How to Open the Console in Minecraft: Chat and Commands by Platform

Minecraft players enter most commands through chat: press T on a keyboard, right on a controller’s D-pad, or tap the speech bubble on mobile. Command permissions are separate from opening chat.

In Minecraft, players usually enter commands through the in-game chat rather than a separate console window. Press T on a keyboard, press right on the D-pad on a controller, or tap the speech-bubble button on mobile. Then enter a command beginning with /, such as /help, and submit it.

Open chat on your device

The exact input depends on how you play. Minecraft’s controls guide documents these default ways to open chat:

  • Keyboard: Press T. Chat appears in the bottom-left corner.
  • Controller: Press right on the D-pad. The controls guide describes this input for controllers, including Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch.
  • Phone or tablet: Tap the speech-bubble button at the top of the screen to open chat.

Once chat is open, type a slash command—for example, /help—and send it. Minecraft’s command guide says commands entered in chat should begin with /. Suggestions appear as you type; press Tab to autocomplete or cycle through suggestions, and use the Up Arrow to recall a command you sent earlier.

Why “console” can mean two things

For a player in a world, “console” usually means the chat box used to enter commands. A Minecraft server also has its own server console, which is separate from the in-game chat and is generally managed by the server operator. For ordinary player commands, start with chat.

If chat opens but the command will not run

Opening chat and having permission to execute commands are separate. The setting or permission you need depends on the edition and whether you are playing alone or on a server.

Bedrock single-player

In the world settings, open the Game tab and enable Allow Cheats. Microsoft’s Bedrock commands guide warns that enabling cheats disables achievements for that world, even if you turn cheats off again later.

Java single-player

Enable Allow Commands when creating the world, or later through World Options. Minecraft’s command guide describes both routes.

Multiplayer

Commands require a sufficiently high permission level. In Bedrock, the world owner may also need to enable the player’s Operator Commands permission; Microsoft notes that this can affect commands entered in chat and access to command blocks. If you are on someone else’s server, ask its owner or administrator for the required access.

If the documented control does not work

The controls above are Minecraft’s documented defaults. If a key has been remapped, check the game’s Controls settings for the current binding. The safest documented keyboard route is T; do not assume that pressing / opens chat on every platform or version.
