Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSteam can move an installed game from one drive to another without downloading it again. In Steam, add a library folder on the destination drive, then open Settings → Storage, select the drive that currently holds the game, choose the game, and click Move. Steam transfers the existing files instead of uninstalling and reinstalling the game.
What the move does—and what it does not do
A Steam game lives inside a Steam Library folder, normally under a steamapps directory. Steam’s Storage Manager updates its records and transfers that installed game to another library path. Your ownership, achievements, workshop subscriptions, and cloud settings remain associated with your Steam account; the operation changes where the local game files are stored.

This is different from uninstalling. An uninstall removes the local installation and normally requires a fresh download. A move copies or relocates the existing installation to the destination library, so you need enough free space on the destination drive for the selected game and temporary working space for Steam’s transfer process.
The supported workflow is to use Storage Manager, not to drag a game folder between drives in File Explorer. Manual folder moves can leave Steam’s library records pointing at the old path and produce an “uninstalled” status even when files are present.

Before you move anything
- Check the destination drive. Confirm that it is connected, has enough free capacity, and will remain available whenever you launch the game.
- Close the game. A running game, launcher, mod tool, or update can lock files and prevent a clean transfer.
- Pause downloads and updates. Let any active Steam operation finish before starting the move.
- Back up critical data. For a single-game move, copying important saves is prudent. For a full Steam installation move, back up the entire
steamappsfolder first; Steam warns that losing it can force you to reinstall the games. - Decide whether saves need separate handling. Steam Cloud can synchronize saves, but games that do not use Steam Cloud may store saves outside the game directory.
Move one or more games with Steam Storage Manager
1. Add a library on the destination drive
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Open Steam → Settings → Storage.
- Press the + button to add a storage location.
- Choose a folder on the other drive and add it as a Steam Library. Steam allows an alternate library path on any drive.
Add the destination before selecting a game to move. If the new drive does not appear, check that Windows has mounted it and that your account can write to the selected folder.
2. Select the source drive and game
- Remain in Settings → Storage.
- Use the drive selector to choose the drive that currently contains the installation.
- Tick the game you want to relocate. You can select multiple games when the destination has enough room.
- Choose Move, then select the library you added on the destination drive.
The available labels can vary slightly as Steam updates its client, but the operation is performed from Storage Manager. Do not delete the original files while Steam is transferring them.
3. Let Steam finish the transfer
Keep both drives connected and avoid shutting down the computer while Steam is writing. The duration depends on the amount of data and the drives involved; Valve’s published support guidance does not provide a universal transfer-time or speed figure. Wait until Steam reports completion before launching the game, starting another move, or disconnecting the destination.

4. Confirm the installation
Open your Library and start the game once Steam has completed the move. If Steam recognizes the files, it should launch from the new library without a redownload. If the title is shown as uninstalled, use the recovery procedure below rather than clicking Install immediately.

5. Verify files when recognition or launching fails
- Open the game’s Library page.
- Open the game’s properties and locate the installed-files option.
- Run Steam’s Verify integrity of game files command.
- Allow Steam to repair or reacquire only files that fail verification, then test the game again.
Steam recommends verification after a full installation move and whenever installed files are not recognized. Verification is a check of the moved installation; it is not the same as uninstalling the game.
When Steam says the moved game is uninstalled
This usually means Steam is not currently using the library path that contains the files. Open Settings → Storage and add the library path containing the moved game to Storage Manager. Once that path is registered, Steam can rescan the installation. If Steam still reports a problem, run file-integrity verification from the game’s properties.
Check the drive before doing anything destructive. An external drive that has disconnected, changed its drive letter, or gone to sleep can make an otherwise intact library appear unavailable. Reconnect the drive, make sure it is visible to the operating system, then return to Storage Manager and add its library path if necessary.
Move the complete Steam installation
Moving a single game is safer when you only need to free space. If you want Steam itself, its libraries, user data, and executable on another drive, use Steam’s documented full-relocation method.

Prepare and back up
- Exit Steam completely, including the Steam icon in the notification area. The client must not be running while its installation folder is moved.
- Make a backup copy of the
steamappsfolder. This is the folder Steam identifies as critical for preserving installed game data. - Keep the
steamappsfolder, theuserdatafolder, andsteam.exetogether in the Steam folder that will be relocated.
Relocate the folder
- Move the Steam folder to the desired location on the new drive.
- Start Steam by opening the relocated
steam.exe. - Sign in when prompted.
- Check the Library and Storage pages to confirm that the games and library path are detected.
Do not erase the old copy until the new location has been opened successfully and the games are visible. Keeping the backup until you have tested several titles gives you a recovery path if the move is interrupted.
If the direct relocation fails
- Restore or keep the backup of
steamapps. - Install Steam again in the desired location.
- Close the newly installed client if it starts automatically.
- Copy the backed-up
steamappsfolder into the new Steam installation. - Start Steam, add the library path in Storage Manager, and run integrity verification for the affected games.
This fallback preserves the downloaded game data while rebuilding Steam’s client files and library registration.
Protect saves before and after a move
Games that use Steam Cloud
Steam Cloud can synchronize supported save data between computers and installations. Confirm that Cloud is enabled for the title and allow Steam to finish syncing before you move or disconnect a drive. Cloud synchronization is not a substitute for a local backup when a save is important.
Games without Steam Cloud
Some third-party games store saves outside the Steam game directory. A common Windows location is C:Users[Windows user name]DocumentsMy Games, but the exact folder is selected by the game’s developer and can be elsewhere. Copy the relevant save folder separately before moving the installation, and restore it only after confirming the game has created the expected directory on the new setup.

What a game move does to saves
Moving the installed files does not automatically relocate save folders that live in Documents, AppData, a publisher launcher directory, or another developer-selected location. Treat the game files and save files as two separate items when planning a drive change.
Choose the right destination drive
The best destination depends on whether you are moving one title to free space, creating a second library, or relocating the entire client. Steam supports a library on another drive, but Valve specifically cautions against installing Steam to an external hard drive because of potential performance issues.
| Destination | Connection or format | Advantages | Risks and checks | Good fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Internal SSD | Usually SATA or NVMe | Direct internal connection and responsive game loading; the straightforward category for a permanent Steam library. | Confirm that the PC has the required SATA connector or NVMe slot, mounting space, and compatible drive format. | A primary or secondary library that stays in the PC. |
| Internal HDD | Usually SATA | Can provide large capacity for a library when capacity is more important than SSD responsiveness. | Check a free drive bay, SATA data connection, and power connection. No universal performance figure is established by Steam’s guidance. | Large libraries or less frequently played games. |
| External SSD | USB or another external interface | Portable capacity without opening the PC. | Steam warns that external installations can have performance issues; the connection must remain stable while Steam reads and writes. | Occasional portability when the drive can stay connected reliably. |
| External HDD | USB or another external interface | Portable bulk storage. | Combines external-connection risk with hard-drive latency. Disconnects or forced shutdowns while Steam writes can corrupt library and installation information. | Archival or infrequently used games, not a permanently connected primary library. |
| NVMe versus SATA | Internal interface choice | Both can host a Steam library when the motherboard and operating system support them. | Verify the exact slot, keying, mounting screw, and available lanes for NVMe; verify ports and cables for SATA. | Choose according to the PC’s available hardware and your capacity needs. |
Steam’s support pages do not publish a numeric load-time advantage, transfer-time estimate, or redownload-size saving for any drive type. Use the table for connection and reliability decisions, not as a promise of a particular benchmark result.

Valve’s guidance states: “It is not recommended that you install Steam to an external hard drive, due to potential performance issues.” Its troubleshooting guidance also notes that external drives can connect or disconnect at inopportune times, and that forced shutdowns while Steam is writing can corrupt library and installation information.

- Connect the drive before starting Steam and keep it connected while games are running.
- Use the operating system’s safe-eject process only after Steam is closed and all transfers have finished.
- Do not force power off the computer during a move, update, or verification.
- If the library disappears, reconnect the drive and confirm that its library path is present in Settings → Storage before attempting a reinstall.
Moving several games and managing space
Storage Manager lets you select multiple installed games from the source drive. This is useful when clearing a nearly full system drive, but it increases the amount of data at risk if the destination disconnects. Move a small group first, confirm that Steam recognizes and launches it, then continue with larger batches.
Leave room for updates and temporary files rather than filling the destination to its last available unit of capacity. Steam needs the destination library to be writable throughout the transfer. If a move cannot start, recheck free space on the destination, close applications that may be using the files, and ensure the destination library was added before you selected Move.
Common failure modes and fixes
The destination drive is missing from Storage
Confirm that the operating system sees the drive, then open Settings → Storage and use + to add a folder on that drive as a library. A drive that is disconnected, unmounted, or inaccessible to your account cannot receive a Steam library.

Keep the source and destination connected, close the game and any related launcher, and retry after the interrupted operation has ended. Do not delete the source copy until Steam reports a completed move. If the installation is present but not recognized afterward, add its library path and run integrity verification.
The game launches but files are reported as damaged
Use Verify integrity of game files. Steam will compare the installation and reacquire files that fail the check. Avoid manually mixing files from the old and new locations while verification is running.
The library vanished after rebooting
Check whether the destination is an external drive that was disconnected or assigned a different operating-system path. Reconnect it, then add the library location again in Storage Manager. If the drive repeatedly disappears, it is a reliability problem rather than a normal game-move requirement; an internal drive is the more dependable permanent destination.
You started an install instead of a move
Pause the new download and check Storage Manager for the existing library path. If the original files are still intact, register that path and verify the game before allowing Steam to download a second copy. Keep the backup until the existing installation is confirmed.
Quick Recap
Which method should you use?
- Freeing space on the system drive: Add a library on another internal drive and use Storage Manager to move only the largest or least-used games.
- Building a second game library: Add the destination once, then move titles in batches from the source drive.
- Replacing an old internal drive: Back up
steamapps, relocate the complete Steam folder if appropriate, and retain the fallback reinstall-and-copy method until every game is detected. - Using a portable drive: Add it as a library, but account for Valve’s external-drive performance and connection warnings and never disconnect it while Steam is active.
Final checklist
- Back up
steamappsbefore a full Steam-folder move. - Back up saves separately for games that do not use Steam Cloud.
- Add the destination library in Settings → Storage with the + button.
- Select the source drive, select the game or games, and choose Move.
- Wait for completion before launching, shutting down, or disconnecting a drive.
- If Steam says the game is uninstalled, add the library path containing the files and verify integrity.
- Keep an internal SSD in mind for a permanent destination, and treat external drives as a higher-risk option because of connection and performance issues.
