Zabbix remains the monitoring and decision engine. Its Linux templates collect metrics and evaluate trigger expressions. When a trigger changes state, Zabbix creates an event and invokes the configured media type or alert action.
Alerta is the event aggregation and visualization layer. It receives the event payload, stores it, groups repeated notifications (deduplication), and presents the current state in its console. An integration can add a moreInfo URL that takes an operator back to the originating Zabbix event.

The forwarding path is therefore:
- A Zabbix agent or another collector reports Linux metrics.
- A Zabbix template evaluates triggers for availability, resource pressure or capacity.
- A problem or recovery event invokes a webhook media type or
zabbix-alerta. - The integration sends the event to the Alerta API.
- Alerta authenticates the request, deduplicates the alert and displays it.
Running both services on one VPS is possible, but many installations monitor the VPS from a separate Zabbix server. The network and security steps are the same: the Zabbix process must be able to reach the Alerta API, while the public internet should not be able to write alerts anonymously.
Choose a deployment model
Docker with a database service
The project-maintained container runs alerta-web. A production deployment uses MongoDB or PostgreSQL, sets DATABASE_URL, publishes the API and console port, and normally starts the web and database services together with Docker Compose. Compose makes the service relationship, environment variables and restart policy reproducible on a VPS.

You still need to plan persistent database storage, filesystem ownership and reverse-proxy integration.
Native Python installation
Alerta can also be installed from its Python package. This avoids a container runtime, but you must manage the Python environment, the Alerta server process, the database connection and service startup yourself. It can fit an existing systemd-based VPS, although recreating the same environment on another host is usually more work.
| Decision point | Docker deployment | Native Python deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Repeatability | Compose records the application and database services together. | Depends on your Python environment and host service configuration. |
| Upgrade and rollback | Change the image version and roll back to the previous image when needed. | Manage package versions and process configuration on the host. |
| Database operations | Run MongoDB or PostgreSQL as a managed Compose service or connect to an external database. | Operate the selected database separately from the Python service. |
| Filesystem ownership | Persistent volumes must be writable by the container user. | Host users and service permissions must be configured directly. |
| Reverse proxy | Proxy to the published container port. | Proxy to the native Alerta service port. |
For a new Linux VPS, Docker Compose is generally the easier route to reproduce. A native installation remains valid when you already operate Python services and systemd under a consistent configuration standard.

Prepare the Linux VPS
- Install a supported Docker Engine and Docker Compose implementation if you are using containers, or a supported Python runtime and package tooling for a native installation.
- Provide persistent storage for the Alerta database. Do not rely on a container’s writable layer for alert history.
- Reserve a DNS name for the Alerta console and API if operators will access it remotely.
- Allow the Alerta API port only from the Zabbix server and trusted administration networks at the firewall. Expose the web console through a reverse proxy rather than opening an unrestricted application port.
- Prepare a strong, unique administrator password, a random
SECRET_KEY, and a separate API key for the Zabbix integration. - Confirm that the VPS clock is synchronized. Event ordering, deduplication windows and links are difficult to troubleshoot when host clocks drift.
Keep database credentials, API keys and administrator passwords out of shell history and source control. Store them in the deployment’s secret mechanism or a protected environment file with restrictive permissions.

Deploy Alerta with Docker Compose
The exact image tag and database connection string should come from the Alerta container documentation for the release you select. The deployment sequence is stable even when those values change:
- Create a dedicated directory for the Compose project and a persistent volume or host directory for the database.
- Create the Compose definition with two services:
alerta-weband either MongoDB or PostgreSQL. Configure the web service to depend on the database service and to restart automatically. - Set
DATABASE_URLin the web service to the selected database. Keep the database username, password and host in the URL rather than embedding credentials in scripts. - Set
ADMIN_PASSWORDto a value that is not used anywhere else. If the deployment supportsADMIN_KEY, create a separate administrative key and protect it like a password. - Set a long, random
SECRET_KEY. This key is used by the server for security-sensitive signing; changing it later can invalidate existing sessions or tokens. - Decide whether the console should require login and set
AUTH_REQUIREDaccordingly. A public deployment should require authentication. - Publish the Alerta API and UI port only to the reverse proxy or a restricted management interface. Do not publish the database port to the internet.
- Start the stack with
docker compose up -d, then inspect the web-service and database logs for connection or migration errors. - Open the console through the proxy, create or verify the administrator account, and confirm that the API responds before adding Zabbix.
Alerta’s container configuration also supports plugins. Enable only plugins you need, because every additional integration increases configuration and update work.
Install Alerta natively when containers are not appropriate
- Create a dedicated operating-system user and an isolated Python virtual environment for Alerta.
- Install the command-line package with
pip install alertaand install the Alerta server components required by the release you selected. - Configure the server to use MongoDB or PostgreSQL and run it under your process manager. Give the service account access only to its configuration and log directories.
- Set the same security values used in a container deployment:
ADMIN_PASSWORDor the equivalent server setting, a randomSECRET_KEY, authentication enabled, and a scoped integration key. - Place the service behind an HTTPS reverse proxy and verify that the proxy forwards the API paths and the console’s static assets.
The Alerta CLI is useful after either deployment. Configure its endpoint and API key in .alerta.conf, then use it for an authenticated API smoke test from a trusted administration host.
Confirm Zabbix is producing the right events
Before connecting Alerta, make sure Zabbix is monitoring the intended VPS and that its Linux template is active. The relevant triggers should be enabled for the conditions you care about:

Resolve template, agent or permission problems in Zabbix first. Alerta cannot display an event that Zabbix never creates.
Connect Zabbix with a webhook media type
A webhook keeps the forwarding logic inside Zabbix. It is usually the simplest choice when your Zabbix version supports the required HTTP request and macro handling.
- In the Zabbix administration interface, create or import a webhook media type.
- Set the Alerta API URL as the webhook destination. Use the HTTPS URL exposed by your reverse proxy when TLS is enabled.
- Map the webhook parameters to the supported Zabbix alert macros for subject, message, event ID and trigger information. Include the host identity and the problem or recovery status so Alerta can group and update the event correctly.
- Configure the webhook’s authentication header with the Alerta integration key. Keep the key in the media-type configuration or protected secret facility rather than in a publicly readable script.
- Create a dedicated Zabbix user for this integration. Grant only the host-read permissions needed by the webhook and attach the webhook media to that user’s media settings.
- Reference that user in the alert action. Add conditions that limit forwarding to the intended hosts, severities or operational hours.
- Save the media type and action, then use Zabbix’s built-in test facility if available before generating a real problem.
Recovery notifications must use the same stable event identity as problem notifications. Otherwise Alerta may show a new alert instead of resolving the original one.
Connect through the zabbix-alerta gateway
The gateway is useful when you want a separate forwarding process or a reusable profile outside the webhook editor. Configure the Alerta endpoint and API key in the gateway. For profile-based configuration, set ALERTA_CONF_FILE to the profile path and define the endpoint, key, TLS verification and debug values there.
- Install the gateway on a host that can reach both Zabbix and Alerta.
- Create a profile file readable only by the gateway account.
- Set the Alerta endpoint and integration key in that profile.
- Enable TLS certificate verification for production traffic. Use a temporary debug setting only while diagnosing a controlled failure.
- Configure Zabbix’s action or media path to invoke the gateway for problem and recovery events.
- Run the gateway under a service manager and monitor its logs, restart count and queue behavior.
The gateway adds one more process to maintain, but it can centralize payload mapping and make API-key handling independent of individual Zabbix media types.

Secure the Alerta API and console
Alerta’s authentication documentation warns: “By default, Alerta runs without authentication – any client can read and write alerts.” Treat an unconfigured instance as an internal development service, not a public monitoring endpoint.
- Enable
AUTH_REQUIREDbefore exposing the console or API beyond a trusted private network. - Replace every example administrator password and key. Generate a unique random
SECRET_KEY. - Create a dedicated API key for Zabbix and scope it to the operations and resources the integration needs. Do not reuse the administrator key.
- Send the key in an
Authorization: Key ...orX-API-Keyheader, according to the configured client. - Terminate HTTPS at a correctly configured reverse proxy, or configure SSL directly in the deployment. Keep certificate verification enabled between Zabbix, any gateway and Alerta.
- Configure allowed origins and proxy headers deliberately. Do not use a wildcard origin for an authenticated production console unless you understand the exposure.
- Restrict firewall access, rotate API keys periodically, and remove keys belonging to retired integrations.
Authentication controls who can call the API; it does not replace network filtering, TLS or database protection. The database should remain on a private network and should never be published as a convenience for troubleshooting.

Run a controlled end-to-end test
- Use a non-critical test host or a reversible trigger threshold on the monitored Linux VPS.
- Confirm in Zabbix that the trigger changes to Problem and that the alert action or gateway runs without an error.
- Check the Alerta API or console for the event. Verify host, resource, severity, status and the Zabbix event identifier.
- Open the event’s
moreInfolink and confirm it returns to the corresponding Zabbix event. - Cause the condition to clear. Confirm that Alerta updates the existing alert to a resolved state rather than creating a second alert.
- Send the same event again, if your test method permits it, and verify that repeated notifications are deduplicated.
- Use the Alerta CLI configured through
.alerta.conffor an authenticated API smoke test from a trusted host.
The integration documentation describes this configuration path but does not establish an independent performance or delivery-rate benchmark. Treat your controlled test as an acceptance check for your own network, versions and trigger policy.
Troubleshoot common failures
No alert appears in Alerta
- Check that the Zabbix trigger actually entered the problem state and that the action’s conditions match the event.
- Review the webhook or gateway log for DNS, routing, timeout and HTTP status errors.
- From the Zabbix host, test TCP and HTTPS access to the Alerta endpoint without disabling certificate verification.
- Confirm the API key header name and value, and verify that authentication is enabled on the Alerta side.
The API returns an authentication or authorization error
- Check for an expired, rotated or mistyped key.
- Ensure the key is scoped for event creation and updates, not merely read access.
- Verify that the request is using
Authorization: Key ...orX-API-Keyexactly as configured.
Events arrive but do not resolve or deduplicate
- Compare the event identity in the problem and recovery payloads.
- Ensure the webhook maps the same Zabbix event ID on every notification for that event.
- Check that severity, resource and environment fields are not being changed arbitrarily between updates.
The console works but data disappears after a restart
Inspect the database volume and its ownership. A container’s ephemeral filesystem is not a database backup. Confirm that the Compose volume is mounted at the database’s data directory and schedule backups appropriate to the database engine.
HTTPS requests fail after enabling a proxy
Check the proxy’s upstream port, forwarded host and protocol headers, certificate chain and allowed-origin settings. Test the API path separately from the browser console so that a static-asset problem is not mistaken for an API outage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Alerta replace Zabbix trigger rules?
No. Zabbix supplies the Linux metric collection and trigger evaluation. Alerta receives, groups and displays the resulting events.
Recommended Free Tools
Is it safe to expose a default Alerta installation to the internet?
No. The default server permits unauthenticated reads and writes. Enable authentication, use scoped API keys, enforce HTTPS and restrict network access before public exposure.
Which database can the Docker deployment use?
The documented container deployment supports MongoDB or PostgreSQL. Select one, set its connection in DATABASE_URL, and persist its data outside the container’s writable layer.
How can I verify the API without generating a production outage?
Configure the Alerta CLI endpoint and key in .alerta.conf and run an authenticated smoke test from a trusted host, then perform a reversible Zabbix trigger test to validate the complete event and recovery path.
