For Nintendo’s troubleshooting menu, power the console fully off, hold Volume Up and Volume Down, press Power, and keep holding both volume buttons until the menu appears. Enthusiast Tegra RCM is a separate low-level mode with a different entry method and hardware limits.
Which Switch mode do you mean?
| Mode | Purpose | How entry works |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Maintenance/Recovery Mode | Consumer troubleshooting, including updating or initializing the console. | With the console fully powered off, hold Volume Up and Volume Down, press Power, and keep holding both volume buttons until the menu appears. Nintendo’s instructions describe this procedure. |
| Enthusiast Tegra RCM | Low-level mode used in payload workflows; it is not Nintendo’s consumer recovery menu. | Community documentation describes using a jig in the right Joy-Con rail, then holding Volume Up while pressing Power. This does not establish that a payload will run. See the community RCM guide. |
How to open Nintendo’s Maintenance/Recovery Mode
- Make sure the console is fully powered off, not merely asleep. Nintendo says this mode cannot be accessed while the console is on or in sleep mode.
- Press and hold Volume Up and Volume Down together.
- While holding both volume buttons, press Power.
- Keep holding Volume Up and Volume Down until the Maintenance Mode menu appears, then follow the option you need.
Nintendo documents this menu for recovery tasks such as updating or initializing the system. If the console is unresponsive, hold Power for 12 seconds to force it to shut down, then try the entry sequence again. See Nintendo’s Maintenance Mode instructions.
How enthusiast Tegra RCM entry differs
The community-described procedure for compatible standard hardware uses a jig fitted into the right Joy-Con rail to trigger entry; hold Volume Up while pressing Power. That is not the same button sequence as Nintendo’s Maintenance Mode. A jig is a physical tool for this enthusiast procedure, not a universal accessory for every Switch or a guarantee of exploit or payload compatibility. Consult maintained technical guidance for your exact console before proceeding.
Check your Switch model before assuming compatibility
Nintendo identifies the standard Switch as HAC-001(-01), Switch Lite as HDH-001, and Switch OLED as HEG-001 in its technical specifications. These identifiers distinguish models, but hardware revision is also relevant to exploit compatibility.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
The cited community RCM guide says HAC-001(-01), Lite, and OLED units are patched against the bootROM exploit it discusses. This is an exploit-specific compatibility statement, not a restriction on using Nintendo’s consumer Maintenance/Recovery Mode, which Nintendo documents for Switch, Lite, and OLED. Identify your actual console and verify current technical guidance rather than assuming that a jig makes patched hardware exploitable.
