The answer depends on what the laptop must do, its condition, your internet connection and power, and whether the setup recovers cleanly from interruptions. A basic NGINX RTMP relay is a different workload from encoding or transcoding video. Test the complete setup with the stream you intend to run; a successful connection is not proof of 24/7 reliability.
What the laptop is being asked to do
Run NGINX as an RTMP server or relay
NGINX’s RTMP module is a media-streaming module. Depending on your configuration, NGINX can receive or forward a stream; the module itself is not the same thing as a video encoder. F5’s documentation covers installing, loading, configuring, testing and reloading the dynamic module, including packaging for NGINX Plus. The exact installation steps vary by operating system and package, so use the instructions for your own system rather than assuming one set of commands applies everywhere: F5 NGINX RTMP documentation.
Encode or transcode video
YouTube describes an encoder as software on a computer or standalone hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. If your old laptop also captures, encodes or transcodes the video, that is a separate workload from running NGINX. Don’t infer that a laptop capable of running NGINX can also encode your chosen resolution and frame rate reliably.
For a prerecorded-video channel, identify where playback and encoding actually happen, as well as whether the laptop only relays an already encoded stream. The more work it must perform, the less useful “it connected once” is as a measure of suitability.

Use YouTube’s current ingest and encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. The applicable bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate; there is no one correct bitrate for every stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the current recommendations.

These are examples from YouTube’s guidance, not universal targets. Run an upload-speed test and choose a quality your connection can sustain reliably. Leave capacity for normal variation and other household traffic rather than treating a speed-test result as proof of stable upload performance.

Set up YouTube before judging the laptop
- Enable live streaming. If this is the first time you have enabled it, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Get the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow provides these details. Keep the stream key private; configure your encoder or relay with the correct server URL and key.
- Match the encoder to YouTube’s guidance. Choose a supported codec and resolution, set CBR, and use a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Select a bitrate appropriate to your codec, resolution and frame rate.
- Check the actual end-to-end path. Confirm that the source reaches NGINX as intended, that NGINX forwards it to YouTube, and that YouTube receives a healthy stream. A service starting locally does not establish that the entire route is working.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving statement, not confirmation that a single uninterrupted live session can run indefinitely. Plan the stream duration and session behavior accordingly.
Test the whole setup for the workload you plan to run
- Use the intended content and settings. Test the real resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and NGINX configuration, not a lighter configuration you do not intend to use.
- Include representative audio and movement. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. A static or silent test may not reveal issues that appear during the actual stream.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health information and messages. Check for warnings or interruptions while the stream is running, and investigate the cause rather than assuming a successful start means the setup is sound.
- Check the conditions that will persist at home. The laptop needs dependable power, cooling, network connectivity and an upload connection capable of sustaining the chosen stream. These are practical factors to verify; the available official guidance does not prescribe a universal laptop power or hardware threshold.
- Observe recovery as well as steady running. If the connection or YouTube ingest drops, confirm what your configuration does next and whether you can restore the stream. Do not treat a short test or one uninterrupted session as a guarantee of continuous service.
What determines whether your particular old laptop is suitable
A device-specific answer requires details that the word “old” does not provide: the laptop model and operating system, whether it only runs NGINX or also encodes, the intended stream settings, its power and cooling condition, and measured upload performance where it will run. Neither the cited NGINX documentation nor YouTube’s encoder guidance sets a universal minimum CPU or RAM specification or certifies a laptop for 24/7 operation.

If the laptop is only relaying a stream, test that relay path under the intended conditions. If it must encode or transcode too, test that complete workload as well. In either case, use YouTube’s stream-health information and treat the result as evidence about your particular setup—not a promise that it will never fail.
