and delivery while live
- Signal: Confirm the intended source meter continues to move. If the input indicator disappears, OBS is not receiving audio from that source. That cue does not identify the cause: the source might not be playing, or connected audio equipment may have disconnected.
- Sound: Periodically listen to the actual program feed through a headphone or monitor output. A source can show activity while sounding wrong. Listening catches problems only while someone is listening; it is not an automatic alert.
- Delivery: Check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room, as YouTube recommends. Stream health concerns delivery to YouTube; it does not assure that the ambience is balanced or pleasant.
- Peaks: Watch the peak-hold marker for unexpected transients. A marker near red warrants listening and checking the source and gain path for distortion.
What loudness numbers do—and do not—tell you
Peak level and perceived programme loudness answer different questions. For standardized programme measurements, EBU Mode defines momentary loudness over 400 ms, short-term loudness over 3 seconds, and integrated loudness from start to stop. EBU R 128 recommends -23 LUFS ±0.2 LU, or ±1 LU for live programmes. That is broadcast guidance, not a YouTube target for a continuous nature stream. The EBU’s streaming supplement says streaming services typically use target loudness levels higher than broadcast standards; it does not establish a birds-and-forest YouTube target. See the EBU loudness guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube’s encoder settings page lists 128 Kbps stereo audio and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate. Those are encoding settings, not loudness targets: they do not tell you whether the ambience is too quiet, distorted, or pleasant to listen to.
Optional: add a loudness dock in OBS
The OBS Forums resource page lists Loudness Dock 0.5.1, which provides momentary, short-term, and integrated loudness, loudness range (LRA), and true peak for audio track 1. The page lists OBS Studio 28.0.0 as the minimum version and Windows, macOS, and Linux as supported platforms; it reports an update dated 2026-02-03. Check the resource page for compatibility before installing: Loudness Dock. The listed readings add loudness context; the page does not establish unattended silence or level alerts.

Troubleshoot common monitoring problems
- The meter is still, but audio should be playing: Confirm playback has started, then check that OBS is monitoring the intended source and that its device or interface is connected. A missing input indicator means audio is not reaching OBS, but does not pinpoint why.
- Only the left channel moves: Check the recording and OBS routing. For an intended stereo source, viewers may hear only the left channel if the second channel is not reaching the output and the signal has not been downmixed.
- The meter moves, but the audio sounds distorted: Listen at the source output and again through OBS. Check for red or unexpectedly high peaks and reduce level at the source first, then review operating-system and OBS levels.
- The meter moves, but the stream sounds too quiet: Listen to the program feed rather than judging only by the meter. Check the source-device level, operating-system level, and OBS fader in that order, then make another representative recording and listen back.
- YouTube reports a stream-health issue: Treat it as a delivery problem to investigate separately from whether the ambience sounds right. Keep checking the actual audio feed as well as YouTube’s health view.
Run the stream without keeping a computer on
