Enable DigitalOcean’s free Monitoring agent, confirm that do-agent is running, then open your Droplet’s Insights tab to track CPU, memory, load average, disk, and bandwidth. Use those graphs to spot server pressure—not to determine by themselves whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and your outbound bandwidth separately.
Enable DigitalOcean Monitoring
DigitalOcean Monitoring is opt-in. New Droplets can have the agent enabled during creation; existing Droplets need the agent installed. DigitalOcean’s official quickstart was last verified on 1 October 2026.
For a new Droplet
- During Droplet creation, select Improved Metrics and monitoring (Free).
- Finish creating the Droplet. The agent adds memory and load-average graphs and enables alerting alongside the default graphs.
For an existing Droplet
- Open the Droplet’s Web Console in the DigitalOcean Control Panel, or connect through another shell with administrator privileges.
- Run DigitalOcean’s installation command:
curl -sSL https://repos.insights.digitalocean.com/install.sh | sudo bash - Check the service:
systemctl status do-agentA successful check shows
Active: active (running). - In the Control Panel, open the Droplet and select Insights to view its graphs.
The agent runs as an unprivileged user, reads system metrics from /proc, and makes outbound connections: port 80 to obtain an authentication token from its metadata service and port 443 to send encrypted metrics. DigitalOcean says it opens no ports and does not interfere with existing services. See the DigitalOcean Monitoring features documentation.
Read the CPU graph and load average together
The CPU graph represents total utilization across the Droplet. DigitalOcean’s CPU alerts track total CPU and do not separate system time from user time. Be careful when comparing that graph with local utilities: some tools display 100% per CPU core, so a multi-vCPU Droplet can exceed 100% in those tools, while DigitalOcean’s aggregate view uses 100% as total capacity.

Load average answers a different question: how many processes are running or waiting for CPU time. It is not normalized to the number of vCPUs. Compare it with the Droplet’s vCPU count. For example, DigitalOcean explains that a load average of two is above capacity on a one-vCPU Droplet but half of the available CPU capacity on a four-vCPU Droplet. A brief spike is less informative than a sustained pattern; the 15-minute average helps show whether pressure is continuing. See DigitalOcean’s metric definitions.
There is no universal CPU percentage or load-average threshold that fits every stream. Judge sustained readings against your Droplet’s vCPU count and normal workload, and investigate when high readings coincide with dropped frames, encoding delays, or other stream problems.

Interpret memory usage without mistaking cache for a problem
Linux uses otherwise unused RAM for disk cache and can reclaim that memory when applications need it. DigitalOcean calculates its memory-used measure from /proc/meminfo by subtracting free and cached memory from total memory. As a result, top or htop may appear to show more memory in use than the Control Panel because local tools can count cache differently.
Look at the sustained trend and available or reclaimable memory rather than treating cache alone as a shortage. Investigate persistent pressure alongside symptoms such as process failures or degraded streaming; a single memory percentage is not a universal trigger.

Use graphs and alerts to catch sustained changes
DigitalOcean’s default Droplet graphs include public bandwidth and disk I/O and disk usage. Installing the agent adds memory and load-average graphs, enhanced graphs, and alerting. You can create alert policies for CPU, load average, and memory, as well as disk and bandwidth. Set thresholds that reflect your workload, then check how they behave during normal stream operation rather than assuming one threshold suits every Droplet. See the DigitalOcean Monitoring graph guidance and quickstart instructions.
The built-in agent reports host-level system metrics. It does not provide application-level performance metrics, and its metrics cannot be exported directly from the do-agent service. If you need application metrics or custom visualizations, DigitalOcean recommends separate APM tooling or an external tool such as Grafana. Its documented limitations are described at DigitalOcean Monitoring limits.

Confirm stream health in YouTube as well
A healthy Droplet CPU or RAM graph does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the event, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the broadcast. Its encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. Recommended ingest bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the setting that matches your stream.
For a concrete reference, YouTube’s English-language encoder table recommends H.264 ingestion at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; its AV1/H.265 recommendations for those resolutions and frame rates are 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps, respectively. These are YouTube-recommended ingestion bitrates, not Droplet CPU or RAM requirements.

YouTube says the outgoing stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Check outbound speed and, where applicable, account for both primary and backup stream bitrates. See YouTube’s live streaming tips. Compare YouTube’s stream-health indicators with DigitalOcean’s CPU, load, memory, and bandwidth trends to narrow down whether a problem is on the server side or in delivery to YouTube.
Troubleshoot common monitoring and streaming issues
- No memory or load-average graph: Monitoring may not be enabled, or the agent may not be running. On an existing Droplet, install the agent and check
systemctl status do-agentforActive: active (running), then revisit Insights. - Local CPU looks over 100%, but the DigitalOcean graph does not: The local tool may report 100% per core, while DigitalOcean’s graph represents aggregate Droplet capacity. Compare like with like and consider the Droplet’s vCPU count.
toporhtopshows more RAM used than Insights: The tools may count Linux cache differently. Check reclaimable memory and the trend instead of assuming cached RAM is unavailable.- Load average is high: Compare it with the number of vCPUs and check whether the 15-minute average stays elevated. Correlate it with CPU utilization and stream symptoms rather than reacting to a short spike alone.
- YouTube reports stream-health trouble while host graphs look normal: Check YouTube’s messages, encoder settings, outbound speed, and bandwidth headroom. Host metrics do not measure YouTube’s receipt of the stream.
- You need application-specific data or a custom dashboard: The built-in agent is limited to system-level metrics and does not directly export its metrics. Add separate APM or external visualization tooling if that coverage is necessary.
Or let it run in the cloud
