Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Organize game music around the soundtrack release, not just the game name. Keep the release title and credited release artist in album-level tags, preserve each track’s credited artist and its disc and track numbers, and use folders only as a convenient view of that metadata. This approach lets you browse by game, edition, composer, performer, or original album without losing the sequence that the publisher released.
A reliable workflow is to back up the files, separate different releases, identify the intended edition in MusicBrainz Picard, inspect every proposed match, correct uncertain tracks manually, write a consistent tag set, and then let tags generate stable filenames and folders. The sections below show the fields, naming patterns, checks, and recovery steps needed to make that system hold up as your library grows.

Start with the soundtrack release as the organizing unit
A game can have an original soundtrack, a later expanded edition, a promotional sampler, a vinyl rip, a remaster, or a collection that combines several games. Those are different releases even when many track titles are identical. Treating every file with the game title as its album creates collisions, hides missing or bonus tracks, and makes it impossible to tell which credits and artwork belong to which edition.

Use the release title printed or listed for the specific album as the Album value. If the release is titled Game Name Original Soundtrack, use that full release title rather than shortening it to the game title. If a later release is called Game Name: Complete Soundtrack, give it its own album entry. Add a release year, country, label, or other identifier when the information is known and applies to that edition; do not invent values for fields you cannot verify.

Why this prevents common library errors
- Two editions with different track lists remain separate albums instead of being merged by a player.
- Album artwork and release dates describe the files you actually own.
- Track numbers and disc numbers continue to sort correctly when a release has multiple discs.
- Composer, vocalist, band, and guest credits remain searchable without replacing the release’s own identity.
Tags are the source of truth; folders are a navigation aid
Players read tags even when you move a file to a new drive or change your folder scheme. Folders are still useful for browsing in a file manager, making backups, and locating an album quickly, but they should be generated from stable tags rather than being the only place where information is recorded.
Keep the album-level and track-level concepts distinct. Album artist identifies the act credited for the release as a whole; Artist identifies the credit for an individual track. MusicBrainz’s release guidance says, “In general, you should just enter the artist(s) as shown on the release (see the guidelines for artist credits).” It also says, “Track artists should follow the release artist, except where another artist is credited in the track listing of the release.” Follow those credits instead of putting the game title, a guessed composer, or a personal category in the album-artist field.
If you want game-first browsing, add a separate game, series, or franchise field only when your player can read it consistently. A custom field can hold the game title while the standard album, album-artist, and artist fields retain the semantics that other players understand.
Back up before making batch changes
Make a working copy of the soundtrack folders or confirm that your backup is current before changing tags, filenames, or locations. Automated tagging can touch hundreds of files at once, and a mistaken release selection can write plausible but incorrect metadata. Keep the original copy until you have checked the edited library in your normal player and confirmed that the files open correctly.
For a large collection, work in small groups: one release, one game, or one clearly identified folder at a time. This limits the number of files you must undo if an edition is misidentified.

A repeatable MusicBrainz Picard workflow
MusicBrainz Picard is album-oriented: it identifies a release, assigns files to that release’s tracks, and can save tags while renaming or moving files according to your settings. Its official workflow consists of retrieving album information, matching files to tracks, selecting cover art, and saving the result.
- Add the files or folder. Import one soundtrack release or a tightly related batch. Keep unrelated games and suspected editions in separate working groups.
- Cluster unmatched files. Use Picard’s clustering command to group files that appear to belong together. Clustering is a starting point, not proof that all files came from one release.
- Look up the album. Search MusicBrainz and choose the release whose title, date, country, label, disc count, and track list match your copy. If several results look similar, open each release and compare the complete track listing.
- Use acoustic scanning when metadata is weak. Picard can scan files with AcoustID to suggest matches. A fingerprint can help identify a recording, but it does not by itself prove that the selected edition, disc, or bonus-track status is correct.
- Review the proposed assignment. Picard can guess matches from existing tags and filenames. Compare the original values with the proposed values wherever the confidence is uncertain. Check titles, durations, disc positions, and artist credits rather than accepting a high-level album match blindly.
- Correct assignments manually. Drag a file to the proper track when Picard placed it incorrectly, or leave a file unmatched if it belongs to another release. A manual correction is safer than forcing a near match that will later make the album sequence misleading.
- Confirm release-level metadata. Verify Album, Album Artist, release date, release country or label when available, release type, and the number of discs. A release mismatch can leave individual titles looking reasonable while the album-level data is wrong.
- Confirm track-level metadata. Check Title, Artist, Track Number, and Disc Number for every file. Retain a different track artist when the release credits one; otherwise follow the release artist.
- Select appropriate artwork. Choose the cover associated with the release you selected, not a similarly named game, a later reissue, or a fan-made image that represents a different edition. Treat artwork as a display choice and confirm it before saving.
- Save only after the review. Saving writes the tags and, if configured, renames files and moves them into new directories. Keep the original copy until you have audited the saved result.
What to verify before clicking Save
- The release title is the title of your edition, not merely the game title.
- The release artist and each differing track artist match the credited release.
- Disc count, disc numbers, and track numbers reproduce the physical or official digital sequence.
- Bonus, alternate, remix, and promotional tracks are present in the correct release or kept separate when they came from another source.
- The selected cover art belongs to the same release.
- Uncertain files have been corrected manually or left unmatched rather than forced into an approximate track.
Recommended tag set
| Purpose | Field | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Group files as the released album | Album / release title | Enter the exact soundtrack release title. It may differ from the game title and should distinguish an expanded edition or reissue. |
| Find the release under its credited act | Album Artist | Use the release-level credit as shown on the release. Do not replace it with the game, franchise, or an assumed composer. |
| Find a track by its individual credit | Artist | Use the track-level credit. Keep a different vocalist, band, composer, or guest credit when the track listing names one. |
| Identify the audio item | Title | Retain the listed track title, including meaningful subtitle or version information that distinguishes it from another track. |
| Maintain playback and sort order | Track Number and Disc Number | Populate both for multi-disc releases. Keep the actual sequence instead of relying on filename alphabetic order. |
| Distinguish an edition | Release Date, Country, Label, Release Type, and identifiers | Fill values when the selected release establishes them. Leave unknown values empty rather than guessing. |
| Browse by game or series | Optional custom game, series, or franchise field | Add only if your player reads the field reliably. Never overwrite release-credit fields to achieve game-oriented browsing. |
| Display the release | Embedded cover art | Use artwork for the selected release when available and appropriate. Different editions may legitimately have different covers. |
Tag names are represented differently by different audio formats. Picard’s tag-mapping documentation explains how common concepts such as album artist, track number, and release type map into each format. The visible field name in your player may therefore vary even when the underlying information is the same.
Folder and filename designs that survive moves
Once tags are correct, use a predictable folder template. A simple pattern is:
Music/Soundtracks/<Game or Album Title (release year)>/<disc>-<track> - <title>.<ext>
For collections where editions share a name, include an explicit release detail:
Music/Soundtracks/<Series>/<Game> - <Release Edition>/<disc>-<track> - <title>.<ext>
These are practical templates, not MusicBrainz standards. The important property is that the folder and filename are derived from tags so you can regenerate them after a move. Picard can rename files and place them in directories with a naming script. A filename that begins with disc and track numbers, such as 1-03 - Main Theme.flac, sorts naturally and keeps the sequence visible in a file manager.

Adding the artist to every filename is optional. It can help when files are copied outside a tagged player, but long or inconsistent credits make names unwieldy. Keep the complete credit in tags and add it to filenames only when your filesystem workflow genuinely benefits from it.
Handle multi-disc sets and alternate editions explicitly
Multi-disc releases
Store the disc number and track number as separate values. A filename such as 2-01 - Track Title.ext is a useful visual aid, but the tags are what allow a player to sort and play the album correctly. Do not reset numbering at the folder level without recording the disc; two tracks numbered 01 on different discs would otherwise collide in sorting.
When a release has a continuous sequence across discs, preserve the release’s disc and track values rather than renumbering everything into one artificial list. This keeps the metadata consistent with the credited edition and makes it possible to compare your files with the official track list.
Expanded, remastered, and promotional releases
Keep a later expanded or remastered release separate when its track list, credits, date, or other release details differ. A promotional sampler or bonus disc should not be silently merged into the standard album. If a bonus track was distributed only with a particular edition, place it in that edition’s release entry and retain any version wording that distinguishes it.
Same title, different release
When two releases have the same album title, use release date, country, label, catalog information, or a concise edition label in the folder name. Keep the Album value faithful to the release and use the additional fields to distinguish copies. Do not add an invented suffix to the official album title merely to make folders unique; put the distinction in a release-specific field or the directory template instead.

Preserve credits while making composer and performer searches useful
The album artist field is not a substitute for a game category. Replacing it with the game title makes the release harder to find under its actual credited act and erases useful information. Likewise, replacing every track artist with the presumed composer loses vocalists, ensembles, guest performers, and track-specific credits.
Use the standard fields for the release credits, then add a custom game or franchise field if your player supports one. If your player cannot display custom fields, a consistent genre or grouping value can provide a secondary browse path, but only if it does not overwrite a standard credit field and you understand how that player interprets it. Keep a written convention for capitalization and series names so the same game is not split into several near-identical categories.
Automated lookup versus manual correction
| Approach | Strength | Risk and appropriate use |
|---|---|---|
| Automated album lookup | Fast for well-known releases with complete metadata and an exact database entry. | Can select the wrong country, reissue, or edition when several releases share titles. Review the entire release before saving. |
| AcoustID scanning | Useful when filenames and existing tags are poor and the recording has a recognizable fingerprint. | A recording match does not establish the correct edition or disc placement. Verify release context manually. |
| Existing metadata and filename guesses | Can speed clustering and suggest likely tracks. | Old tags may contain errors or fan conventions. Compare original and proposed values when confidence is low. |
| Manual drag-and-drop assignment | Gives you control over unusual, bonus, or ambiguous tracks. | Takes longer, but is the correct choice when no exact release match exists or automation proposes a near match. |
Use automation to reduce repetitive work, not to remove editorial judgment. The album-oriented nature of Picard means that choosing the wrong release can produce a coherent-looking but incorrect set of tags.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Player compatibility and a migration test
Before reorganizing the entire library, test one release in the player you use most. Confirm that the album appears once, tracks sort by disc and track number, the cover is attached to the intended edition, and searches for the album artist and track artist return the expected files. Test the optional game or franchise field separately; some players ignore custom fields or expose them under a different label.

Troubleshooting common failures
Several releases merge into one album
Check Album, Album Artist, release date, and release identifiers. The files may share an album title but represent different editions. Re-run the lookup for each edition, then regenerate folders with an edition detail so the paths are unique.
Tracks play in alphabetical order
Inspect Track Number and Disc Number tags first. If either is missing, restore the values from the selected release and save again. A numbered filename helps in a file manager, but it cannot replace correct tags in a player that sorts by metadata.
The composer appears as the artist for every track
Compare the release’s album artist and track artist credits. Restore the credited release artist at album level and retain track-specific performers where listed. Put the composer or game name in a separate field only when your player supports the browsing method you want.

Undo or restore from your backup, then select the release with the correct date, country, label, disc count, and track list. Recheck artwork and identifiers before saving. Plausible track titles are not enough evidence that the release is correct.
A file does not match any release
Leave it unmatched rather than forcing it into a similar album. Verify whether it is a bonus track, a rip from another edition, a remix, or a recording absent from the database entry you selected. You can tag it manually with the information printed on your source and place it in a clearly named release folder, while leaving unknown values blank.
Filenames became too long or inconsistent
Simplify the naming script: keep disc-track number and title in the filename, and rely on tags for full credits and release details. Avoid putting every performer, identifier, and descriptive note into a path that may exceed filesystem limits.
Artwork belongs to another version
Remove the incorrect embedded image and select artwork associated with the exact release. If no suitable image is available, leave the artwork absent rather than implying that a different edition is the one you own.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA maintenance routine for a growing collection
- Ingest one release at a time. Put new files in a temporary folder until their edition and source are known.
- Identify the release before renaming. Record enough release detail to distinguish it from similarly named editions.
- Apply the same tag convention. Use the release title, credited album artist, credited track artists, disc number, and track number consistently.
- Regenerate paths from tags. Let your chosen template create folders and filenames instead of hand-editing each path.
- Audit in the player. Check grouping, sorting, artwork, and searches for a sample of recently added albums.
- Keep the backup until the audit passes. Once the player and file manager show the expected result, archive or remove the temporary originals according to your normal backup policy.
This system separates three questions that are often confused: what release is this? (Album and release fields), who is credited? (Album Artist and Artist), and where should I find it? (folders plus optional game or series fields). Answering each question with its own field keeps the library accurate while still making game-oriented browsing fast.
