Do not describe Twitch subscriptions, Bits or ordinary payments to your channel as charitable donations: those payments support the creator, even if you later give some of the money to the shelter.
Start with the shelter, not the stream schedule
Contact the shelter before you announce a date, fundraising target or donation link. A shelter representative should confirm that it wants to be the beneficiary and approve the exact wording you will use. This prevents a well-intentioned stream from using an outdated name, an unapproved logo or a project the shelter cannot accept.

Agree the beneficiary and purpose in writing
Record the shelter’s legal name, the project the appeal will support, who owns the fundraising page, and which images or logos you may publish. Be specific: “support emergency veterinary treatment” is clearer than “help the shelter.” Ask whether funds may be used for a particular program, location or type of animal.
Specific-purpose appeals can become restricted funds. Before launch, agree a secondary purpose for money left after the target is reached or for a project that becomes impossible. A suitable formulation is: “We are raising funds to buy a modern scanner for our animal rescue centre. If we have donations left after the purchase, or are unable to buy the scanner, we will spend your donations on buying other equipment for our rescue centre.” Adapt the wording to the shelter’s actual plans and obtain approval.

Decide who is responsible for each task
- Shelter: confirms the purpose, approved wording, image permissions, donation destination and use of surplus funds.
- Organizer: schedules and hosts the stream, labels personal revenue accurately, moderates chat and keeps an evidence trail.
- Platform or fundraising service: processes donations, issues receipts where applicable and provides campaign totals under its current terms.
- Sponsors or guest creators: deliver only the payments, promotion or prizes described in a written agreement.
Ask the shelter whether it wants to review promotional posts, appear on stream, receive donor data, or receive only an aggregate total. Do not promise donor information or tax treatment that the shelter or platform cannot provide.
Choose a donation route that sends money to the charity
A charitable donation is made through Twitch’s Charity tool, a charitable fundraising platform such as Tiltify, or the shelter’s own fundraising system. The key test is where the donor’s payment goes and who issues the receipt. A payment to your channel is not converted into a charitable donation merely because you intend to pass it on later.
Option 1: Twitch Charity
If the shelter is listed and eligible, create the campaign in the Twitch Creator Dashboard and use the channel’s Donate to Charity control. Twitch says the Charity tool does not take a cut of donations and that donors receive a PayPal Giving Fund receipt. Twitch’s published FAQ says the tool currently supports charities in the United States and donations in US dollars; participating charities must be enrolled and in good standing with PayPal Giving Fund. Verify the shelter’s listing and the current eligibility rules before you publish the link.
When Charity mode is active, make sure the on-screen button and your verbal call-to-action point to the charity checkout rather than a personal tip page. Test the viewer journey in advance, including the confirmation page and receipt email, without making a test donation you cannot reverse.
Option 2: A recognized fundraising platform
If the shelter is not available in Twitch Charity, ask the shelter which recognized service it supports. Examples to check include Tiltify, JustGiving and Streamlabs Charity. Open the shelter’s verified profile, read the current country, currency, fee, payout and data terms, and confirm that the campaign is connected to the shelter rather than a personal wallet.

Option 3: The shelter’s own fundraising page
A shelter may prefer its existing donation or campaign system. Use the exact page supplied or approved by the shelter, and display the legal beneficiary name and purpose next to the link. This route can be the simplest when the shelter already handles receipts, restricted funds and donor questions.
Compare routes before you commit
| Check | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Is the shelter listed, verified and currently able to receive campaigns in your country? | A listing or profile can be limited by geography, currency or enrollment status. |
| Payment destination | Does the checkout send the donation directly to the shelter or its designated charity processor? | Direct routing avoids confusing charitable gifts with creator income. |
| Receipt and tax treatment | Who issues the receipt, and what does it say about deductibility? | Only the processor or charity can establish the donor’s receipt and tax position. |
| Currency and coverage | Which countries and currencies are supported? | Twitch’s documented Charity tool is currently described as US-charity and USD-only. |
| Controls and reporting | Can you set a goal, show progress, moderate activity and export a final total? | You need enough evidence to report the result accurately. |
| Fees, timing and data | What fees, payout delays and donor-data rules apply? | These vary by service and must be checked in its current terms. |
Save screenshots or downloadable reports of the campaign setup, final total and any receipt or payout confirmation. Keep them with the shelter’s approved plan.
Explain exactly what viewers are paying for
Put the same essential information in the stream title or panels, the donation-page description, chat commands and your opening script. Name the shelter’s legal name, state the approved purpose, provide the direct donation link, and say whether platform or payment costs are deducted. If the service’s terms determine the deduction, link or refer viewers to those terms rather than guessing a percentage.
Separate charity donations from creator revenue
Use precise language for subscriptions, Bits, advertisements, tips and sponsorship income. For example: “Donations made through this charity link go to the shelter through the fundraising service. Twitch subscriptions and Bits support this channel. I will donate 25% of my Twitch payout after the event.” The final sentence describes a personal contribution; it does not imply that a subscriber’s payment is itself a donation.
If you promise a share of your own revenue, define the calculation: identify the revenue period, whether taxes or platform fees are excluded, the currency, the maximum or minimum if any, and the date by which you will send it. Obtain the shelter’s approval for the wording. Do not advertise a tax deduction for viewers unless the charity or processor has confirmed it for their jurisdiction.

Write a usable donation-page description
Your description can follow this order:
- “This campaign benefits [the shelter’s approved legal name].”
- “Funds will support [the agreed project].”
- “If the target is exceeded or the project cannot proceed, remaining funds will be used for [the approved secondary purpose].”
- “Donate through this charity checkout. Payments to the streamer, subscriptions and Bits are creator revenue, not charitable donations.”
- “Receipts and any tax treatment are provided by [the named processor or charity] under its current terms.”
Keep this copy consistent across overlays and social posts. Correct a material error publicly instead of quietly changing a page after donations have started.

Design a stream people can join safely
Choose the game and format
Select an age-appropriate game and check its PEGI rating or the rating system used where your audience lives. Explain the rating and any mature themes in the stream information. A simple format—fixed start and end time, one or two games, a visible target and scheduled breaks—is easier to moderate than an open-ended marathon.
Set milestones that do not pressure viewers into spending: a new game round, a shelter Q&A, a community challenge or a stretch goal funded by the organizer. Avoid mechanics that make a donation a condition of entry into a prize unless you have checked the applicable competition and gaming rules.
Prepare the production checklist
- Schedule the event and publish the time zone, expected duration and direct charity link.
- Place the shelter’s approved name and purpose in the title, panels and starting screen.
- Configure a charity button or command that opens the direct checkout.
- Prepare an offline screen with the same link in case the stream drops.
- Set up a moderator account with the permissions needed to delete messages, time out users and ban abusive accounts.
- Write chat rules covering harassment, hate speech, sexual content, personal information, impersonation and donation scams.
- Provide a private reporting route for abuse and a way to alert you if the donation link is replaced or spoofed.
- Plan hydration, food, restroom breaks, handoffs and an end time. A moderator should be able to pause the stream if you become unwell.
Moderate continuously
The Fundraising Regulator recommends appointing moderators, checking PEGI ratings and putting safety and wellbeing procedures in place. Give moderators a short runbook: remove unsafe links, stop doxxing immediately, do not debate abusive users, record serious incidents and escalate threats through the platform’s reporting tools or local emergency services when necessary.
Never read a donor’s private message, address or payment details aloud. Ask guests to use display names and obtain consent before showing faces, voices or shelter-client information. Animal rescue stories can include distressing images; warn viewers before showing medical content and offer a text-only alternative.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Handle sponsors, affiliates and guest creators as regulated relationships
A business that donates a proportion of sales, an affiliate campaign, or a paid creator promotion can be more than a casual sponsor. The Fundraising Regulator distinguishes volunteers collecting “in aid of” a charity from people fundraising “on behalf of” it, and notes that paid fundraisers, commercial participators, affiliate income and in-game purchases may trigger professional-fundraiser or commercial-participator rules.
Do due diligence before accepting money or promotion
- Verify the business or creator’s identity, contact details and reputation.
- Ask how the promised amount is calculated and when it will be paid.
- Check whether the offer uses sales, affiliate clicks, subscriptions, in-game purchases or a fixed contribution.
- Confirm that advertising, disclosure and age restrictions are suitable for your audience.
- Ask the shelter whether it may use the partner’s name and whether the relationship fits its policies.
Sign a written agreement
The agreement should name the charity, campaign dates, approved claims, payment formula, currency, payment deadline, responsibility for fees, content approvals, data handling, complaints process and records each party must retain. State the shelter’s share in a number or unambiguous formula. Label paid promotions and affiliate links where viewers can see them; do not present a sponsored sales pitch as a pure donation appeal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check laws before adding prizes, raffles or incentives
Prize competitions, raffles, lotteries and paid entry can be regulated differently from ordinary donations. Requirements depend on where the organizer, charity and viewers are located. Canada’s CRA specifically notes that provinces and territories regulate gaming activities. Before adding a prize mechanic, ask the shelter and obtain jurisdiction-specific advice; a game stream cannot make an unlawful lottery lawful.
Also check rules for fundraising communications, commercial participation and incentives. The Fundraising Regulator highlights Gift Aid requirements for qualifying incentives in the United Kingdom. Do not promise Gift Aid or another tax benefit unless the charity confirms that the exact donation method and incentive qualify.

Before going live
- Obtain the shelter’s written approval of the beneficiary, project, fallback purpose, wording and imagery.
- Confirm the donation route, eligibility, currency, receipt process and current platform terms.
- Create the campaign, set a realistic goal and test every visible link.
- Publish the date, duration, game rating, rules, privacy notice and sponsor disclosures.
- Brief moderators and guests on chat enforcement, breaks, safeguarding and escalation.
- Save the approved copy and campaign settings so later edits can be compared.
During the stream
- Open by naming the shelter, purpose, fallback purpose and direct donation route.
- Show the goal and repeat the call-to-action at natural intervals without pressuring viewers.
- Keep creator revenue language separate from charitable-donation language.
- Have the moderator watch chat, links, prize claims and personal-information disclosures.
- Take planned breaks and pause the event if moderation, technical or wellbeing controls fail.
- Record milestones and any changes, such as a game swap or a revised end time.
After the stream
- Close the campaign at the announced time and stop accepting donations under an expired promise.
- Reconcile the platform total, direct receipts and any organizer or sponsor contribution separately.
- Confirm the amount sent or granted to the shelter and the date of transfer.
- Publish a short outcome report: total raised through the charity route, creator contribution, costs if any, and the approved use of surplus funds.
- Explain material variances, refunds or failed payments without exposing donor data.
- Thank donors, moderators, guests and the shelter, then retain records under the shelter’s policies.
Fix common failures without misleading donors
The shelter is missing from Twitch Charity
Do not substitute a personal tip page and call it a charity donation. Ask the shelter whether it is enrolled with PayPal Giving Fund and whether it supports another recognized fundraising platform or its own checkout. Update the campaign copy to match the route you actually use.
A viewer paid the streamer instead of the charity
Explain that the payment is creator revenue, not a charitable donation. If you intend to pass it on, record it as your personal contribution and report the amount separately from direct donations. Do not promise the viewer a charity receipt unless the charity or processor issues one.

The target is exceeded or the project changes
Use the fallback purpose approved before launch. If no fallback was approved, pause promotion and ask the shelter how it can lawfully handle additional or restricted funds; do not invent a new use on stream.
The donation link or chat is attacked
Take the link offline, pin the verified destination through a trusted channel, and ask moderators to remove impersonation posts. Tell viewers not to donate through replacement links until the shelter or platform confirms the correct page.
A sponsor misses its promised payment
Keep the sponsor’s promised amount separate from viewer donations, document the missed deadline and follow the written agreement. Report only money actually received as raised, and tell the shelter about the outstanding commitment.
What a trustworthy closeout looks like
Within the timeframe agreed with the shelter, publish one concise results post and retain the underlying records. State the direct-to-charity total, any separate creator or sponsor contribution, the date funds were transferred or granted, and the approved purpose. If fees, refunds, currency conversion or a failed payment changed the amount, explain the variance in plain language. A clear closeout lets donors see what happened without exposing private receipts or implying that every payment made during the stream was charitable.
