Xbox saves can move to a Windows PC only when the specific game supports Xbox Play Anywhere or another documented Xbox-to-PC cross-save system. Sign in on both devices with the same Microsoft/Xbox account and allow the Xbox cloud synchronization to finish. PlayStation is different: there is no platform-level Xbox-to-PS4 or Xbox-to-PS5 import. Your only supported route is a game whose publisher explicitly provides cross-progression between Xbox and PlayStation.
A USB drive, cable, or generic save utility cannot convert an Xbox save into a format that every PC or PlayStation game can read. Check the exact game, edition, storefront and destination before you download anything or overwrite a cloud copy.

What actually determines whether an Xbox save can move
Save transfer is controlled by the game, not by a universal Xbox export command. The destination platform, game edition and account system must all be supported. Two games from the same publisher can use completely different save systems, so a successful transfer in one title does not establish support in another.
Xbox to Windows PC
Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere program lets participating digital games share entitlement and cloud-save progress between an Xbox console and Windows PC. Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere designation or icon on the game’s Microsoft Store listing. The designation is title-specific; owning an Xbox version does not automatically make every PC version compatible.

Some games use a separate, publisher-documented Xbox-PC cross-save service instead of Play Anywhere. Treat that as supported only when the game’s own listing or support documentation says so. A PC game that merely offers cross-play, shared achievements or an Xbox-branded login may still keep its save files separate.
Xbox to PlayStation
Play Anywhere covers Xbox and Windows PC, not PlayStation. Xbox has no setting that exports a save directly into PS4 or PS5 storage. A move to PlayStation works only when the individual game and its publisher implement cross-progression, usually by storing progress on a publisher account server and linking that account on both platforms.
Cross-play and cross-progression are different features. Cross-play lets players on different systems join the same session; cross-progression lets an account carry progress between systems. Confirm the latter specifically, including which modes, purchases and generations are covered.

The table’s cost column matters because a supported save transfer is not always the same as owning the destination game. Play Anywhere can share entitlement for participating digital titles, but the store listing and publisher requirements control. For other games, you may need to purchase a Windows, PS4 or PS5 edition even though your progression is linked. Do not assume that a subscription catalog copy, disc license or bundled edition follows the same rules as the listed digital release.
Move an Xbox save to a Windows PC
Use this procedure for a Play Anywhere title or another game with an explicit Xbox-PC cross-save statement. It is safer to verify support before installing the PC game, because launching an unsupported edition can create a new, empty local save that is easy to confuse with the synchronized one.
1. Identify the exact game and edition
- Open the game’s Microsoft Store listing or the publisher’s support page.
- Confirm the Xbox Play Anywhere icon, or find an explicit statement that Xbox and Windows PC share saves.
- Check whether the Xbox and PC versions are the same supported edition. A differently packaged edition, region or storefront can have separate progression rules.
- Check whether the game distinguishes a standard release from a remaster, next-generation edition, cloud version or subscription version.
- Read the publisher’s PC requirements before downloading. Play Anywhere entitlement does not remove ordinary hardware, operating-system or installation requirements.
If the listing does not mention Play Anywhere or another Xbox-PC cross-save feature, assume the save will not appear on PC until the publisher confirms otherwise. Do not infer support from a Windows logo alone; the logo can describe availability without promising a shared save container.
2. Finish synchronization on Xbox
- Connect the Xbox to the internet and make sure you are signed in to the Microsoft/Xbox account that owns the progress.
- Start the game and reach the latest progress, if necessary. If you changed settings or created a new save while offline, give the game a chance to write that state locally first.
- Save normally, then close the game while the console is online. Fully quitting is preferable to leaving the title suspended when you are trying to establish the final cloud copy.
- Wait for synchronization to finish before launching the PC edition. Xbox game saves compare local and cloud timestamps and upload newer local data; interrupting that process can leave the cloud copy behind.
Do not rely on an offline session as the final copy. Progress made while offline can remain only in local storage until the console reconnects and completes synchronization. If the console reports that syncing is still in progress, do not shut it down or start the game on another device yet.

3. Launch the supported PC edition
- Install the Windows version identified in step one.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft/Xbox account used on the console. Play Anywhere progress is associated with the gamertag, not merely with the Windows computer.
- Start the game and allow its initial sign-in and save check to complete. The cloud copy should download or become available automatically when the title supports the feature.
- Load the newest save and verify a recognizable checkpoint, inventory, achievement state or other progress marker before continuing.
- Make a small, deliberate save on the PC, close the game and allow that change to synchronize before returning to the Xbox. This confirms that the two-way path is working rather than merely displaying an old cloud copy.
If the PC opens at an introductory screen, do not immediately overwrite the cloud data. Quit, verify the account and edition, and check the title’s support instructions. An unsupported version can create a separate local profile that has no relationship to the Xbox save.
4. Handle a save-conflict dialog carefully
If both the console’s local file and the cloud file changed, Xbox can ask which state to keep. Read the timestamps or device descriptions in the dialog. Choose the copy that contains the progress you intend to preserve; selecting the wrong option can replace a newer cloud save with an older local state, or vice versa.
When you are uncertain, stop before confirming. Put the original Xbox online, close the game, and let it synchronize again. Avoid making additional changes on the PC until you have resolved which copy is authoritative. Record which device has the latest checkpoint, inventory or completion percentage so the choice is based on content, not just a vague date.
Why an Xbox save may not appear on PC
The game is not Play Anywhere
Play Anywhere is not a general Xbox feature that applies to every title. A game can have an Xbox version and a Windows version while keeping separate saves. Verify the store icon or a publisher statement for the exact game.

Using a different Microsoft account on Windows creates a different gamertag context. Sign out and check the account identity on both devices before reinstalling or deleting data. If the game also uses a publisher account, verify that the same publisher profile is linked to the same Xbox identity.
The console was offline or synchronization was interrupted
Reconnect the Xbox, open the game, save, close it and wait for the cloud operation to finish. A local save made offline is not guaranteed to be present in the cloud. Network interruptions, suspended gameplay and shutting down during a sync can all leave an older cloud timestamp.
The editions or storefronts differ
Confirm the PC edition, region and entitlement. A supported console edition does not prove that every PC package, subscription release or separately sold edition shares the same save container. Remasters and platform-generation upgrades may have their own migration rules.

You accepted the wrong conflict choice
Conflict dialogs exist because two versions changed. If you selected an older copy, stop playing on both devices and check whether the game or publisher provides a recovery procedure. Do not assume that deleting local files will restore a cloud version; deletion behavior varies by title. Further play can make recovery harder by creating yet another timestamp.
The title uses a separate account service
Some games do not use the Xbox cloud-save container for all progression. They may keep campaign saves locally while sending online characters, statistics or unlocks to a publisher server. Read the game’s documentation to learn exactly what transfers; an account link may not carry every single-player slot.
Move an Xbox save to PS4 or PS5
There is no Xbox export command that makes a save readable by PlayStation. Xbox cloud saves and PlayStation saved-data storage use platform-specific systems, and Play Anywhere does not extend to PS4 or PS5.
Use the game’s own cross-progression system
- Find the game’s official support documentation and confirm that Xbox and PlayStation are both listed for cross-progression, not merely cross-play.
- Read the account-linking instructions. The game may require a publisher account connected to your Xbox profile and your PlayStation Network account.
- Check edition, region, platform-generation and migration limits. Some systems exclude certain modes, purchased add-ons, virtual currency or progress created before an account link.
- On Xbox, finish the latest session online and allow the game’s account service to upload progress.
- Install the supported PS4 or PS5 edition, sign in to the same linked publisher account, and follow the game’s import or synchronization prompt.
- Verify a known level, character, item or statistic before playing further. If the destination starts a blank profile, stop and review the account-link status instead of creating more progress on the wrong account.
Only the game’s official documentation can establish whether this route exists. A game supporting cross-play does not necessarily support cross-progression, and a publisher account that stores statistics does not necessarily store the complete campaign save. Some publishers also restrict transfers by generation, region, account history or one-time migration windows, so read those limits before linking accounts.
What will not work
- Copying an Xbox save to a USB drive and plugging it into a PlayStation.
- Connecting the consoles with a cable and expecting one platform to read the other’s save format.
- Using a generic save-transfer utility as a universal Xbox-to-PlayStation converter.
- Assuming that a PlayStation cloud subscription can import an Xbox cloud save.
- Using cross-play invitations or shared multiplayer matchmaking as evidence that the single-player save will transfer.
These actions cannot create support that the game and publisher have not implemented. They can also expose the account to unsupported tools or cause you to overwrite a valid destination save.

PlayStation’s own cloud-save workflow
PlayStation documents online-storage transfers for PlayStation saved data. This workflow moves a supported PlayStation save between PlayStation devices; it does not import an Xbox save.
Saved data for streamed and downloaded games is handled differently. PlayStation states that saved data is not automatically transferred between those types, but it can be moved through PlayStation online storage. Check whether the game is streamed or downloaded before looking for a save, because the two locations may not show the same files.

Upload a downloaded PS4 game save
- On the source console, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4).
- Choose Upload or Delete from Console Storage.
- Select Upload to Cloud Storage, choose the game and save, then confirm.
- Wait for the upload to complete and note the save date so you can identify the intended copy.
Download the save on the destination
- On the destination PlayStation, return to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4).
- Choose Download or Delete from Cloud Storage.
- Select the game and save, then download it to console storage.
- Launch the game and verify the expected progress before making a new save.
Menu labels vary between PS4 and PS5 and between downloaded and streamed game types. Follow the labels shown on the console and the game’s support instructions. This procedure is useful after an Xbox-to-PlayStation move only when the game’s own cross-progression system has already created a PlayStation-compatible save.
Do you need a USB drive?
No for the supported Xbox-to-PC cloud workflow, and no as a universal Xbox-to-PlayStation solution. Play Anywhere uses account-linked cloud synchronization. A publisher’s cross-progression service uses its own server-side account system. PlayStation’s documented transfer uses PlayStation online storage for PlayStation saves.

Removable storage can be useful for platform-specific backup tasks when that console and game support them, but it cannot translate an Xbox save into an unrelated PlayStation format. Buying a drive or cable before confirming game support risks spending money on hardware that cannot solve the compatibility problem. If official instructions mention a backup device for a particular platform, follow those instructions only for that platform and title.
Costs, subscriptions and ownership checks
There is no universal transfer fee established by Xbox or PlayStation. The practical cost depends on the destination edition and the game’s account service. A Play Anywhere title may share the participating digital entitlement between Xbox and Windows PC, while another title may require a separate PC purchase. If your destination is PS4 or PS5
Pause until the publisher confirms Xbox-to-PlayStation cross-progression for the exact game. If there is no such statement, there is no supported direct transfer path. PlayStation online storage can move a save after it exists on PlayStation; it cannot create that save from Xbox data.
