For a practical PC starting point, use Performance rendering mode, lower detail settings, and compare results in an actual match—not just the lobby. There is no one configuration or guaranteed FPS gain for every computer: Fortnite’s performance depends on your hardware, display, and preferred balance between visual clarity and responsiveness.
Recommended Fortnite settings for a performance-focused starting point
Epic Games Store’s April 30, 2026 competitive-settings guide recommends the following baseline. Treat it as a starting point, then adjust one setting at a time and compare similar gameplay with the in-game FPS counter enabled.
| Setting | Starting point | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Window Mode | Fullscreen | Epic recommends it to minimize input lag. |
| Resolution | Your monitor’s native resolution | Some competitive players use 1920×1080, but that is an observed choice, not a universal recommendation. Lowering resolution may reduce clarity. |
| V-Sync | Off | Epic recommends this to minimize input lag. V-Sync synchronizes FPS with display refresh rate; FreeSync or G-Sync can help prevent tearing when V-Sync is off. |
| Rendering Mode | Performance | Epic’s guide describes this as using DirectX 12 and disabling most rendering features to reduce memory use and CPU/GPU load. It may improve FPS, at the cost of graphical fidelity. |
| Frame Rate Limit | Unlimited, or match your monitor’s refresh rate if tearing occurs | Unlimited removes the in-game cap. Epic warns that manually changing the cap can cause stutter or drops. Its support page lists 360 FPS as the highest selectable cap; verify performance in a match because lobby FPS may be limited to 60 or 120 depending on window and rendering mode. |
| View Distance | Near | Epic says nearby objects are prioritized and players remain visible at this setting. |
| 3D Resolution | Start at 100% | If performance is insufficient, reduce it in 10% steps. This lowers rendered 3D resolution and can make the image less clear. |
| Textures and Meshes | Low | Lower detail can free performance. |
| Show FPS | Enabled | Use the live counter to compare adjustments in like-for-like gameplay, not by comparing a match to the lobby. |
| NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency | On + Boost, for NVIDIA GPU users | Epic recommends this NVIDIA-only setting to reduce GPU latency; it does not apply to non-NVIDIA systems. |
These recommendations come from Epic Games Store’s competitive-settings guide. A higher refresh-rate monitor is a display option, not a guarantee of higher Fortnite FPS.
How to enable Performance Mode
- In Fortnite, open the player icon and select Settings.
- Open the Video tab. Under Display, find Rendering Mode.
- Choose Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity, apply the change, and restart Fortnite.
Epic says enabling Performance Mode may increase FPS for players experiencing low frame rates. It trades graphical fidelity for potential performance gains; the result varies by PC. Follow Epic’s Performance Mode instructions if the current menu labels differ.

Optional: remove High Resolution Textures
If you want to reclaim storage, open the Epic Games Launcher, go to Library, select the three-dot menu on Fortnite, then Options. Uncheck High Resolution Textures and apply. Epic says removing these textures saves over 15 GB; that is a storage figure, not an FPS estimate.
Troubleshoot low FPS and stutter in a useful order
Make one change at a time and test the same kind of gameplay. If several settings change together, it becomes difficult to identify what helped or caused a new problem.
1. Check whether your PC meets Fortnite’s requirements
Epic’s PC requirements page lists these specifications. Requirements can change, so check the current official requirements for the latest information.

| Tier | Graphics | Processor | Memory and storage | Operating system |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon Vega 8 | Core i3-3225 | 8 GB RAM | Windows 10 64-bit |
| Recommended | GTX 960 or AMD R9 280 class, 2 GB VRAM | Core i5-7300U or Ryzen 3 3300U | 16 GB RAM or higher; NVMe SSD | Windows 10/11 64-bit |
| Epic Quality Presets | RTX 3070 or RX 6700 XT class; at least 8 GB VRAM | Core i7-8700 or Ryzen 7 3700X class | 16 GB RAM or higher; NVMe SSD | Not stated on Epic’s requirements page |
Epic cautions that a PC meeting only minimum requirements probably will not run the game at its highest settings. If your system is below the current requirements, graphics tweaks may not be enough to resolve poor performance.
2. Try Performance Mode and reduce demanding details
Use the baseline above, then compare FPS and visual clarity in a match. If needed, lower 3D Resolution in 10% increments rather than making several large changes at once. Epic’s guidance says troubleshooting may improve performance only slightly or not at all.
3. Check Windows GPU and performance settings
On Windows, Epic recommends checking these options. Windows labels and availability can vary by version and device; use the equivalent setting shown on your PC.

4. Update drivers, close background apps, and check cooling
Update your graphics driver and close unnecessary programs that may be using system resources. If FPS gets worse after extended play, check that the PC has adequate airflow and its vents and fans are clear. Epic lists overheating as a possible cause of performance problems that develop over time.
5. Diagnose a cap or a mismatch with your display
If FPS stays at a particular ceiling, check Fortnite’s frame-rate limit and V-Sync, then confirm your display’s refresh-rate setting in Windows. Test in a match: lobby FPS may be capped independently. If changing a manual cap causes stutter or frame drops, restore the prior value. Epic’s FPS adjustment guidance explains the in-game cap and related checks.

6. If a setting will not save or Performance Mode is unavailable
Epic’s low-frame-rate troubleshooting article identifies a read-only GameUserSettings.ini file as one possible reason settings may not save. Check the current support instructions before changing file permissions or editing game files; an older troubleshooting article may not reflect current menu behavior.
What Epic’s FPS examples do—and do not—show
Epic Player Support published two examples comparing low scalability settings with Performance Mode in 720p standard Squads. The publication year is not displayed. These are results from specific older laptops, not predictions for current PCs or a promised improvement:
| Example device | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Intel i5-8265U at 1.60 GHz, 8 GB RAM, Intel UHD Graphics 620 laptop | 24 FPS | 61 FPS |
| AMD A10-5745M APU at 2.1 GHz, 6 GB RAM, Radeon HD 8610G laptop | 18 FPS | 45 FPS |
The figures are Epic’s device-specific examples, not a benchmark of present-day hardware. Epic notes that performance depends on hardware and that troubleshooting may make little or no difference for some players.

When a monitor or other hardware may be the limiting factor
First check whether Fortnite is rendering at a stable frame rate and whether your monitor is set to its intended refresh rate. A 120 Hz, 144 Hz, or higher-refresh gaming monitor may be worth considering if your current display is the constraint, but it does not make the PC render more frames. A display upgrade is optional; it will not fix an underpowered GPU, CPU, or cooling problem.
Epic’s recommendations and hardware context are from its April 30, 2026 guide. For settings and troubleshooting, consult Epic Player Support’s pages on Performance Mode, low frame rate, and FPS limits.
