To move a RedM server safely, freeze writes on the old machine, make and verify a complete backup, provision a compatible FXServer/txAdmin destination, copy the server files and txAdmin state, export and import the MySQL or MariaDB database, then test a real persistent character before changing the player endpoint. Keep the original host untouched until the new server has passed those tests and a fresh rollback backup exists.

What a RedM migration actually includes

A RedM installation is more than the folder that launches the game server. A lossless move has to preserve four connected layers:

  • Runtime: the FXServer/RedM artifact and an operating-system environment that can run it.
  • Configuration: server.cfg, included configuration files, endpoint declarations, resource ensure order, license settings, OneSync or framework options, and provider-specific environment variables.
  • Resources: every script, map, MLO, framework resource, asset and dependency in the server-data/resources tree.
  • State: the MySQL or MariaDB schema and rows for characters, inventories, money, jobs, permissions and other framework tables, plus txAdmin’s own state in txData.

External services are part of the move too. Webhooks, Discord status, voice services, object storage, scheduled backups, DNS records and firewall rules can all break even when the game files are copied correctly.

The official txAdmin documentation explicitly advises backing up both the server folder and txData before making changes (txAdmin server recipes). txAdmin is already included with FXServer; it is not installed as a separate resource (txAdmin getting started).

Plan the move before touching the old host

Build an inventory

Record these details while the old server is still working:

  • FXServer/RedM artifact or build and operating system.
  • Startup command, service definition and the exact server-data path.
  • Resources directory, framework and dependency order.
  • Database engine, database name, host, port, username and the location of its backups.
  • Game endpoint TCP and UDP ports, panel URL and any additional service ports.
  • Scheduled restarts, save jobs, cron or Task Scheduler entries and backup jobs.
  • Webhooks, voice integration, object storage, DNS, firewall rules and other external connections.
  • The Cfx license key and database password, stored privately rather than in a shared migration document.

Take a directory listing or screenshot of the old deployment so you can compare it with the restored one. Do not assume a framework’s standard folder layout: custom resources and included configuration files are common sources of missing data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a maintenance window

Schedule a period when players can be disconnected. A cold backup is safest because no character, inventory or money writes can occur while files and SQL are being captured. If a full stop is impossible, put the server in maintenance and disable logins and any scripts that write persistent data; a backup made while writes continue can be internally inconsistent.

Create a verified cold backup

  1. Stop FXServer cleanly. Use txAdmin or the host’s service manager, then confirm the process is gone. If players can still connect, the database may still be changing.
  2. Archive the complete server-data tree. Include every resource, map, asset, framework file and nested dependency. Preserve names, capitalization, permissions where the destination supports them, and the relative directory layout.
  3. Copy configuration files. Save server.cfg and every file it includes, including files referenced by relative or absolute paths.
  4. Back up txAdmin. Preserve the entire txData directory if you want the existing txAdmin account, configuration, database and logs. The txAdmin installation guidance repeats the requirement to back up that folder before changes (installation documentation).
  5. Export the database separately. Produce a consistent MySQL or MariaDB dump containing the framework and player tables. Keep the SQL dump separate from the file archive so either can be restored independently.
  6. Verify the copies. Record archive and dump sizes, calculate a checksum with the operating system’s file utility, and test that the archive can be opened and the SQL file can be read. A backup that was never tested is only an assumption.
  7. Store an offline copy. An external hard drive for server backup gives you a rollback copy outside both hosting accounts. Protect it from unauthorized access because it contains credentials and player data.

Keep the old server stopped, or keep it isolated from players, until the destination is ready. If you must bring it back online while preparing the new host, make another cold backup immediately before cutover so the final SQL export includes the latest writes.

Provision a compatible destination

Install a supported FXServer artifact on Windows or Linux, then launch txAdmin. The setup flow can connect to an existing server or deploy from a RedM recipe. If you use a new recipe deployment, use an empty deployment directory; recipe tasks can write files and execute database queries, and the txAdmin documentation warns you to inspect any database-cleanup option before running it against an existing database (server recipes; recipe reference).

Confirm where the destination stores txAdmin data. The environment reference supports TXHOST_DATA_PATH for setting that location and TXHOST_GAME_NAME=redm for restricting setup to RedM (txAdmin environment configuration). Record the resulting path before copying txData; placing it in the wrong directory can make txAdmin appear to have lost its accounts and settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check destination prerequisites

  • Enough CPU, memory, disk I/O and storage for the resource tree, logs, database and backups.
  • A stable public address and the TCP and UDP ports required by the server.
  • Firewall rules that allow the game endpoints and txAdmin panel only where needed.
  • FXServer artifact compatibility with the resources and framework you are running.
  • RedM support in the host’s operating system and control panel.
  • A MySQL or MariaDB service, either local or managed, with permission to create the destination database and import the dump.
  • Access to txAdmin, service logs and a rollback method.

The RedM installation guidance also covers the basic server setup path (RedM Server Documentation installation guide). Use the destination provider’s current instructions for its operating system, service manager and firewall rather than copying assumptions from the old host.

Copy the server files without changing the layout

  1. Stop the newly provisioned destination before replacing its generated files.
  2. Copy the archived server-data tree into the destination deployment directory. Do not rename resources or flatten nested folders.
  3. Restore server.cfg and all included configuration files.
  4. If retaining panel history and accounts, restore the backed-up txData to the exact path configured for the destination. If you are deliberately creating a new panel, keep the old txData archive for rollback instead of overwriting the new panel state.
  5. Review file ownership and permissions. The account that runs FXServer must be able to read resources and write logs, cache and any resource-specific data directories.

Copying only the visible scripts is a common failure. Maps, streamed assets, framework dependencies, cache-related configuration and files outside the obvious resources folder can all be required at startup. Compare the destination listing with the inventory made before shutdown.

Restore the MySQL or MariaDB database

  1. Create an empty destination database. Use the intended database name, character set and collation for the framework. Do not import into a database containing unrelated tables.
  2. Create or authorize the database account. Grant the privileges required by the framework and verify that the account can connect from the FXServer machine.
  3. Import the verified dump. Use the destination provider’s SQL import tool or the MySQL/MariaDB client appropriate to its environment. Wait for the import to finish and inspect the output for errors rather than treating a completed upload as success.
  4. Check the important tables. Confirm that character identifiers, inventories, money balances, jobs, permissions and framework-specific tables exist and contain rows. Compare representative row counts with the old database where practical.
  5. Update the connection setting. Change the connection string or protected environment secret in the restored configuration to the destination host, port, database name, username and password.
  6. Test writes. After FXServer starts, create a controlled change such as moving an item or changing a small cash balance, stop cleanly, restart and verify that the change persists.

Do not place the database password or Cfx license key in a public repository, support ticket or shared spreadsheet. Keep secrets in protected server files or provider settings, as recommended in txAdmin’s configuration guidance (server configuration).

Why the database and files must move together

The files define the code and schema expectations; the database contains the player state. A resource version that does not match the imported schema can produce missing-column errors, reset characters or fail during login. Take the final SQL dump from the same maintenance window as the file archive whenever possible.

Adjust configuration for the new host

Open the restored configuration and change only values that describe the destination:

  • Absolute paths to the deployment directory, resources and any data folders.
  • TCP and UDP endpoint declarations and any additional ports used by integrations.
  • The Cfx license key assigned to the destination, if the key or registration is host-specific.
  • Database connection string, credentials and protected environment variables.
  • OneSync, framework and resource settings that depend on the artifact or host.
  • Public hostname, webhook URLs, voice endpoints, object-storage paths and callback addresses.
  • Scheduled backup and restart paths, time zones and service-manager commands.

Preserve the existing ensure order unless a dependency must be changed. Starting resources in a different order can create errors that look like missing data even when every file was copied. The server-configuration documentation explains the relevant configuration structure (txAdmin server configuration).

Start through txAdmin and validate persistence

Start FXServer from txAdmin, not from an untracked shell command, so the deployment, logs and restart behavior are visible in one place. Read the console from the first error; later failures are often consequences of the first missing path, port or dependency.

Run this validation sequence

  1. Panel access: log in to txAdmin and confirm the expected account and deployment are shown.
  2. Endpoints: verify that both game endpoints bind to the intended TCP and UDP ports and that the firewall exposes them.
  3. Database connection: confirm the framework connects without authentication, timeout or migration errors.
  4. Resource order: check that core, framework and dependent resources start successfully.
  5. Account login: connect with a real test account and complete the normal login flow.
  6. Character selection: verify that existing characters appear with the expected names and identifiers.
  7. Persistent state: inspect inventory, money, job and permissions; make a controlled change, reconnect and confirm it remains.
  8. Framework saves: allow the normal save cycle to run, then stop and restart the server and check the same character again.
  9. Operations: test scheduled jobs, webhooks, Discord status, voice integration, object storage and automated backups.
  10. Logs: review FXServer, resource, database and txAdmin logs for repeated warnings, permission failures or connection retries.

Perform the test with the old server unavailable to the test account. Otherwise a DNS or endpoint mistake can send the player back to the old database and give a false impression that migration succeeded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cut over players and preserve a rollback path

  1. Leave the old host intact and retain the original archive and SQL dump.
  2. Take one final cold backup of the destination after validation.
  3. Stop the old server or keep it in maintenance so it cannot accept new writes.
  4. Change the DNS record or player connection endpoint to the destination address. Account for DNS caching and communicate the exact maintenance window.
  5. Connect with a test account through the public endpoint, then watch logs and database writes as real players return.
  6. Keep the old host and its credentials available until the new server has remained stable for a deliberate observation period. If a critical failure occurs, point players back to the old endpoint, restore the last known-good database state if required, and investigate without overwriting the rollback copy.

Do not run both servers against the same live database. Two active instances can write conflicting character state and make a clean rollback impossible.

Choosing the new host for a RedM migration

Evaluate a destination against the operational requirements below rather than choosing solely by advertised player slots.

Decision area Questions to answer Why it affects migration
Control Do you receive full VPS/root access or only managed-panel controls? Root access makes file permissions, services, firewall rules and rollback easier to control; a managed panel may reduce maintenance but limit recovery options.
Compatibility Does it support Windows or Linux as required, the chosen FXServer artifact, RedM recipes and your resource dependencies? An otherwise capable machine can still fail if the operating system, artifact or panel cannot run a required resource.
Data services Is MySQL/MariaDB local or managed? How often are backups made, and are restores tested? The database is the authoritative player state; backup frequency and a tested restore path determine how much progress a failure could cost.
Networking Are the necessary TCP and UDP ports allocated? Can you control the firewall, DDoS protection and public address? Players need reachable, stable endpoints and integrations must be able to call back to the server.
Operations Do you have txAdmin access, useful log retention, scheduled restarts, responsive support and a rollback method? Migration problems are diagnosed through logs and recovered through controlled restarts and backups.
Capacity and cost What CPU, memory, disk I/O, bandwidth, player-slot and backup-storage limits apply? Resource-heavy maps and scripts may run correctly in a test but fail under a full player load if storage or compute is constrained.

Ask any prospective managed host to confirm RedM support, migration assistance, backup policy, port allocation and restore procedures in writing before you commit. If you separate game files from database hosting, verify engine compatibility, region, pricing and the exact restore workflow for that database service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common migration failures and fixes

txAdmin opens as a new, empty panel

The destination is using a different txAdmin data path. Check TXHOST_DATA_PATH, stop the panel, place the backed-up txData at that exact location and restart. If you intentionally created a new panel, retain the old directory as an archive rather than deleting it.

Resources fail with “file not found” or dependency errors

Compare the resource tree and ensure order with the old inventory. Correct absolute paths, restore omitted nested dependencies and check file ownership. Do not rename a resource to make a configuration line look cleaner; update references only when you are deliberately changing the resource.

Players can connect but characters are missing

Check the database name, host, port and credentials in the connection string, then confirm the imported character tables contain rows. A successful server boot does not prove that the framework is using the intended database.

Inventory or money resets after restart

Inspect database permissions and framework save errors. Make a controlled change, wait for the normal save, restart and read the first database error. If the destination account can read but not write, grant the required privileges before allowing players back.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server works locally but not publicly

Verify both TCP and UDP endpoint declarations, provider firewall rules, operating-system firewall rules and the public address in DNS. Test from a network outside the host rather than relying on a local connection.

Recipe deployment threatens existing data

Use an empty deployment directory for a new recipe and read every task before applying it. Recipe tasks can execute database queries, so never approve a cleanup step against the imported database until you understand exactly which tables or rows it changes.

Integrations stop working after the move

Update hostnames, callback URLs, webhook secrets, voice endpoints, object-storage credentials, scheduled-job paths and firewall allowlists. These dependencies are outside the game-resource copy and must be tested individually.

Final migration checklist

  • Old server inventory recorded, including artifact, paths, ports, framework and external services.
  • Cold archive contains server-data, resources, configuration and included files.
  • Complete txAdmin txData backup stored separately.
  • Consistent MySQL/MariaDB dump created, readable and checksum-recorded.
  • Destination FXServer and txAdmin installed on a compatible Windows or Linux setup.
  • Destination ports, firewall, public address and database service confirmed.
  • Files restored without changing resource names or layout.
  • Database imported into the intended database and connection credentials updated securely.
  • Existing character, inventory, money, job and permission data verified.
  • Real login, save, restart, webhook, voice and scheduled-job tests passed.
  • Fresh destination backup made before DNS or endpoint cutover.
  • Old host and rollback archives retained until the new server is proven stable.
