You can use FFmpeg on a VPS to send a continuous prerecorded music stream to YouTube, but the setup needs more than a looping command: you need streaming rights for the specific recordings and compositions, a correctly configured YouTube stream, and a tested way to supervise and recover the encoder. YouTube documents the ingest and encoder settings; the sources available here do not establish a verified FFmpeg command, restart strategy, VPS size, or cost, so those details must be validated before you rely on a 24/7 broadcast.
Before you stream Marathi songs
Confirm that you have permission to livestream both the musical compositions and the particular sound recordings in your playlist. The necessary rights can depend on the recordings, territories, and license terms. A personal music subscription, or the fact that FFmpeg can send the audio, does not establish permission to retransmit it. The sources cited here do not resolve which licenses apply to any particular Marathi playlist; check with the relevant rights holders or collecting societies and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies before going live.
Also decide what the viewer will see. This workflow concerns prerecorded material sent as a YouTube live stream, not a camera broadcast. Test with audio and video representative of the planned stream; YouTube specifically advises testing with similar audio and video movement.
Set up the YouTube live stream
- Enable live streaming in advance. YouTube Help says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available. Do not leave activation until the day you intend to launch.
- Create or schedule a broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. YouTube provides the server ingest URL and stream key there.
- Choose the RTMPS endpoint. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted form of RTMP. Use the RTMPS URL shown for your stream rather than substituting an endpoint from another setup. Google’s developer documentation describes TLS, port 443, and SNI requirements for RTMPS clients.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or put it in a public script repository. Enter it only in the encoder configuration and restrict access to that configuration.
When the encoder begins sending content, YouTube says a watch page is created. An API-based setup is also possible, but YouTube’s Live Control Room instructions are the creator-facing route for creating a stream and retrieving its ingest details.

Build the FFmpeg-on-VPS workflow
The broad process is to make the playlist and video source available on a remote server, configure FFmpeg to send that output to the stream’s RTMPS ingest URL using the private key, and keep the encoder process supervised. The YouTube documentation supports the ingest workflow, but it does not provide a complete FFmpeg recipe for looping a Marathi playlist, handling transitions, or restarting a failed process.
- Prepare the media. Organize only recordings you are authorized to stream. Check that the files are accessible to the VPS and that the chosen video output matches what you plan to show. Playlist order, gapless playback, crossfades, and behavior at the end of the list depend on your FFmpeg implementation and media; verify each with the documentation for the FFmpeg version you install.
- Select a VPS only after checking sustained-use terms. Confirm the provider permits continuous outbound streaming, review bandwidth or traffic charges, CPU and memory allowances, server region, and service terms. No VPS provider, price, or resource size is established by the sources here, so avoid choosing a plan on an assumed bitrate or uptime guarantee.
- Configure the encoder from YouTube’s stream details. Use the RTMPS address and key displayed for this broadcast. Keep credentials out of logs and public files. The exact command-line flags and quoting for a playlist depend on your input format and FFmpeg build; verify them against current FFmpeg documentation instead of treating an untested command as a production-ready 24/7 setup.
- Arrange process supervision and recovery. A VPS keeps the host remote from your home computer, but it does not by itself prove that FFmpeg will restart after an error or reconnect after a dropped connection. Choose and test a process supervisor, logging, alerting, and recovery behavior for your operating system and FFmpeg build. No particular service file, reconnect option, or restart interval is established here.
- Run a representative test before announcing the stream. Check that audio is present, the video behaves as intended, the stream reaches YouTube, and YouTube’s Live Control Room reports healthy stream status. Review encoder output and YouTube messages while the test runs; fix issues before relying on the setup unattended.
Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Its general recommendation is a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS or network path can sustain the stream.

| Setting | YouTube guidance | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 | Choose a codec supported by your FFmpeg build and suited to the actual visual output. Confirm the corresponding YouTube bitrate recommendation. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps | Use a rate appropriate to the video you are sending; an audio-led stream does not automatically need 60 fps. |
| Rate control | CBR recommended | Configure constant bitrate for the selected output and verify the encoder is maintaining it. |
| Keyframes | Two-second interval recommended; no more than four seconds | Set and check the interval for the chosen frame rate and encoder configuration. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 | Check that the output audio codec is accepted and that playback is clean during the test. |
| Stereo audio | 44.1 kHz; 128 kbps recommended | Use these as YouTube’s recommended stereo settings, then listen to a representative test output. |
Bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec, so there is no one figure to apply to every stream. As examples, YouTube lists 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/60 fps and 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at 1080p/60 fps. These are recommended ingest settings for those specific modes, not evidence that a VPS connection will reliably sustain them. Check YouTube’s current settings table for the exact mode you choose, then test the full path.
Plan around stream duration and archives
YouTube Help states that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That threshold matters when planning a continuous channel: the documentation does not establish what happens to archives of longer streams, nor does it prescribe a method for running an uninterrupted broadcast beyond that boundary. Do not assume that one broadcast will run forever, that a particular restart schedule is reliable, or that longer streams will be archived in a specific way. Verify the behavior in your own channel and plan any broadcast boundaries accordingly.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
- You cannot start a live stream: If this is the channel’s first live broadcast, activation may still be pending; YouTube says it can take up to 24 hours. Check Live Control Room availability before diagnosing FFmpeg.
- The encoder cannot connect: Recheck the stream-specific RTMPS URL and key, confirm the VPS can reach the selected endpoint, and verify the client’s TLS/SNI behavior against Google’s RTMPS guidance. Never solve a connection issue by exposing the key.
- YouTube reports a stream-health problem: Inspect the Live Control Room message and encoder logs. Recheck the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current settings guidance; then repeat a representative test.
- The broadcast stops when FFmpeg exits: A remote host does not equal automatic process recovery. Review the FFmpeg exit reason and your supervisor configuration; test recovery deliberately rather than assuming it works.
- The playlist goes silent, ends, or changes unexpectedly: Check the media paths and playlist behavior with the specific FFmpeg build and input format. Looping and crossfade behavior are implementation details not established by YouTube’s encoder instructions.
- A stream works technically but receives a music claim or restriction: Revisit the rights for both the composition and recording, the territories and uses covered, and YouTube’s current policies. Successful ingest is not proof that the music is authorized.
Account for the real cost of a VPS setup
The total cost is not just the VPS subscription. Check the host’s current price and sustained outbound-traffic terms, plus any storage, bandwidth, or support charges relevant to your playlist and chosen output. The sources available here do not establish a VPS price, a required server size, or an outbound traffic estimate, so compare provider quotes and terms directly rather than relying on a generic estimate. Also budget time to maintain the operating system, encoder, playlist, and recovery process.
