How to Normalize Volume Across Videos in a 24/7 Relaxation Stream

A practical LUFS-based workflow for making a 24/7 relaxation stream sound more consistent without crushing quiet ambience or treating a broadcast target as a universal rule.

Measure each prerecorded video with an integrated loudness meter, apply a consistent static gain adjustment toward a target you choose for your stream, then check true peaks and audition transitions. Do not confuse peak normalization with loudness matching, and do not force every quiet ambience clip to the same dynamic shape. Because the destination platform and listening context are unspecified, there is no single defensible LUFS target or true-peak ceiling for every relaxation stream.

What to normalize—and what not to normalize

Peak normalization sets a file’s highest peak to a chosen level; it does not make the overall perceived loudness of different files consistent. Integrated loudness, measured in LUFS, is more useful for comparing the overall level of complete audio programs, while peak and true-peak readings help identify overload risk. EBU Tech 3343 discusses the move from peak normalization to loudness normalization, and AES guidance distinguishes integrated loudness from peak level. EBU Tech 3343 · AES standards resources.

For a relaxation stream, start with uniform gain changes to the prerecorded assets. Raising a quiet file can bring its peaks too high; limiting may control those peaks, but can alter transients and ambience. Avoid compressing every clip merely to make its waveform or dynamics look alike. Preserve intentional contrasts—such as a sleep segment that is meant to sit below a brighter nature loop—by grouping those roles separately or choosing a target that retains the contrast.

Choose a target that fits the actual destination

Published loudness figures are context-specific references, not universal instructions for online relaxation streams. EBU R 128 version 5.0 recommends an average programme loudness of -23 LUFS for its broadcast context. AES TD1008 version 3.13 lists -16 LUFS for track normalization in its specified music-streaming context, including automatically assembled streams. Neither establishes the correct target for an unspecified live-stream platform or relaxation program. EBU R 128 · AES TD1008 and standards documents.

Reference Figure and context How to use it
EBU R 128 v5.0 -23 LUFS average programme loudness; European Broadcasting Union, 2023. A broadcast reference, not a blanket internet livestream target.
AES TD1008 v3.13 -16 LUFS track normalization in the specified music-streaming context, including automatically assembled streams. The reviewed document excerpt does not establish a publication date. An online music context; do not assume it governs every platform or ambience program.
Audacity manual -23 LUFS is the Loudness Normalization effect’s default. The manual says streaming platform targets are usually a few LU higher than broadcast. A software default and general note, not a target tailored to this stream.

Before settling on a number, check the destination’s current ingest specifications and decide whether continuity or the intended dynamic contrast matters more. Also decide whether to normalize each asset independently or measure a continuous program as a whole. The cited guidance does not establish a live-stream-specific target or true-peak ceiling for this use case, so do not present one as a platform requirement.

A practical normalization workflow

  1. Group by listening role. Separate material whose intended level or character differs, such as quiet sleep ambience and a more present nature loop. Decide which differences should remain audible before processing.
  2. Measure every complete source asset. Use the same integrated loudness measurement method for each file. Record integrated LUFS and true peak. AES describes measuring the full audio duration for integrated loudness before correcting amplitude to the selected target. AES standards documents.
  3. Calculate a starting gain offset. Subtract the measured LUFS value from the chosen target. For example, if a clip measures -27 LUFS and your selected target is -23 LUFS, the initial adjustment is +4 dB. This is an arithmetic example, not a recommendation that -23 LUFS is right for your stream. Re-measure after applying processing.
  4. Check the peak result before accepting the gain. If raising the clip makes true peaks unsafe or causes overload, do not blindly force it to the target. Try a lower shared target or gentle peak control, then listen for changes to transients and quiet textures. AES notes that upward normalization may require limiting and that limiting can change the sound. AES TD1008.
  5. Audition joins in sequence. Listen to each clip’s opening and ending beside its neighboring assets. A whole-file integrated measurement can hide a quiet opening or a sudden transition jump. Short-term loudness readings can help locate the problem, but the reviewed guidance establishes no short-term target for relaxation streams; make the final decision by listening in context.
  6. Use bus processing only as a safety net. Monitor the stream output for overload. If you add a limiter, set it to catch unexpected peaks rather than continuously reshape the ambience. Listen for pumping, level movement, or noise becoming prominent as passages quiet down. Real-time correction cannot predict later material and may override intended dynamic changes, according to AES guidance. AES standards documents.
  7. Recheck the actual encoded stream. Encoding, platform processing, playback devices, and viewer-side controls can affect what listeners hear. Check representative playback rather than assuming that source-file measurements describe the final experience.

What YouTube’s Stable volume does—and does not do

YouTube describes Stable volume as a viewer control that “balances the range between quiet and loud, continuously adjusting volume levels to reduce variations in sound.” It is enabled by default for eligible viewer playback, but is not available for all videos and is off for YouTube Music and official music videos. It is separate from creator-side mastering and does not establish a target for your outgoing livestream mix. YouTube Help: Control video volume on your device.

Audacity as one software example

Audacity’s Loudness Normalization effect measures perceived loudness in LUFS and defaults to -23 LUFS. That default is a software setting, not a tailored delivery recommendation. For ordinary stereo material, do not normalize left and right channels independently: Audacity’s manual warns that doing so can change stereo balance. Audacity manual: Loudness Normalization.
