What New Relic can show in a WordPress performance investigation
WordPress performance problems are rarely explained by one number. A slow page can result from PHP execution, a plugin callback, a theme function, a database query, web-server queuing, or a browser-side asset. New Relic’s full-stack WordPress integration is designed to connect those layers instead of treating page speed and server response as separate subjects.

Prerequisites and access you need
Before installing anything, establish what you control. The agents run on the server hosting WordPress, not inside the WordPress editor alone.

Check the WordPress and PHP environment
New Relic’s compatibility documentation lists WordPress 6.0 and later for WordPress-specific functionality. Confirm the site’s WordPress version, PHP version, operating system, web server, and PHP execution mode. The PHP agent must load into the PHP process that serves the site; installing it for a command-line PHP binary does not necessarily install it for PHP-FPM or the web server’s PHP module.
- Record whether requests are handled by Apache, Nginx with PHP-FPM, or another supported arrangement.
- Identify every PHP runtime that serves the site, including separate pools for the public site, administration, or staging.
- Confirm that you can install a server package or ask the host to do so.
- Keep a maintenance window available because the PHP extension and web-server or PHP-FPM configuration require a restart.
Decide whether you have sufficient hosting access
A virtual or dedicated server with root or administrative access generally permits the guided installer and service restarts. On managed or shared hosting, you may not be able to install a system extension, run the local proxy daemon, edit PHP configuration, or restart PHP-FPM. In that case, ask the provider whether it supports New Relic’s Infrastructure and PHP agents and whether it can assign an application name and license configuration for your site. If the provider cannot load the PHP extension, WordPress-only code changes cannot supply the same transaction and hook visibility.

Prepare an application naming scheme
Choose a name that identifies both the site and environment, such as a production domain name and a separate staging name. Avoid using one application name for unrelated sites; that merges their transactions and makes plugin diagnosis ambiguous. If several PHP pools serve the same production site, configure them consistently so their data arrives in one intended application.
Install the Infrastructure and PHP agents
The Infrastructure agent supplies host and service context, while the PHP agent instruments WordPress requests. New Relic’s PHP agent has two basic components: a PHP extension that collects application data and a local proxy daemon that transmits it to New Relic.
1. Install the Infrastructure agent
- Open the New Relic installation flow for your server operating system and select the guided installer when your hosting permissions allow it.
- Run the installer with the required administrative privileges, or use the documented manual package method if your organization manages packages centrally.
- Confirm that the Infrastructure service starts at boot and that outbound communication to New Relic is permitted by the host firewall or egress policy.
The Infrastructure agent is not a replacement for the PHP agent. It adds host and service telemetry that helps explain PHP behavior, but WordPress transaction, hook, plugin, and theme detail comes from PHP instrumentation.
2. Install the PHP agent
- Use New Relic’s PHP installation instructions for the operating system and PHP version that actually serves WordPress.
- Install the PHP extension and the local proxy daemon as instructed for that environment.
- Apply the license and application settings in the PHP agent configuration. Keep the license value protected as a server secret rather than placing it in a public WordPress file.
- If the host has more than one PHP configuration, update the configuration loaded by the web-serving SAPI, not only the command-line configuration.
After installation, verify that the extension is loaded in the web-serving runtime. A command-line check can report a different PHP configuration from the one used by PHP-FPM, so confirm through the service configuration or the agent’s own startup log as well.

3. Set the application name and restart services
Set a meaningful application name and the required license configuration, then restart the process that loads PHP:
- Restart Apache when PHP is loaded as an Apache module.
- Restart PHP-FPM, and reload or restart Nginx as required, when Nginx proxies requests to PHP-FPM.
- Restart any separate PHP-FPM pools that serve WordPress administration, cron endpoints, or other site paths you intend to measure.
Without a restart, the new extension or configuration may not be present in existing worker processes. A successful package installation alone is not proof that WordPress requests are instrumented.
4. Generate traffic and allow data to arrive
- Open the public site and several representative URLs, including a page that normally feels slow.
- Sign in to the administration area only if you are comfortable including those requests in the selected application data.
- Exercise key actions such as search, checkout, publishing, or an API request when they are relevant to the site.
- Wait several minutes for application telemetry to populate before judging the installation.
New Relic cannot display a useful transaction profile for a site that has received no requests since the restart. Use normal, realistic requests rather than repeatedly refreshing one cached page.
Open the WordPress APM view and establish a baseline
In New Relic, open APM & services and select the WordPress application name you configured. The WordPress integration provides a pre-built dashboard with transactions, visitors, and call duration, along with PHP, Apache, and MySQL data.

Sort or filter transactions by call duration and request path. Look for concentration: a single endpoint that is consistently slow is a different problem from broad latency across every request. Inspect whether the time is spent in application code or in a dependency. A request with high PHP time but little database time points toward WordPress execution, hooks, or plugin logic; a request dominated by MySQL time needs database investigation instead.
- Compare front-end page requests with administrative or asynchronous endpoints.
- Check whether slow calls occur only during traffic spikes or remain slow at low traffic.
- Record the time window, URL pattern, and affected environment before changing code, so later measurements are comparable.
Use visitors as impact context
A slow transaction serving one internal tool may have less user impact than a moderately slow transaction requested by most visitors. The dashboard’s visitor information helps prioritize work, but it does not by itself explain the cause. Pair reach with call duration and dependency timing.

Correlate PHP, Apache, and MySQL telemetry
Full-stack data lets you ask where the request’s elapsed time accumulated. Apache metrics can reveal web-server pressure, PHP data shows application execution, and MySQL telemetry can expose database waits or expensive queries. Correlation is more useful than treating any one layer’s average as a complete page-load measurement.
Find the slow WordPress plugin, theme, hook, or callback
WordPress-specific instrumentation is most useful when a transaction is already known to be slow. Start from the slow request, then drill into its hooks and callbacks rather than disabling plugins at random.
Choose the hook-detail mode
The newrelic.framework.wordpress.hooks.options setting controls how much callback detail is recorded. The three documented choices are:

Use the least detailed mode that answers the diagnostic question. Broad tracing is valuable during discovery, but leaving maximum detail enabled when you only need slow-hook alerts can increase data volume and overhead.
Trace a suspected slow request
- In APM, select the transaction pattern with the highest relevant call duration.
- Open a representative trace or breakdown and identify whether time is concentrated in WordPress hook execution, PHP application code, MySQL, or the web server.
- Review the recorded hook and callback names, execution time, and callback counts.
- Map the callback to the responsible plugin, theme, or custom code in the WordPress installation.
- Reproduce the same request after changing one factor, such as disabling a plugin in staging or adjusting its configuration.
- Compare the new transaction and hook timings over comparable requests before deploying the change.
Callback count matters as well as individual duration. A callback that takes little time once but runs hundreds of times can consume more request time than one visibly slow invocation.
Use a threshold when the list is noisy
Threshold mode is appropriate when a busy site produces too many small callbacks to inspect manually. The documented default is 1 ms; retain it when that granularity is useful, or set a threshold that matches the question you are answering. A higher threshold reduces detail and can hide cumulative work from many short callbacks, so do not use it as a substitute for a broad investigation when the culprit is unknown.

Monitor backend response and browser page performance together
APM transaction time describes work on the server. It does not equal the time a visitor waits for the complete page, because a browser must receive HTML, download assets, execute JavaScript, and render. New Relic’s browser monitoring adds that client-side perspective.
Automatic browser instrumentation
The PHP agent can inject the browser agent automatically. This is usually the simplest option when the generated markup is compatible with injection and your content-security policy permits the required scripts. Confirm that the resulting document contains the browser instrumentation and that cached HTML is not serving an old version after configuration changes.
Manual browser instrumentation
When automatic injection is unsuitable, use the generated browser header in the document’s <head> and place the generated footer immediately before </body>. In a WordPress theme, ensure the header code is emitted on every page intended for monitoring and the footer code runs before the closing body tag. A custom page template that omits the standard hooks can omit one of those locations, so verify the final HTML rather than assuming every template behaves identically.
Interpret the two timing layers
- High backend time and high browser time: begin with the slow transaction, hook, plugin, database, or server dependency.
- Low backend time and high browser time: investigate asset weight, third-party scripts, client-side JavaScript, rendering, or network conditions.
- High backend time and modest browser time for some users: caching, geography, or sampling may be masking the server delay; compare the same request and audience carefully.
Browser data should complement, not replace, APM. A fast first byte can still lead to a slow interactive page, while a slow server response can dominate every front-end optimization.

Follow a fixed order so that WordPress code changes do not obscure an installation problem.
No application transactions appear
- Generate new requests after the restart; old requests cannot populate a newly configured application.
- Wait several minutes for application data to arrive.
- Confirm that the PHP extension is loaded by the web-serving SAPI, not only by CLI PHP.
- Check the configured license value and application name for the exact PHP runtime serving the site.
- Verify that Apache or PHP-FPM was actually restarted and that a second PHP pool is not serving the requests.
- Inspect the agent and service logs for startup, permission, or connection errors.
Application data appears, but browser data does not
Check whether automatic injection is enabled and whether the final HTML contains the browser header and footer. For manual instrumentation, confirm that the header is inside <head> and the footer is immediately before </body>. New Relic’s installation guidance directs readers to browser-monitoring troubleshooting when data is still absent after more than 15 minutes.

- Review the site’s content-security policy for blocked New Relic browser scripts or endpoints.
- Check whether a cache, optimization plugin, proxy, or CDN removes or rewrites injected markup.
- Look for content-length constraints or response transformations that prevent automatic injection.
- Confirm that hosting permissions allow the agent to modify or observe the response path.
Hook detail is missing
Confirm that WordPress-specific functionality is supported by the installed agent and that the hook option is set to a mode that can capture the event. Threshold mode intentionally omits hooks below its threshold. If plugin or theme callbacks are absent in plugin_callbacks, temporarily use all_callbacks for discovery, then return to a narrower setting once the cause is known.
Data is present but appears inconsistent
Check whether requests are split across application names, PHP pools, staging and production, or cached paths that bypass PHP. Compare like-for-like URLs and time windows. Sampling and differing traffic patterns can make a single trace unrepresentative; use repeated requests and the dashboard’s visitor context before concluding that a change fixed the problem.
Installation choices by hosting model

The meaningful comparison is not simply “automatic versus manual.” Evaluate installation access, backend depth, browser visibility, and the detail-versus-overhead setting. A host that permits browser scripts but not the PHP extension cannot provide the same plugin and transaction diagnosis.
Operational practices that keep monitoring useful
- Start with a question: decide whether you are looking for a slow URL, a plugin callback, a database dependency, or a browser bottleneck before selecting maximum instrumentation.
- Separate environments: use distinct names for production and staging so experiments do not contaminate the baseline.
- Change one variable: disable or reconfigure one plugin, theme feature, query, or cache layer at a time when validating a hypothesis.
- Preserve realistic traffic: include anonymous, logged-in, administrative, and asynchronous paths only when they represent the users you need to understand.
- Recheck after upgrades: WordPress, PHP, plugins, themes, web servers, and agent versions can change the execution path or configuration that was previously measured.
- Protect credentials: keep the New Relic license configuration on the server and restrict access to agent logs and configuration files.
Monitoring is most valuable when it shortens the loop between a reported slowdown, a measured transaction, a specific callback or dependency, and a controlled fix. Instrument broadly enough to find the cause, then narrow the detail once the cause is understood.
What this setup cannot establish by itself
New Relic telemetry identifies where monitored requests spend time; it does not prove that a particular code change is safe, that every visitor experiences the same latency, or that a one-time trace represents all traffic. The available documentation does not provide a universal benchmark for WordPress response time. Treat the dashboard as evidence for your site and workload, and validate changes with comparable requests, browser observations, and normal traffic after deployment.
