Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Raise the Stealth 700’s microphone boom fully toward the earcup to mute your microphone. Lower it into the normal speaking position to unmute. On the original and Gen 2 models documented by Turtle Beach, a confirmation tone normally indicates the change. These instructions apply to the original Stealth 700 for Xbox One or PS4/PS4 Pro and Stealth 700 Gen 2 for Xbox or PlayStation; later Stealth 700-branded models may use different controls.
How to mute the Stealth 700 microphone
- Find the microphone boom on the side of the headset.
- Flip or rotate the boom upward and back toward the earcup.
- Raise it completely until it reaches its stop, then listen for the mute tone.
The original Xbox One instructions describe flipping the boom back to mute, while the PlayStation guides say to flip it up. The physical result is the same: the boom must be fully raised. A partially raised boom may not engage the mute switch. See Turtle Beach’s original Xbox One controls guide and original PS4/PS4 Pro guide.
This mutes outgoing microphone audio. Game sound, music and incoming party chat can continue through the earcups.
How to unmute it
- Flip the boom downward and forward.
- Push it fully into the normal speaking position.
- Wait for the unmute tone before speaking, or verify the platform’s microphone meter.
Do not use the Mode, Power, Bluetooth or volume controls for the headset’s documented microphone mute operation; the boom position is the primary control.

How to tell whether the microphone is muted
| Model | Mute action | Documented confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Stealth 700 for Xbox One | Flip the boom back | High-to-low mute tone; low-to-high unmute tone |
| Stealth 700 for PS4/PS4 Pro | Flip the boom up | Mic Monitoring is unavailable while muted |
| Stealth 700 Gen 2 PS | Flip the boom up | Audible tone; the PS transmitter guide also lists a breathing-red LED for microphone mute |
| Stealth 700 Gen 2 Xbox | Flip the boom up | Audible mute and unmute tones |

Microphone mute is not headset-audio mute
Raising the boom stops your microphone signal from being sent to the console, computer or chat app. It does not mute what you hear. To silence game or chat audio, use the headset’s volume control or the audio controls in your console, computer or application. Those controls are separate from microphone mute.

What to do if the mic will not mute
- Raise the boom completely. Lower it and raise it again deliberately, waiting for the tone.
- Check the platform or app. Xbox, PlayStation, Windows, Discord, Zoom and other software can apply their own microphone mute state.
- Confirm the input device. Make sure the system is using the Stealth 700 microphone, not a controller, webcam, laptop or phone microphone.
- Check feedback settings. Audio Hub can adjust tone volume on documented original models. A missing tone may reflect a lowered tone setting, a disconnected headset or model-specific feedback behavior; it does not prove that the mic is unmuted.
- Update firmware when appropriate. Turtle Beach’s Gen 2 Xbox support history lists version 2.0.3, dated January 1, 2021, as fixing a microphone-mute bug. Treat that version as historical, not as a claim about the current 2026 release. Firmware updates use Audio Hub on Windows or Mac. The Gen 2 Xbox update page and Gen 2 PS update page provide model-specific procedures.
- Restart and retest. Power-cycle the headset, reconnect its transmitter if applicable, and test in another chat or recording app.
- Check for mechanical failure. If there is never a tone and the platform still receives audio after a full boom raise, the boom switch may be worn or damaged; contact Turtle Beach support.
Gen 2 Xbox Bluetooth exception
During a simultaneous Bluetooth call, the Gen 2 Xbox handles Bluetooth and console/PC microphone paths separately. Turtle Beach documents that console/PC outgoing microphone audio is muted during the Bluetooth call, while the Bluetooth call can still use the headset microphone. See the Gen 2 Xbox Bluetooth guidance if the behavior seems inconsistent.
Does Mic Monitoring work while muted?
No. Turtle Beach states that Mic Monitoring is unavailable while the microphone is muted on the documented original and Gen 2 models. Hearing or not hearing your own voice is only a local sidetone indication; check the platform’s input meter when you need proof of the outgoing microphone state.

Which Stealth 700 model do you have?
- Original Xbox One: The Xbox One wireless model, documented in the original controls and microphone guides.
- Original PS4/PS4 Pro: The PlayStation model covered by Turtle Beach’s PS4/PS4 Pro quick-start guide.
- Gen 2 PS or Gen 2 Xbox: The second-generation models with platform-specific transmitters and quick-start guides.
Check the label, packaging or transmitter before relying on a platform-specific LED description. The original PS4/PS4 Pro headset can also use a wired Mobile/VR mode, so wireless behavior should not automatically be assumed in that connection mode; see Turtle Beach’s Mobile/VR guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can the mute control be remapped?
Turtle Beach documents remapping the Gen 2 Mode button and mappable wheel through the mobile Audio Hub app. The documented microphone mute remains the physical boom flip; the available sources do not establish a universal software remap for that function. See the Gen 2 PS mappable-buttons guide and Gen 2 Xbox mappable-buttons guide.
