You can loop a prerecorded file to YouTube Live from Debian by installing FFmpeg, adding -stream_loop -1 before the input, pacing it with -re, and sending the output to the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. This keeps FFmpeg sending the file repeatedly; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. The Debian host, network, source file, FFmpeg process, and YouTube live event all need to remain healthy.
What you need before starting
- A Debian system with FFmpeg installed and a prerecorded video file available locally.
- A YouTube channel able to start a live stream, with its server URL and stream key available in Live Control Room.
- Sustained upload capacity for the chosen video bitrate, plus headroom for other network traffic.
- A plan to supervise the process and the YouTube event, especially if the stream is meant to run unattended.
This procedure is for a file-based stream, not a live camera or microphone feed. The example below re-encodes video and audio for a broadly compatible H.264/AAC output. It is an illustrative starting point, not a tested command; source media, Debian build, CPU capacity, and YouTube’s displayed endpoint can require changes.
Install FFmpeg on Debian
On a configured Debian system, install the distribution package and check the build:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ffmpeg
ffmpeg -version
Debian’s wiki documents installation with apt-get install ffmpeg. The Debian stable package listing at the time of this article identifies Debian 13 (trixie) as version 7:7.1.5-0+deb13u1; installed versions depend on the Debian release and may change. Check the package listing for your release at Debian Packages.

Create or select the YouTube live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create or select the live stream and copy the server URL and stream key displayed for that stream.
- Check the stream’s start behavior. Depending on its settings and workflow, sending the encoder feed may start it automatically, or a scheduled stream may require you to wait for the preview and click “Go live” in Live Control Room.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes it as similar to a password and address. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, shared command transcript, or logs. If it is exposed, reset it in Studio and update the encoder.
For shell use, do not paste the real key into a command that will remain in shell history. Prefer appropriately permission-restricted configuration or service-environment handling. See YouTube’s guidance on stream settings and managing live streams.
Choose YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the feed in transit. For a straightforward FFmpeg example, H.264 video and AAC audio are a practical compatibility choice.

| Output target | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps recommended |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps recommended |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality for every source or connection. Its guidance also specifies stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, and Rec. 709 for SDR color. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current settings and other resolution/frame-rate combinations.
Use a keyframe interval that matches the output frame rate: for 30 fps, 60 frames is two seconds; for 60 fps, 120 frames is two seconds. In the command below, -g 60 therefore corresponds to two seconds only because the output is 30 fps.

Loop and publish a prerecorded file
Replace the input path with your file and the destination with the exact RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Do not publish a command containing your real key.
ffmpeg -hide_banner -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M
-r 30 -g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_SERVER_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
-stream_loop -1loops the input indefinitely; it belongs before-i.-rereads the file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as the host can process it. Do not add file pacing blindly to a live camera or already-live source.-c:v libx264encodes H.264 video. Encoding consumes CPU;-preset veryfasttrades some compression efficiency for lower encoding effort.-b:vand-maxrateset the target and cap in this example;-bufsizecontrols the rate-control buffer. The example uses 8 Mbps video, within YouTube’s published 720p30 minimum-to-recommendation range. Set bitrate to suit the resolution, frame rate, and sustainable upload capacity.-r 30sets 30 fps,-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, and-pix_fmt yuv420pselects a widely supported pixel format.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes AAC audio at YouTube’s listed stereo bitrate and sample rate. If your file has no audio stream, handle that deliberately rather than assuming FFmpeg can map one.-f flvselects the conventional container for RTMP-family output. Use the server URL displayed in Studio; endpoints and account options can vary.
If the file already has H.264/AAC streams with compatible timestamps and formats, stream-copying with -c copy may reduce CPU use, but it can fail when the streams or timestamps do not suit the destination and FLV muxer. Test the exact media and FFmpeg build before relying on it. A playlist assembled with a concat demuxer or list introduces boundary and timestamp-continuity concerns; test transitions before unattended use. Debian’s FFmpeg documentation describes RTMP publishing with file pacing and FLV output in its FFmpeg documentation.

Calculate bandwidth with headroom
YouTube says the total outgoing bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. For one stream targeting its 14 Mbps H.264 recommendation for 1080p30, that margin implies about 16.8 Mbps of sustained available upload capacity (14 × 1.2). This is arithmetic from YouTube’s figures, not a separately published threshold. Measure from the Debian host and its actual network route; another device’s download speed is not a substitute. Other users and processes sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to FFmpeg. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep a long-running stream operational
A terminal process alone is fragile: a reboot, shell closure, process crash, network disruption, or missing input can stop the feed. For unattended operation, run FFmpeg under a service manager or process supervisor configured to restart after failure, keep access-controlled logs, and alert when the process exits. Monitor the source file and disk, network conditions, and YouTube stream health. A restart policy cannot fix a revoked key, corrupt or missing media, unsupported streams, insufficient bandwidth, or a YouTube-side event that needs operator action.

YouTube’s encoder setup guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a single stream can be relied on indefinitely or that longer streams cannot exist. For a channel intended to stay live around the clock, plan event transitions or restarts and review current YouTube requirements, account settings, and archive behavior before publishing. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live-stream management guidance.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube receives no feed | Wrong server URL or stream key, blocked connection, or a key that has been reset | Copy the current endpoint and key from Studio; confirm the channel’s live event is available and that any required “Go live” action is completed. Keep the key out of shared logs and transcripts. |
| Stream health reports dropped frames or instability | Insufficient or fluctuating upload bandwidth, or competing network traffic | Measure sustained upload from the Debian host, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% margin, and reduce the target bitrate if needed. |
| CPU is saturated or output stutters | Software re-encoding exceeds the host’s capacity | Try a faster x264 preset or test stream-copying only if the file’s codecs and timestamps are compatible. Verify output and stream health rather than assuming a lower-CPU method is valid. |
| FFmpeg exits at startup or at a loop boundary | Missing input, unsupported media, absent audio, or a timestamp/codec issue | Confirm the path and permissions, inspect the source streams, handle missing audio deliberately, and test the full file including loop transitions before leaving it unattended. |
| The FFmpeg process is running but the event is not live | YouTube’s event settings require preview confirmation or operator action | Check Live Control Room for preview, stream health, and the event’s start controls; encoder feed alone does not guarantee every workflow will publish automatically. |
