This feature requires the Discord desktop app on Windows 10 or Windows 11. It is not available as the same in-game overlay on macOS, Linux, Discord’s browser version, or mobile apps.

Before you start
- Use Discord’s Windows desktop app.
- Make sure the overlay is enabled in User Settings → Overlay. Discord may label the game list Registered Games, Game Activity, or something similar depending on the client version.
- Confirm the specific game is detected and has overlay access enabled.
- Run the game in windowed or borderless/windowed-fullscreen mode. Discord says the revamped overlay does not work in true exclusive fullscreen. See Discord’s known-issue guidance.
Discord’s overlay shortcut has changed across versions, and Discord’s own pages currently show different defaults. One official page lists Ctrl + `, while current Support pages list Shift + `. Use the shortcut shown in your own User Settings → Keybinds or User Settings → Overlay; that local setting is authoritative.

- Open Discord’s desktop app and join the voice channel or conversation you want to use.
- Launch the game.
- Press your configured overlay shortcut.
- If the overlay is locked, use the overlay lock control or your Toggle Overlay Lock keybind to unlock it.
- Find the widget you want to move, such as the voice participant list, chat panel, video window, stream preview, or notification panel.
- Click and drag the widget’s dotted outline, border, or header area to a new position. Avoid dragging the avatar, message text, video itself, or interactive buttons.
- Drag an edge or resize handle if the widget is too large or covers too much of the game.
- Click the pin control if you want the widget to remain visible after closing the full overlay. Unpin or hide it when you only want it available while the overlay is open.
- Press the overlay shortcut again to return to normal gameplay.
Discord describes the redesigned overlay as a collection of individual widgets rather than one fixed Discord window. Its 2025 announcement explains the widget-based layout and its overlay guide shows the dotted-line drag interaction.

Move a particular overlay element
Voice participants
Open the full overlay, unlock it, and drag the voice widget by its border or header. Resize it if the participant list covers a minimap, subtitles, or another important HUD element.
Chat and text messages
Move the chat widget in the live overlay using the same drag method. If you only want occasional access, leave it unpinned so it disappears when the full overlay closes.

Video calls and streams
Video and stream windows are separate overlay elements. Move them by their surrounding frame or header, not by clicking the video content. Some games or client states may limit how individual elements behave.
Notifications
Notification placement is not necessarily the same as widget placement. A corner-position setting for text notifications controls where new-message alerts appear; it does not automatically move the voice, video, stream, or chat widget. To reposition those elements, open the overlay during gameplay and drag each widget directly.

Discord’s Game Overlay 101 documentation describes pinning and showing or hiding overlay elements such as notifications, voice, video, activity, and streams.
How to change the overlay shortcut or unlock key
To inspect or change the shortcut, open User Settings → Keybinds. Depending on your Discord release, overlay controls may also be shown under User Settings → Overlay.

Look for actions such as:
- Toggle Overlay — opens or closes the in-game overlay.
- Toggle Overlay Lock — switches between an editable and locked overlay.
Discord documents custom keybinds in its keybind help page. A custom keyboard layout can also change how the grave/backtick key is entered, so checking the configured keybind is more reliable than assuming a universal shortcut.

If the Discord widget will not move
- Open the full overlay. A pinned widget that remains visible while the main overlay is closed may not be draggable in that state.
- Unlock it. Check for an overlay lock control, or assign and use Toggle Overlay Lock under User Settings → Keybinds.
- Drag the correct area. Try the dotted border, title/header area, or empty widget background.
- Click inside the overlay once. Some games keep mouse focus or capture the cursor for gameplay.
- Switch display modes. Temporarily use borderless or windowed mode instead of true exclusive fullscreen.
- Check the game-specific toggle. A globally enabled overlay can still be disabled for the particular game.
- Test another supported game. If the overlay works there, the original game may have a compatibility or rendering conflict.
- Restart Discord and the game. This can refresh game detection and the overlay hook.
- Disable the overlay for that game if necessary. Discord recommends disabling it when it causes lag, crashes, input problems, or other instability.
If the game crashes with the overlay enabled, follow Discord’s troubleshooting instructions for collecting the overlay hook log and contacting Support. Not every game supports every overlay behavior, and Discord has changed the overlay substantially since the revamped version began rolling out in April 2024.

Legacy and redesigned Discord overlays
Discord began rolling out its revamped Game Overlay in 2024 and announced a redesigned version in March 2025. The newer interface uses independently movable widgets, which is why moving the voice panel is different from changing a single corner setting.
Some Discord builds may still offer a legacy overlay as a compatibility option. It can help with a particular game, but Discord describes the legacy mode as transitional and has indicated it may eventually be removed. Treat it as a troubleshooting option rather than the preferred long-term layout.
How to disable the overlay
To disable it for one game, open Discord’s game or activity settings, select the detected game, and turn off its overlay toggle. The exact menu name may vary between Discord releases.

Disable the overlay when it interferes with mouse input, covers essential HUD information, causes crashes or lag, or conflicts with a game’s anti-cheat or rendering system. If you still need Discord while playing, use the desktop app on a second monitor, a phone or tablet, push-to-talk keybinds, or the game’s own voice chat instead.
