To move a Minecraft: Java Edition single-player world to a Linux server, copy the world folder from %APPDATA%.minecraftsaves, place it in the server directory, and make server.properties point to that folder with level-name=. Stop the server before replacing files, keep a complete backup, and use a server version and Java runtime compatible with the world. The server must find level.dat directly inside the selected world folder.

Check the edition, Minecraft version, and Java runtime first
This procedure applies to Minecraft: Java Edition worlds moved from a Windows PC to a Linux dedicated server. The official server setup is compatible only with Java Edition. A Bedrock world uses a different server package and directory layout, so copying it into a Java server will not work.

Use the same Minecraft version on the Linux server as the Windows installation whenever possible. If you must upgrade, use a version with a documented upgrade path and make the backup before opening the world in the newer version. A world can be changed permanently when a newer server saves it, so do not test an upgrade on your only copy.
The Java runtime must also match the server release. For example, Minecraft Java Edition 26.1 requires Java 25. Older tutorials often assume a different Java version, so check the requirements for the exact server JAR you downloaded before starting it.

- Confirm that the Windows world is Java Edition, not Bedrock.
- Record the exact Minecraft version used to last save the world.
- Install the Java runtime required by the Linux server version.
- Plan to test the copied world before deleting or changing the original.
Back up the world and stop anything that can write to it
Exit Minecraft on Windows before copying. If a server is already running on Linux, stop it cleanly and wait for its console to finish saving. Copy the entire world folder, not just selected region files. Preserve the original Windows folder and, ideally, a compressed ZIP stored somewhere separate from the Linux server.
A complete backup includes the files that hold terrain, player data, dimensions, advancements, gamerules, and the world metadata. The critical indicator is level.dat; it must be present in the world folder’s top level. A backup made while the game or server is still writing can be incomplete, so always close the game and stop the server first.

- Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
%APPDATA%.minecraftsavesand press Enter. - Each subfolder is a separate Java Edition single-player world. Use the folder’s date, contents, or the in-game world name to identify the correct one.
- Open the candidate folder and confirm that
level.datis directly inside it. The folder may also contain directories such as region data, player data, advancements, and dimension data. - Close Minecraft if it is open, then copy this complete folder to your backup location.
The name of this folder matters. You can keep it unchanged and set the Linux server’s level-name to that exact name, including capitalization, or rename the folder to match the value already configured on the server.
Choose how to transfer the folder
Minecraft does not require a particular physical device or transfer service. The practical choice depends on whether the Linux host is local, remote, or managed through a control panel.

Compressing the world folder into a ZIP is optional, but it reduces the number of files that must be transferred and preserves a convenient backup. Do not put the ZIP itself in the location selected by level-name; extract the folder there first.
Prepare the Linux server directory
Create or choose a dedicated directory for the server, such as /srv/minecraft, and make sure the Linux account that runs Minecraft can read and write it. Download the server JAR for the same Minecraft version as the world and install the compatible Java runtime.
- Open a terminal on the Linux host and change to the dedicated directory, for example
cd /srv/minecraft. - Run the server JAR once with the matching Java executable, such as
java -jar minecraft-server.jar nogui. Use the actual JAR filename you downloaded. - Allow the first run to create the server files, then stop the process. A first run may stop because the license file has not yet been accepted.
- Open
eula.txt, review the license, and changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you accept it. Do not alter this setting merely to bypass the prompt. - Review the generated
server.properties. It contains thelevel-namesetting that determines which world directory the server loads.
Run the first initialization before installing the transferred world. This creates the expected directory and configuration structure, but it may also create a temporary default world. You can replace that generated world after the server is stopped.
Install the Windows world on Linux
- Stop the Linux server completely. Do not copy files into a world that is still running.
- Transfer the Windows world folder, or transfer its ZIP and extract it in the dedicated server directory.
- Check the resulting path. If the folder is named
My Survival World, the expected file is/srv/minecraft/My Survival World/level.dat, not/srv/minecraft/My Survival World/My Survival World/level.dat. - Open
server.propertiesand setlevel-name=My Survival World, replacing that example with the folder’s exact name. Preserve spaces and capitalization; do not add quotation marks. - If you prefer the existing
level-namevalue, rename the transferred folder to that value instead. Only one of these approaches is necessary. - Move or rename the newly generated default world if its folder would conflict with the transferred folder. Keep it outside the active server directory if you want it as a separate test copy.
- Confirm that the Linux server account owns or can write the transferred files. A world that is readable but not writable may load and then fail to save.
The server directory should contain the JAR, server.properties, eula.txt, and the selected world folder at the same level. The world folder itself must contain level.dat directly. Incorrect nesting is the most common reason a server silently creates a new world.

Start the server and verify the migration
Start the server with the same Java runtime used during initialization, for example java -jar minecraft-server.jar nogui. Watch the console while it loads. The startup messages should identify the configured world and complete without a new-world generation sequence for an unexpected name.
Join from a local Minecraft Java Edition client running the compatible version before opening the server to other players. Test the parts of the save that reveal a partial or incorrect transfer:

- Your player inventory, experience, health, position, and ender chest.
- Advancements, statistics, and gamerules.
- The Nether and the End, including structures and recently visited locations.
- Chests, farms, redstone machines, villagers, pets, and maps.
- Any server-specific settings that should be applied after the world is confirmed.
Keep the Windows copy and the transferred ZIP until you have joined successfully, inspected the important locations, and confirmed that the Linux server can save and reload the world. Stop the server once more, start it again, and verify that changes made during the test persist.
If the server generates a new world
The folder name does not match level-name
Open server.properties and compare level-name= character by character with the transferred directory name. A missing space, changed capital letter, or trailing character can make the server look for a different folder. Alternatively, rename the world folder to the exact configured value, then restart the stopped server.

The world is nested one directory too deep
Inspect the path from the server directory. The correct pattern is server-directory/world-folder/level.dat. If extraction produced server-directory/world-folder/world-folder/level.dat, move the inner folder up one level or extract the ZIP again so that level.dat is immediately inside the folder named by level-name.

The wrong edition or server package is being used
A Java server cannot load a Bedrock world. Verify that the Windows save came from Java Edition and that the Linux host is running the Java server JAR rather than Bedrock Dedicated Server. Bedrock saves use a different location and format.
The server version or Java runtime is incompatible
Compare the Minecraft version that last saved the world with the server JAR version. Install the Java runtime required by that release; Java Edition 26.1, for example, requires Java 25. If the world was opened by a newer release already, do not attempt to force it into an older server. Restore the backup and use a compatible upgrade path instead.
The server cannot save changes
Check Linux ownership and permissions for the entire world folder, including its subdirectories. The account running the server needs write access. Stop the process before correcting permissions, then restart and make a small in-game change to confirm that it survives a server restart.

Java 26.1 changes the world-folder layout
Java Edition 26.1 requires Java 25 and changes where Overworld data is stored. In that release, Overworld data moved from the world root to dimensions/minecraft/overworld. Tutorials that show every dimension directory at the world root may therefore be outdated for 26.1 and later.
Do not manually rearrange dimension files to match an older diagram. Let the matching server version interpret the save, and retain a complete backup before the first launch. When checking a migrated 26.1 world, focus on whether the server loads the world, preserves terrain and player data, and saves correctly rather than on whether its directories look like an older tutorial.
Java and Bedrock are separate migration paths
Bedrock Dedicated Server uses a different package and stores worlds under a worlds/ directory. Its server.properties also uses level-name to select the world folder, but the folder must be placed under the Bedrock server’s expected worlds/ location. The Java Windows path %APPDATA%.minecraftsaves does not apply to Bedrock.
If your source is Bedrock, stop this procedure and obtain instructions for the Bedrock Dedicated Server format. Do not mix a Bedrock world with a Java server directory or assume that changing the folder name will convert it.
After the first successful launch
- Keep at least one offline or otherwise separate copy of the original Windows world.
- Set a routine for stopping the server cleanly before making backups.
- Archive dated copies before Minecraft version upgrades, mods, or major configuration changes.
- Document the server’s Minecraft version, Java version, world-folder name, and Linux directory so a future restore does not depend on memory.
- Use the server console or your management panel for normal stops rather than terminating the Java process abruptly.
A Linux VPS or managed Minecraft service can provide the host, storage, and control panel, but the migration logic remains the same: stop the process, transfer the complete Java world folder, point level-name at it, and verify the save before discarding the original.

Quick migration checklist
- Confirm Java Edition and record the source Minecraft version.
- Install the matching server JAR and required Java runtime on Linux.
- Exit Minecraft and stop any server that may be writing to the save.
- Back up the complete Windows world folder.
- Find it under
%APPDATA%.minecraftsavesand verify top-levellevel.dat. - Transfer the folder or a ZIP to the Linux server.
- Stop the initialized Linux server before replacing its world.
- Place the folder beside the server JAR, with no extra nesting.
- Set
server.propertieslevel-nameto the exact folder name. - Start the server and test terrain, player data, dimensions, advancements, and gamerules.
- Restart once to confirm that changes save, then retain the original backup.
