The fastest reliable workflow is to resize each image to the largest size your layout actually displays, compress it before upload, serve an appropriate format, and reserve lazy loading for images below the fold. Keep the largest above-the-fold image eager, give every image explicit dimensions, then verify the result in PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse with special attention to Largest Contentful Paint (LCP).

Why are my WordPress images slowing my site?
Images often account for most of a page’s transferred bytes. A camera photo or an exported game screenshot can be several times wider than the content column, so the browser downloads data that is discarded during display. Heavy files increase the time before the main visual appears, consume mobile data, and compete with scripts, fonts, and other requests.

Performance tools usually expose two image-related problems. LCP measures when the largest visible element—often a hero image, featured image, or banner—renders. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) rises when the browser does not know an image’s dimensions and content jumps when the file arrives. Optimizing bytes without fixing either delivery priority or dimensions can leave the warning in place.
For a video-game site, the same pattern appears in article headers, screenshots, gallery thumbnails, review-cover art, and author avatars. Treat each use case separately: a 1,440-pixel article hero needs a different source file from a 320-pixel card thumbnail, even when both show the same artwork.
How to optimize images in WordPress: the complete workflow
- Choose a format that suits the image: JPEG or WebP for most photographs and screenshots, and PNG when you must preserve transparency. This is a practical guideline reported by theguidex.com, not a guarantee for every image; inspect the result at its displayed size.
- Resize before upload. Match the largest rendered width in your theme rather than the camera or capture device’s native resolution. Guides commonly suggest roughly 1,200–1,440 pixels for a full-width content image, but measure your own layout.
- Compress the resized file. You can process files manually with TinyPNG or Squoosh.app, or use a WordPress image-compression plugin. A Squoosh guide suggests starting WebP exports near 80% quality, then checking text, foliage, gradients, and fine game UI details for artifacts.
- Know what WordPress handles. WordPress creates intermediate thumbnail sizes and responsive
srcsetchoices, but it does not, by itself, compress your original upload or convert it to another format. - Lazy-load only non-critical images. Let images below the initial viewport load on demand, but keep the likely LCP image eager.
- Set width and height. Explicit dimensions reserve the correct space and enable WordPress’s native lazy-loading behavior.
- Use sensible caching and, where appropriate, a CDN. Static image responses should be cacheable for a long period when filenames are versioned.
- Test after every batch. Run PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse on representative article, archive, and mobile pages. Focus on LCP as well as total image bytes and layout stability.
Choose the right image format
JPEG for photographs and complex screenshots
JPEG is a practical choice for photographic artwork, real-world photos, and screenshots with many colors when transparency is not required. It uses lossy compression, so export quality is a trade-off: too low and text, foliage, or HUD elements develop ringing and blockiness; too high and the file remains unnecessarily large. Compare the compressed file at the size visitors actually see, not only at 100% zoom.

WebP as a general web-delivery option
WebP is commonly used for both photographic and illustrated images. The guides reviewed for this topic suggest WebP exports around 80% quality as a starting point in Squoosh, but there is no single quality value that suits every image. Keep the original master outside the upload workflow so you can re-export if an image is too soft or shows halos.

Use PNG for logos, interface elements, sprites, or artwork that needs an alpha channel and crisp edges. A transparent PNG can be much larger than an equivalent opaque photo, so check whether the same visual can be delivered as a compressed WebP with transparency supported by your chosen workflow.
Do not promise a fixed percentage reduction
Secondary guides variously claim that WebP is 25–35% smaller than JPEG or PNG, and one claims about 30%; those figures conflict and were not independently verified here. The saving depends on the source, dimensions, encoder, and quality setting. Measure your own before-and-after files instead of publishing a guaranteed percentage.
Resize before you upload
Find the widest slot in your theme or block layout. If the content column is 1,280 CSS pixels wide, an image exported at 4,000 pixels is rarely useful for that slot. A common guide-level target is about 1,200–1,440 pixels for a full-width image, but a narrow article column, sidebar card, or gallery tile should use a smaller source.

- Export at the largest width the image can actually occupy, including a reasonable allowance for high-density screens.
- Preserve the intended aspect ratio unless the design deliberately crops it.
- Crop before compression when the crop removes large areas that will never be displayed.
- Keep a high-resolution master separately; the web copy is the delivery asset, not your archive.
Resizing first is important because compression cannot remove pixels that will never be shown. It also makes every later derivative—WebP, JPEG, or thumbnail—smaller and faster to process.
Compress images before uploading
Manual compression
For occasional uploads, resize locally and pass the result through TinyPNG or Squoosh.app. In Squoosh, choose WebP when it suits the image, begin near the guide’s 80% quality suggestion, and inspect fine edges and text. If artifacts are visible in a game screenshot, raise quality or use a different format; if the file is still large, reduce dimensions before pushing quality higher.
WordPress image compression plugin
A plugin is useful when several authors upload files or when an existing media library needs a controlled bulk pass. Names appearing in current WordPress guides include ShortPixel, EWWW Image Optimizer, Imagify, Smush, and Optimole. Their limits, conversion defaults, CDN behavior, and LCP exclusions vary by version and plan, so confirm the settings in the plugin’s current documentation before enabling an automatic rewrite.

Before a bulk run, make a complete site and database backup. Process a small sample first, compare visual quality and file sizes, and confirm that the media URLs used by your theme, RSS feeds, and social previews still resolve. Keep originals until you have verified the new files and know how to restore them.

What WordPress does—and does not—optimize automatically
When you upload an image, WordPress normally creates several intermediate sizes. Themes can request an appropriate candidate through the responsive srcset and sizes attributes, allowing a phone to download a smaller rendition than a desktop monitor. This is delivery resizing, not compression of the original.
WordPress core does not automatically compress your original upload or convert every file to WebP. You still need a pre-upload workflow or a plugin/service for those operations. Check the generated HTML and the Media Library after changing a theme: a theme can request a different size, while a plugin can replace the URL or add its own lazy-loading rules.
WordPress lazy load images without hurting LCP
Let below-the-fold images load lazily
WordPress has added native loading="lazy" to eligible img elements by default since version 5.5. The core behavior applies when the image has width and height attributes. This is appropriate for screenshots in a long review, related-post cards, and gallery items that start below the viewport.
Keep the LCP image eager
Do not lazy-load the hero, featured image, or other image that is visible immediately and is likely to become LCP. web.dev warns that lazy-loading an LCP image delays its discovery and download. If your theme or editor exposes the option, set that image to eager loading and add fetchpriority="high". Use high priority for only the most likely LCP image, or at most one or two images; assigning it broadly reduces the signal’s usefulness.

That warning frequently means a cache, performance, or image plugin has overridden the core decision. Exclude the hero or featured-image selector from the plugin’s lazy-load feature, clear all page and CDN caches, and retest in a private window. If the warning remains, inspect the rendered HTML rather than the editor preview; the browser only sees the final attributes.
A reference guide at corewebvitals.io describes this plugin-override pattern. The exclusion must target the actual LCP element, not every image on the page.

Width and height let the browser calculate an aspect-ratio box before the file arrives. That prevents text and controls from moving when a screenshot or cover image finally renders, reducing layout shift. The attributes also satisfy the conditions WordPress uses for native lazy loading.

Use the image’s intrinsic ratio. A source that is 1,440 by 810 should not be marked up as 1,440 by 900 merely to fit a slot; use CSS for intentional cropping and keep the intrinsic dimensions truthful. If your editor omits dimensions, fix the block, theme template, or optimization setting that removed them rather than adding arbitrary numbers.
Caching and CDN delivery
After bytes and priorities are correct, make repeat visits inexpensive. A guide-level recommendation is to deliver static images through a CDN and use a cache expiration of one year. That long lifetime is safest when filenames change whenever the content changes—WordPress’s generated filenames and query/version strategies can help—so visitors do not receive an old image after an edit.
- Confirm that the CDN serves the same dimensions and format your HTML requests.
- Clear or purge the CDN and page cache after a bulk conversion or URL change.
- Check cache headers on both the original and responsive image URLs.
- Do not let a CDN or cache plugin re-add
loading="lazy"to the LCP image.
The one-year expiration advice is guide-level rather than a universal requirement. If your publishing workflow overwrites files at stable URLs, use a shorter lifetime or reliable cache purging instead of allowing stale artwork to persist.
Test with PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse
- Choose a representative article with a hero image, an article with several screenshots, and a category or home page with cards.
- Run PageSpeed Insights for both mobile and desktop. Record the LCP element, its requested URL, intrinsic dimensions, rendered dimensions, and transfer size.
- Run Lighthouse in a clean session after caches have been warmed and again with a cold cache if you are diagnosing first-view performance.
- Inspect the page source or browser Elements panel. Confirm that the LCP image is eager, has
fetchpriority="high"when appropriate, and includes width and height; confirm that later images use lazy loading. - Compare the downloaded candidate selected by
srcsetwith the CSS display width. A phone receiving a desktop-sized file indicates a theme,sizes, or CDN problem. - After changing one variable—format, dimensions, compression, or loading priority—rerun the same URL and record the result. This prevents a plugin change from hiding the actual cause.
A Google web.dev test of Google Flights reported LCP improving from 2.6 seconds to 1.9 seconds after setting fetch priority. That is a single-site result, not a promise for WordPress pages; use it as evidence that discovery priority can matter when the correct image is known.
Troubleshooting common image-performance failures

A practical checklist for every WordPress image
- Is the file no wider than the largest slot where it will be displayed?
- Is JPEG, WebP, or PNG appropriate for this image’s texture and transparency needs?
- Was it compressed after resizing, with artifacts checked at display size?
- Will WordPress provide an appropriate responsive candidate through
srcset? - Does the final markup include accurate width and height?
- Is it below the fold (lazy) or the likely LCP image (eager)?
- If it is LCP, is
fetchpriority="high"assigned to no more than one or two candidates? - Are cache headers and CDN behavior consistent with your filename and update strategy?
- Did PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse confirm an improvement on the same representative URL?
What a good result looks like
A well-optimized page does not necessarily use the smallest possible file. It delivers a sharp image at the size the layout needs, lets the browser discover the main visual immediately, reserves space for every other image, and defers work that is outside the initial viewport. The workflow is repeatable: resize, compress, inspect the generated responsive markup, protect the LCP image from lazy loading, cache static assets, and measure again after each meaningful change.
