The safe way to move a WordPress site from WP Engine is to copy both the database and the wp-content directory to the new server, test the copy before changing DNS, synchronize any last-minute content, and then switch DNS, URLs, and SSL in a controlled cutover. Keep the WP Engine site and an untouched backup available until the new host has passed production checks.

What a complete WP Engine migration includes
A WordPress XML export is not a full-site migration. It can move selected content, but it does not reproduce the complete operating site. A proper transfer includes the database, WordPress files, and the assets and configuration that make the site behave as it does now.

- Database: Posts, pages, comments, users, settings, plugin data, orders, memberships, and other records are stored in SQL tables.
wp-content: Themes, plugins, uploads, and many site-specific assets live here. It is often the largest part of the file transfer.- Core files and configuration: Copy the WordPress files required by the destination and create a destination-specific
wp-config.php. - Operational settings: DNS records, redirects, cron jobs, email services, analytics, payment integrations, and third-party callbacks must be recreated or verified.
Your domain registrar does not have to change. In most moves, you leave the registration where it is and change the DNS records that direct the domain to the new host.
Decide how to transfer the site
WP Engine documents both an automated migration-plugin route and a manual route. The right choice depends on access, complexity, and how much control you need over the transfer.

For a busy store, membership site, multisite installation, or site with frequent submissions, treat the move as a synchronization project rather than a one-time copy. The first transfer creates the destination; a final sync captures changes made while you tested it.
Pre-migration inventory and safety plan
Do this inventory while WP Engine remains live. Save the results with your backup so you can rebuild or roll back without guessing.
- List every production domain, subdomain, staging domain, and parked domain.
- Record current DNS records, including A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, verification, and service-specific records.
- Note the PHP version, WordPress version, database version, active theme, must-use plugins, regular plugins, and any license keys or environment variables.
- Document redirects, rewrite rules, scheduled tasks, external cron jobs, webhooks, payment callbacks, and API integrations.
- Identify forms, transactional email, ecommerce checkout, memberships, user registrations, search, analytics, backups, and security monitoring that must be tested after the move.
- Measure the approximate size of the database and
wp-content, and confirm that the new host has enough storage, database capacity, and transfer time. - Choose a content-freeze window. Tell editors, support staff, and store operators when new posts, orders, registrations, and form submissions may be paused or recorded for later reconciliation.
Lower the DNS record time-to-live before the cutover if your DNS provider permits it. This can make resolver changes occur sooner, but it cannot guarantee instant propagation: recursive resolvers may retain records until their existing cache expires.
Step-by-step migration procedure
1. Create and verify backups on WP Engine
Create a complete backup before copying anything. Keep the original database export and a separate copy of the files; do not overwrite your only backup with a later test export. If WP Engine provides a downloadable backup, download it and confirm that the archive opens and contains the expected database and wp-content data.
For a manual database export, use the database tool supplied by your environment or an equivalent SQL export. A command-line example is:
mysqldump -u DB_USER -p DB_NAME > site.sql
Replace the database values with the credentials for your site. Store the SQL file securely because it contains user records, settings, and potentially personal or order data.

2. Export the database
The database is the authoritative record of content and application state. Export all WordPress tables that belong to the site, including tables created by plugins. Do not export only posts or pages when moving a working installation: users, options, session data, orders, form entries, and plugin settings may be in other tables.

Retain the table-prefix information and the character set/collation shown by the export tool. If the export is large, use a method that can complete without a browser timeout, such as a host control-panel export or command-line process.
3. Copy wp-content and required files
Download wp-content, including uploads, the active and inactive themes, plugins, and any custom directories used by the site. SFTP or SSH is suitable for large transfers; a browser file manager may time out or omit hidden files.
Also preserve any site-specific root files that are part of the current setup, such as a custom .htaccess, web-server rules, verification files, or a deployment configuration. Do not blindly carry over host-specific rules: review them for WP Engine paths, caching directives, PHP handlers, and absolute filesystem locations.

Set up the new host with a fresh database and a domain or temporary hostname. Confirm the PHP version and database engine are compatible with your WordPress core, theme, and plugins. Create a database user with permission to create and alter the WordPress tables, then record the database name, username, password, host, and port.
Upload a clean copy of the WordPress core files or use the destination host’s installer. Upload your backed-up wp-content over the destination directory, preserving file names and directory structure. Import the SQL file into the empty destination database before opening the site.
5. Adjust wp-config.php
Edit the destination configuration so it points to the new database. At minimum, verify DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD, and DB_HOST. Preserve the existing authentication salts if possible; changing them logs users out, which may be acceptable during a planned cutover but should not be an accidental side effect.
Review any constants for cache systems, object-cache drop-ins, debugging, file paths, or environment-specific URLs. Remove WP Engine-specific settings that the new host does not support, and add the destination’s required settings only after confirming their documented behavior.

6. Update URLs only when necessary
If the domain stays the same, do not run a global replacement merely because the host changed. Hosting paths and temporary URLs may appear in the database, however, so inspect the imported site for them.
If the domain changes, update the WordPress Address and Site Address values and replace the old domain in content, metadata, options, and plugin tables. Use a serialized-data-aware tool; blind SQL replacement can corrupt serialized PHP arrays and break plugins or widgets.
WP-CLI is one option when it is available:
wp search-replace 'https://old.example' 'https://new.example' --all-tables-with-prefix --skip-columns=guid
Run a dry run first, review the table and row counts, and create a fresh backup before applying changes. Search theme templates and custom code separately because hard-coded URLs can remain outside the database. Treat attachment URLs, canonical tags, Open Graph metadata, JavaScript configuration, and API callback URLs as separate checks.

7. Test the copy before changing DNS
WP Engine notes that you can test the destination without changing public DNS by editing your computer’s hosts file. Map the production domain to the new server’s IP address on your test computer, then browse the site using the normal domain. Remove the entry when testing is complete.
Test as an anonymous visitor and as an administrator. Work through this checklist:
- Home page, key landing pages, posts, categories, search, pagination, and 404 handling.
- Admin login, media uploads, editor saves, user roles, password resets, and logout.
- Images, downloadable files, responsive layouts, JavaScript interactions, and cached pages.
- Forms, confirmation messages, notifications, and delivery to real recipient addresses.
- Ecommerce product pages, cart, checkout, taxes, shipping, payment callbacks, order creation, refunds, and customer accounts.
- Redirects from old URLs, canonical URLs, robots directives, XML sitemaps, analytics, and search-console verification.
- Scheduled posts, recurring jobs, queue workers, external cron calls, webhooks, and third-party API connections.
- Error logs, PHP warnings, database errors, slow queries, missing files, mixed-content warnings, and cache behavior.
Do not use a production payment card or send test messages to real customers without a plan. Use sandbox payment credentials and controlled email recipients where those systems support them.

8. Perform a final synchronization
Testing can take hours or days, during which the live WP Engine site may receive new posts, comments, orders, registrations, or form entries. WP Engine specifically warns that these changes may require a second migration immediately before DNS is pointed to the destination.

- Short content freeze: Pause publishing, registrations, checkout, and submissions; export the database again; copy changed media; import the final database; then verify the destination.
- Change reconciliation: If a freeze is impossible, identify every record created after the first export and migrate or re-enter it. This is harder for orders, memberships, comments, and uploaded files, so obtain application-specific guidance before attempting it.
Do not let both sites accept writes after cutover begins. That creates split-brain data that may be impossible to merge cleanly.
9. Add the domain and configure SSL on the new host
Add the production domain to the destination account before changing DNS. Configure the site’s primary domain and any required subdomains. Issue or install an SSL certificate for every hostname that will serve HTTPS. Verify that HTTP redirects to HTTPS only once HTTPS works correctly, and update WordPress URL settings to the final scheme.
Check mixed content after the certificate is active. Images, scripts, stylesheets, fonts, and API endpoints that still use http:// can trigger browser warnings or fail to load.
10. Change DNS and complete the cutover
Point the web records to the new host’s supplied CNAME or IP address. Leave unrelated email records unchanged unless email is also being migrated. If you use a proxy, CDN, or DNS firewall, update the origin there as well as at the authoritative DNS provider.
Use the old and new environments deliberately during propagation: some visitors will continue reaching WP Engine while others reach the destination. Keep the old site online and avoid making content changes there after the final synchronization.
11. Monitor production behavior
As DNS changes spread, monitor both hosts and compare requests, errors, and application data. Watch uptime, server logs, PHP errors, database errors, form deliveries, orders, scheduled tasks, analytics, and search-console coverage. Confirm that certificates renew correctly and that redirects do not loop.

Retain the old backup, the final SQL export, the file archive, the inventory, and the rollback instructions. Do not cancel WP Engine immediately after the first successful page load.
12. Close the old environment only after verification
When DNS has fully converged for your audience and the destination has operated normally through a representative business cycle, take one final backup. Then remove the old environment according to your retention, privacy, and contract requirements. Preserve records needed for audits, customer support, tax reporting, or restoration.

WooCommerce and other transaction-heavy sites
Orders, customer accounts, inventory, subscriptions, and payment webhooks can change while you test. Schedule a freeze during the final export, put checkout into maintenance mode if appropriate, and compare order numbers and inventory before reopening sales. Confirm that payment providers recognize the new callback URLs and that scheduled subscription jobs run only once.
Membership, community, and form sites
Users, password-reset links, uploaded avatars, comments, private content, and form entries are database records or files that a simple content export can miss. Test registration, login, role restrictions, email confirmation, and every important form on the destination.
Multisite installations
Multisite uses network tables, domain mappings, and additional URL relationships. Inventory every mapped domain and network plugin, preserve the complete table set, and verify each site in the network before DNS changes. A migration procedure designed for a single site may not account for network-specific settings.
Large media libraries
Transfer media separately if necessary, but do not declare success until image URLs, thumbnails, protected downloads, and background-processing jobs work. Compare file counts and spot-check older uploads as well as recent ones.
Email and DNS dependencies
Moving web hosting does not automatically move mail. Keep MX, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records correct for the existing mail provider unless you are intentionally changing it. Send controlled messages from forms and WordPress notifications, and inspect both delivery and spam-folder placement.

When to use a migration service
Use a managed WordPress migration service when you lack database or SFTP access, the site has a complicated integration map, or downtime and data loss would be costly. Before authorizing work, obtain written answers to these questions:
- Will the service migrate the database, all of
wp-content, cron jobs, redirects, SSL, and DNS, or only selected files? - How are WooCommerce orders, memberships, comments, and form entries synchronized during the move?
- Who performs URL replacement, and how is serialized data protected?
- What testing is included, what is excluded, and how long is post-cutover support available?
- What is the rollback plan if the destination fails after DNS changes?
Final cutover checklist
- Complete backup downloaded and opened successfully.
- Database export imported and verified.
wp-content, custom files, and required plugins/themes copied.- Destination database credentials and configuration tested.
- URLs replaced only where required, using serialized-data-safe tooling.
- Hosts-file test passed for pages, login, media, forms, commerce, redirects, cron, and integrations.
- Final content synchronization completed, or a documented reconciliation performed.
- Domain added to the new host and SSL issued for every required hostname.
- DNS records changed without disturbing unrelated email records.
- Monitoring, backups, logs, and rollback instructions active.
- WP Engine retained until DNS propagation and production checks are complete.
The migration is finished only when the destination—not merely the homepage—handles the site’s real content, users, transactions, scheduled work, email, and integrations. A deliberate final synchronization and a retained rollback path are what turn a file copy into a reliable host change.
