To monitor a YouTube live loop on a Contabo Linux VPS, connect over SSH and run top while the loop is active. Check both the system-wide CPU and memory summaries and the row for the process running the loop. For a more visual, interactive view, use htop. Interpret readings against the resources assigned to your particular VPS and the work your video pipeline performs; there is no established CPU or RAM percentage that is universally “too high” for this workload.
Monitor the loop from an SSH session
- Connect to your VPS. Open an SSH session using the server address and login configured for your Contabo VPS. The exact credentials and SSH client depend on your account and operating system.
- Start the live process view. Run
top. Contabo describes it as a real-time process monitor showing system-wide statistics and individual processes. Watch the CPU and memory summaries, then see which processes rise to the top while the loop is running. Contabo’s process-monitoring guide covers its use. - Locate the loop process. Identify the process name associated with your playback or FFmpeg command. Compare its CPU and memory readings with the overall system figures: other server processes may contribute to the total.
- Observe more than one moment. Note readings while the loop is active and, if practical, compare them with an idle or non-loop period. That comparison can help identify a change associated with the workload, but it is not a controlled benchmark.
Do not terminate or reprioritize system services simply to test a theory about resource use. First identify what a process does and whether it is safe to change.
Use htop when you need a more interactive view
htop provides a visual process list. Contabo’s Linux VPS guidance describes per-core CPU bars, memory and swap indicators, and tools for sorting, searching, or viewing process trees.
If it is not already installed, Contabo’s guide lists these commands for the indicated distribution families:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Ubuntu or Debian:
sudo apt install htop - CentOS or RHEL-family systems:
sudo yum install htoporsudo dnf install htop
Check which Linux distribution your VPS runs before choosing a package command. Once htop is available, use its process list to find the loop and inspect it alongside the overall CPU, memory, and swap indicators. The same Contabo guide explains the available process-inspection features: How to Check and Manage Running Processes on a Linux VPS.
Interpret readings in light of what the loop is doing
A “YouTube loop” does not describe one fixed workload. A process that copies already encoded video packets does different work from one that decodes video, applies filters or scaling, and encodes it again.

The FFmpeg documentation defines stream copy as copying an input stream’s packets “without decoding, filtering, or encoding them.” Stream copy avoids those processing steps, but it cannot apply filters, which operate on decoded frames. A pipeline that filters or transcodes therefore has additional media-processing work; its actual CPU demand depends on the command, content, and server. The documentation does not predict the CPU percentage for a particular Contabo VPS. See the FFmpeg documentation.
If CPU usage rises, inspect the actual command before attributing the increase to encoding. Consider whether the pipeline is copying streams or decoding, filtering, scaling, or encoding them. The readings show what is happening on your server; they do not, by themselves, establish that a specific percentage is abnormal.

Compare usage with your VPS allocation
Contabo VPS families and resource allocations differ. Check the CPU and RAM assigned to the specific instance you are using, rather than applying a threshold or expectation from a different plan. Contabo’s VPS product documentation describes its VPS families and resource model.
As one dated example, Contabo’s product documentation listed Cloud VPS 20 with 6 vCPUs, 12 GB RAM, and 100 GB NVMe when that page was last updated in June 2026. This is a plan specification, not a recommendation or a measured result for a YouTube loop; plan details can change. Check the current listing and your own instance allocation before using it as a comparison. Contabo Cloud VPS documentation.

Keep a longer-running view if needed
top and htop are useful for examining a running system in a terminal. If you need resource, bandwidth, or downtime monitoring beyond a live terminal session, Contabo support describes a Monitoring add-on. Confirm its current availability for your server and account before relying on it; the support information does not establish that it is available on every plan. See Contabo’s performance-issues guidance.
Troubleshoot common monitoring questions
htopis not found: It may not be installed. Confirm your distribution, then use the matching Ubuntu/Debian or CentOS/RHEL-family command above.- The loop process looks quiet but total CPU is busy: Other processes may be using CPU. Inspect the full process list rather than relying only on the loop’s row.
- The loop uses more CPU than expected: Check whether the command decodes, filters, scales, or encodes instead of merely copying encoded streams. The exact workload and VPS allocation matter; no universal expected percentage is established.
- Memory or swap indicators concern you: Compare system readings with the RAM assigned to your instance and inspect process rows to see how usage is distributed. The available sources do not establish a universal RAM threshold for this workload.
- You need monitoring when you are not watching the terminal: Check whether Contabo’s Monitoring add-on is currently available for your account and server.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and streams to YouTube.
