Which PS5 game is the closest fit for a post-apocalyptic FPS?
Metro Exodus: story, stealth, and survival horror
Metro Exodus is the most direct match if you want a first-person shooter built around a narrative journey. The US PlayStation Store listing describes a mix of combat, stealth, exploration, and survival horror. The story takes you from the ruins of Moscow across post-apocalyptic Russia, through large, non-linear areas.
That blend makes it more than a sequence of firefights: stealth and exploration sit alongside combat, and the survival-horror elements shape its tone. The US listing identifies PS4 and PS5 versions and lists Standard, Gold, and Metro Saga Bundle editions. Editions and availability can vary by region, so check your local Store listing.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: open-world survival pressure
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is the stronger match if you want a harsher survival adventure rather than a primarily cinematic journey. Its US PlayStation Store listing calls it an unforgiving FPS survival adventure, blending first-person shooting with immersive-sim and horror elements in an open world. It emphasizes scavenging for gear and resources, hunting artifacts, and making difficult survival choices.

The US Store lists Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate editions. It also lists DualSense vibration and trigger-effect support, and PS5 Pro enhancement. Those are storefront feature labels, not independent performance tests. The listing’s content descriptors include blood and gore, intense violence, strong language, and use of alcohol and tobacco; check the rating and descriptors for your region if suitability matters.
Fallout 4: a wasteland RPG-shooter, not a first-person-only FPS
Fallout 4 fits the setting, but it is best understood as an open-world RPG-shooter. PlayStation’s post-apocalyptic games overview says you can switch between first- and third-person views. It highlights roaming post-apocalyptic Massachusetts, upgrading weapons and armor, and building a home with scavenged resources.

Choose it if you want role-playing, exploration, equipment upgrades, and settlement construction as much as shooting. If you specifically want a game that stays in first person, its optional third-person perspective makes it a less exact fit. Confirm current PS5 compatibility and edition details in your local PlayStation Store; the overview is not a current product listing.

What PS5 features are confirmed?
Metro Exodus
In a June 17, 2021 PlayStation.Blog post, 4A Games Executive Producer Jon Bloch described the PS5 upgrade as targeting 60 FPS and 4K, with fully ray-traced lighting, faster loading using the SSD, and 3D Audio support. These are the developer’s launch-era specifications, not a current independent benchmark of frame-rate stability or image quality. Bloch also described DualSense haptics for weapon discharge, recoil, reloads, jams, and equipment handling, plus adaptive triggers for certain weapons and interactions. The PS5 Store listing identifies DualSense vibration and trigger-effect support and PS5 Pro enhancement. The cited listing does not establish independent measurements of resolution, frame-rate stability, or input latency, so treat the feature labels as compatibility information rather than a performance verdict.
Can you buy Metro Exodus on disc for PS5?
Yes: 4A Games said the PS5 upgrade was free for existing PS4 owners and that newcomers could buy the Complete Edition on disc. That statement comes from Bloch’s June 17, 2021 PlayStation.Blog announcement. Check local retailers for current stock and confirm the disc edition’s contents before buying. Digital editions listed by the US Store are a separate route; regional editions and availability may differ.

Metro 2039 is announced, not currently available. Deep Silver announced a February 4, 2027 release date, with February 5 in some territories, including Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. The publisher and PlayStation.Blog describe it as a solo, story-driven FPS for PS5 and PS5 Pro, with a 60 FPS Performance Mode with ray tracing. Deep Silver says it will share more technical specifications and modes before release. These are announced plans and may change; see the Deep Silver announcement and PlayStation.Blog for details.
If you want a game to play now, choose between Metro Exodus and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 based on whether story-led pacing or open-world survival appeals more. Waiting makes sense if you specifically want the next announced Metro story and can hold off until its planned 2027 launch.
