To stop buffering, test the connection where the affected TV, console, or computer is playing video, then work through Wi-Fi signal, competing household traffic, playback settings, and device capability. A fast internet plan alone cannot guarantee smooth playback: congestion can occur between a streaming service and your home, inside your network, or at the device.
Start by identifying what is affected
Check whether the problem occurs in one app, on one device, in one room, or across the household. A single-device or single-room issue points first to that device’s connection, software, or Wi-Fi signal. If several devices become slow at once, look at simultaneous network use, the modem or router, a possible ISP outage, or congestion beyond your home network. Netflix notes that congestion anywhere along the delivery path can affect playback.
Measure the connection at the playback device
Run a speed test on or near the device that buffers, preferably when the problem normally happens. If practical, compare a Wi-Fi test with an Ethernet test. A result measured at the router does not show exactly what reaches a TV in another room. Google cautions that speed-test results vary with the test server’s location, time, congestion, device, and Wi-Fi conditions, so treat a single result as a snapshot rather than a guarantee of performance for every service.
| Provider guidance | Recommended speed or estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix playback | 3 Mbps or higher for 720p HD; 5 Mbps or higher for 1080p Full HD; 15 Mbps or higher for 4K UHD | Netflix’s minimum recommended stable connection speeds for its playback, not universal guarantees. |
| Google household-use estimates | 7 Mbps for one HD video stream; 25 Mbps for multiple HD video streams | Google’s practical estimates for household use; they are not the same measure or context as Netflix’s resolution recommendations. |
These figures come from different providers and contexts; do not average them into a supposed universal requirement. Allow headroom for other people and devices using the connection, and check the guidance for the service you actually watch.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Improve the Wi-Fi path—or test Ethernet
- Move the router and streaming device closer together; if possible, test them in the same room.
- Put the router in an open spot, raised off the floor, rather than behind furniture or inside a cabinet.
- Keep the router away from appliances and other wireless devices that may cause interference. Walls, metal, and distance can also weaken the signal.
- If both the router and playback device have Ethernet ports and you can route a cable safely, test a wired connection. If playback improves, Wi-Fi was likely part of the problem. Ethernet will not fix a slow ISP connection, congestion upstream, or a device that cannot play the target format.
After changing placement or connections, replay the same content and compare behavior at the affected device. This makes it easier to tell whether the change helped.
Reduce competition for bandwidth
Pause large downloads and other high-bandwidth activities while you troubleshoot. Streaming, gaming, video calls, and downloads share the household connection; several simultaneous users can leave less capacity for each. Google recommends reviewing connected-device activity and, where the router supports it, prioritizing a device. Prioritization can manage which traffic gets attention, but it does not add internet capacity.

Check the streaming service, plan, and playback device
- Confirm that your subscription tier includes the quality you want.
- Check that every device in the playback chain supports that resolution, including the TV or display and any console, streaming box, or receiver in between.
- Install current software and firmware for the playback device.
- Review the service’s playback or data-usage setting and make sure it has not been limited. Higher data-use settings may consume more data, which matters if your internet plan has a monthly data cap.
- Allow for adaptive playback: Netflix says video can start below the target resolution and rise after a short time as the stream adjusts to the connection.
If you create live video, check upload capacity too
Watching video mainly uses download capacity; sending a live stream also depends on upload capacity. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says the total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Check upload performance during the time you plan to broadcast, and account for other household activity that may use the same connection.
For playback in a YouTube app or browser, YouTube also recommends keeping the device within Wi-Fi range and minimizing interference. Its troubleshooting guidance includes changing video quality manually when playback is unstable. For live viewing, lower latency can make playback more immediate, but YouTube notes that latency choices involve trade-offs; use the setting that suits your stream and audience rather than assuming the lowest latency is always best.

Restart and escalate if the problem persists
- Restart the modem and router if buffering continues after checking placement and household demand.
- Check whether the ISP reports an outage, especially if multiple devices are affected.
- Contact the ISP if multiple devices remain slow. Give the provider the affected devices, the time of the tests, the results, and whether each test used Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Netflix advises contacting the ISP when a connection falls below its speed guidance.
- If only one device has trouble while other devices work normally, update or troubleshoot that device, or contact its manufacturer.
