For a predictable 24/7 cartoon stream, keep episodes in a stable folder structure, name them so alphabetical order matches playback order, then load them in OBS’s VLC Video source with Shuffle Playlist off and Loop Playlist on. That organizes playback—but continuity also depends on the computer, media drive, encoder, network, and YouTube ingest staying available. Test the complete setup before relying on it.

1. Organize the files before building the playlist

Use one top-level library folder, a folder per series, and optional season folders. Number episodes consistently so sorting by filename produces the intended sequence. For example:

  • Cartoons/Series Name/Season 01/Series Name - S01E01 - Episode Title.mp4
  • Cartoons/Series Name/Season 01/Series Name - S01E02 - Episode Title.mp4

This is a practical naming system, not an OBS or YouTube requirement. Keep specials, shorts, and interstitials clearly identifiable; decide where they belong in the sequence rather than relying on ambiguous titles. Once you have made the playlist, avoid renaming or moving its files: changing a path can leave a playlist entry unable to find its media.

Check every file and its intended content

Open representative files—and preferably every file in a long playlist—to confirm they play with the expected picture, audio, and subtitles. OBS lists supported local video extensions including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. If you use OBS’s VLC Video source, install VLC; match its architecture to OBS, such as 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. VLC provides extended media support, and the source may not appear in OBS without it. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Include only content intended for this stream. You are responsible for establishing that you have the rights to rebroadcast every cartoon, soundtrack, and other included material; a technically correct playlist does not establish permission.

2. Build an ordered, looping playlist in OBS

For multiple episodes

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed, then open OBS and select the scene that will carry the stream.
  2. In the Sources panel, add a VLC Video source. If it is not available, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
  3. Add the cartoon files in the order you want them to play. Review the list rather than assuming the file browser or playlist will arrange episodes as intended.
  4. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a scheduled episode order. Turn Loop Playlist on so playback restarts when the list runs out.
  5. Play through the beginning and a transition between files. Check for missing media, unexpected audio levels, black gaps, or a file that will not decode.

OBS documents that VLC Video can play multiple files in listed order, with a separate shuffle control and a loop control. Its documentation describes Loop Playlist as restarting the source when it runs out of media files.

For one file

Add an OBS Media Source, select the file, and enable that source’s Loop option. This is the simpler choice when the stream consists of one recording rather than a multi-episode sequence. OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide.

Check what happens when the source is hidden

If your scene changes during operation, inspect the source’s Visibility Behaviour setting. Depending on its configuration, a hidden source can stop, pause, or continue playing. For a 24/7 scene, avoid a scene change or visibility setting that unintentionally stops the cartoon source.

3. Make continuity an end-to-end job

A looping playlist only controls what the media source does when it reaches the end. It does not keep OBS open, protect against a disconnected drive, restore a failed network connection, or ensure YouTube is receiving video. Treat all those pieces as part of the operating setup.

Before going live

  • Keep the media drive connected and the file paths unchanged. Confirm that the machine will not sleep or restart unexpectedly during the planned run.
  • Check that OBS is using the intended scene, source, audio devices, stream key, and YouTube ingest configuration.
  • Do a representative test with moving picture and audio similar to the cartoons you will broadcast. Confirm both local playback and the received YouTube stream.
  • While live, monitor YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages. YouTube recommends testing before a stream and monitoring stream health during it.

These are operating practices, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. The reviewed platform guidance does not prescribe a particular drive, computer, storage capacity, or backup-power arrangement.

Encoder settings and connection

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds for keyframe frequency. Select resolution and bitrate for the output you want and the upload connection you can sustain; there is no single bitrate that suits every resolution and network. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder guidance. Follow the protocol options actually supported by your encoder and the configuration shown for your YouTube stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.

4. Choose the ingest protocol your setup supports

RTMPS for a standard encoder workflow

For a typical creator using an encoder preset, follow YouTube’s stream configuration and the encoder’s supported RTMPS settings. Do not apply HLS-specific segment rules to an RTMP or RTMPS stream.

HLS when implementing HLS ingest

YouTube’s HLS setup guidance requires TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST or PUT requests, and no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous stream. These are HLS ingest requirements, not rules for organizing local cartoon files. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.

The YouTube Live Streaming API HLS guide also documents increasing media sequence numbers, unique segment filenames across encoder restarts, and updating the playlist for each media segment. It describes a separate backup ingest URL for a redundant second copy. That redundancy adds encoder and protocol setup; it is not a promise that viewers will never experience an interruption. These details are chiefly relevant if you or your encoder are implementing HLS rather than selecting a standard encoder preset.

For protocol background, RFC 8216 is the HLS specification. Among other requirements, it describes UTF-8 playlist encoding and identifies playlist files by the .m3u8 or .m3u extension or the appropriate content type. This concerns HLS playlists, not the naming convention for your local cartoon library.

5. Understand broadcasts, streams, and recovery

YouTube distinguishes the audience-facing broadcast from the encoder’s audio/video input, called a stream. That distinction matters if you are arranging a persistent encoder with one or more broadcasts, but creating those resources does not protect playback from a stopped encoder, power loss, or network failure. YouTube explains the distinction in its Live Streaming API guide to broadcasts and streams.

6. Troubleshoot common playlist and continuity failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
VLC Video is missing from OBS VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. Install the matching VLC build, such as 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS, then reopen OBS.
An episode is skipped or fails to play The file may be unsupported, damaged, or no longer at the saved path. Open it separately, confirm its format and playback, then restore the original path or update the playlist entry.
Episodes play in an unexpected order Shuffle is enabled, entries were added in the wrong order, or filenames are ambiguous. Turn off Shuffle Playlist and inspect/reorder the VLC Video list. Use consistent episode numbers for future maintenance.
The playlist stops at the end Loop Playlist is off; for a single-file Media Source, its own Loop option may be off. Enable the loop control on the source type you are using and test the end-to-start transition.
Playback pauses or stops after a scene change Visibility Behaviour may pause or stop the hidden source. Review the VLC source’s Visibility Behaviour and test the actual scene transitions used during the stream.
OBS plays locally but YouTube does not receive a healthy stream The encoder, stream key, protocol settings, or upload connection may be wrong or unstable. Check the YouTube Live Control Room messages and stream health, confirm the configured stream key and protocol, and run a representative test before the next broadcast.
