The steps below cover Fabric; for another loader, use that loader’s own installation instructions.
Before you download a mod
Check the mod’s listing before installing it. These three details need to match your setup:
- Minecraft version: The mod must support the game version you intend to play.
- Mod loader: Use the loader the mod requires, such as Fabric or Forge. A mod made for one loader may not work with another.
- Dependencies: Read the requirements and install any libraries or other mods it lists.
Fabric’s Installing Mods guide advises downloading mods only from sources you trust. Mojang Studios does not create, review, or endorse third-party mods.
How to install Fabric mods manually
1. Install Fabric for the right Minecraft version
Follow Fabric’s Windows installation instructions or the official Fabric instructions for your operating system. On Windows, close Minecraft and the Minecraft Launcher before running the installer. The Windows .exe installer uses the Java bundled with the official Launcher.

2. Open or create the mods folder
Fabric’s default game-directory paths are:
- Windows:
%appdata%.minecraftmods - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods - Linux:
~/.minecraft/mods
If there is no mods folder in the game directory, create one with that exact name. If you use a custom game directory, use its mods folder instead of the default path.
3. Add the mod and its required dependencies
Move the downloaded, compatible mod .jar file into the mods folder. Install any dependencies listed by the mod in the same way. Many Fabric mods require Fabric API, but not all do; check the individual mod’s requirements rather than adding it automatically.
4. Launch the Fabric profile
Open the Minecraft Launcher, choose the Fabric profile for the Minecraft version you installed, and start the game. If the mod does not appear to load, check that you launched the correct profile and that the mod and its dependencies match both its loader and game version.
Installing a mod for Forge or another loader
The same compatibility checks apply, but the mod’s required loader determines which installation steps and profile to use. Install that loader using its official instructions, put the mod files in the game directory’s mods folder, add any listed dependencies, and launch the profile created for that loader. Do not assume that a Fabric mod will work with Forge, or vice versa.

- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.

- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
What to do if Minecraft crashes
Mods can make the game malfunction or become unplayable. Start by checking the setup rather than assuming every crash has the same cause:
- Confirm that the selected Launcher profile uses the loader the mod requires.
- Verify that the mod supports your Minecraft version and that each listed dependency is installed.
- If you recently added a mod, try removing it from the
modsfolder and launching again to see whether the problem changes.
Minecraft Help’s launcher crash troubleshooting guide recommends creating a fresh Java Edition installation to help determine whether a corrupt installation is causing crashes. If the fresh installation works, investigate downloaded mods or advanced settings in the earlier installation. This is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix for every mod crash.

Support and edition limits
These instructions are for Minecraft: Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition add-ons. Minecraft Help explains that modding is not officially supported and that Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage. Treat third-party mod files accordingly: Mojang’s guidance does not mean those files have been reviewed or endorsed.
