How to Pair a Bluetooth Controller with an Android Phone for Steam Gaming

By VGSources Team 14 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pairing a Bluetooth controller to an Android phone takes two separate setups: first connect the controller in Android’s Bluetooth settings, then configure Steam Link to stream games from a computer running Steam. Bluetooth pairing alone does not install Steam Link or connect your phone to the host PC.

Put the controller into its model-specific pairing mode, open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device, select the controller, and confirm it appears as connected. Then open Steam Link, make sure Steam is running on the host computer, and connect both devices to the same network.

What you need before pairing

Prepare these items before opening the settings menu:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • An Android phone with Bluetooth enabled.
  • A Bluetooth-capable game controller and its model-specific pairing instructions.
  • A computer with Steam installed and running if you intend to stream Steam games.
  • The Steam Link Android app installed on the phone for remote play.
  • The phone and host computer connected to the same network for Steam Link.

Valve says the Android Steam Link app supports Android 5.0 and newer. That is the app’s stated platform threshold; individual controller support can have a different Android requirement. For example, Valve lists Sony DualShock 4 support on Android 9.0 and higher.

  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

The documented workflow does not require a phone clamp, cable, adapter, replacement part, repair tool, or separate gaming subscription. Those items may be useful for other setups, but they are not prerequisites for pairing a Bluetooth controller and using Steam Link from an Android phone.

Android’s menus can differ by phone manufacturer and Android version. The labels in this guide follow Google’s documented path, but your device may place Bluetooth under a slightly different heading or use labels such as Pair new device, Available devices, Saved devices, Unpair, or Forget.

Step 1: Put the controller into pairing mode

Start with the controller, not the phone. Every model can use a different button sequence, indicator light, or menu command to enter Bluetooth discovery mode. Follow the manual for your exact model and wait until it indicates that it is ready to pair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy a pairing shortcut from another controller. A sequence documented for one product may do nothing on another, and the discontinued 2015 Steam Controller has its own Bluetooth Low Energy procedure and firmware requirements. If the controller is not discoverable, return it to pairing mode before searching from Android.

How to tell whether pairing mode worked

  • The controller’s status light or on-screen indicator shows a discovery or pairing state, according to its manual.
  • The controller is not already connected to another nearby device that is taking over the Bluetooth connection.
  • The controller remains close enough to the phone for the initial discovery process.

These checks only establish that the controller is advertising itself. They do not yet create the Android connection. A controller can be powered on without being discoverable, so do not treat a normal power light as proof that Android can find it.

If the manual describes separate wireless modes, choose the Bluetooth mode intended for mobile devices. Do not assume that a controller’s wired, proprietary wireless, or USB receiver mode will appear in Android’s Bluetooth list. The phone can only pair through the wireless method the controller actually exposes.

Step 2: Pair the controller in Android

  1. Open Settings on the Android phone.
  2. Open Connected devices.
  3. Tap Pair new device. On some phones, open the Bluetooth page first and choose the option to pair or scan for available devices.
  4. Wait for the controller’s name to appear in the available-device list.
  5. Tap the controller’s name to pair it. If Android displays a confirmation prompt or code, approve it as directed.

Google’s Android controller guidance instructs users to select the controller’s name from the list of available Bluetooth devices. Keep the controller in pairing mode until the phone completes the process; leaving that mode too early can make the device disappear from the list.

Once pairing completes, Android normally retains the relationship as a saved Bluetooth device. That lets you reconnect later without repeating the first pairing procedure, provided the controller is powered on and available. The phone may show a connected status while the controller is active and a saved or previously connected status when it is not currently linked.

If the controller name does not appear

  1. Check the controller manual and repeat its exact pairing-mode procedure.
  2. Turn Bluetooth off and on again in Android, then return to Pair new device.
  3. Move the controller close to the phone and ensure it is not actively connected to another device.
  4. Search again while the controller’s pairing indicator is still active.
  5. If the phone lists several similar names, use the exact model name from the controller’s documentation rather than guessing.

Android’s documented workflow does not provide one universal controller button combination. The correct pairing command must come from the controller’s own documentation. If the controller drops out of discovery mode quickly, begin the Android scan immediately after activating pairing mode.

Step 3: Confirm, reconnect, or forget the controller

After pairing, return to Settings > Connected devices and check the controller’s status. Android distinguishes between a device that is currently connected and one that is saved for later use.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Reconnect a previously paired controller

If the controller appears under saved or previously connected devices but is not active, select it and choose the available connect option. You normally do not need to repeat the initial pairing process for a saved device. Turn the controller on first, and if its manual requires a reconnect or Bluetooth mode, perform that step before selecting it in Android.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A saved entry is useful evidence that the phone has seen the controller before, but it is not the same as an active connection. Confirm that Android reports it as connected before moving on to Steam Link.

Start over with Forget

If Android saved an incorrect or incomplete connection, open the controller’s entry in Bluetooth settings and choose Forget (the wording may be Unpair on some versions). Then place the controller back into pairing mode and use Pair new device again.

Forgetting removes the phone’s saved relationship with that controller. It does not configure Steam Link, change the controller’s firmware, or remove the controller from other devices. If another phone or computer is still connected to it, disconnect that device before trying the new pairing.

Step 4: Set up Steam Link for Steam games

A paired controller can operate in Android without Steam Link. To play a Steam game streamed from your computer, complete the second setup in the Steam Link app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn on the computer that hosts your Steam library.
  2. Start Steam on that computer and leave it running.
  3. Connect the Android phone and the host computer to the same network. Valve’s Steam Link guidance specifically instructs users to ensure the phone is on the same network as the host PC.
  4. Open the Steam Link Android app.
  5. Follow Steam Link’s on-screen setup to discover and select the host computer.
  6. When Steam Link reports that the host is ready, launch a game and test the controller input.

The Bluetooth link covers the short connection between the phone and controller. Steam Link separately establishes the streaming session between the phone and the computer. A successful Bluetooth pairing therefore does not prove that the host PC is reachable or that a game will accept the controller.

What the same-network requirement means

The phone and host computer must be connected to the same network for the documented Steam Link setup. If Steam Link cannot find the computer, verify the network connection on both devices, confirm Steam is running on the host, and repeat the app’s discovery process. Pairing the controller again will not fix a host-discovery problem.

Check the network on both screens rather than assuming that a working internet connection is enough. The requirement concerns the phone’s connection to the same network as the host computer. Steam Link’s on-screen setup remains the authority for selecting and connecting to that host.

Test in stages

Test the setup in this order: first verify that Android shows the controller as connected, then verify that Steam Link discovers the host, and finally test input inside a game. This order narrows the failure point. If the controller fails before Steam Link opens, focus on Bluetooth pairing. If Steam Link cannot find the host, focus on Steam and the shared network. If one game ignores input while the rest of the setup works, inspect compatibility and control mapping.

Controller compatibility in Steam Link for Android

Valve publishes a list of input devices supported by the Android Steam Link app, while also noting that other devices may work without being officially supported. Use the exact model name, not merely the brand family, when checking compatibility.

Controller or category Valve’s Android Steam Link status Android-version condition What to verify
Steam Controller Listed as a supported input device No separate Android threshold stated in the cited list Use the controller’s own pairing procedure and firmware guidance
Microsoft Xbox One S Controller Listed as a supported input device No separate Android threshold stated in the cited list Confirm your exact model supports Bluetooth pairing with Android
Sony DualShock 4 Listed for Android Steam Link Android 9.0 and higher Check the phone’s Android version before troubleshooting the app
Other Bluetooth controllers May work, but are not confirmed by Valve’s listed support entries Not stated Check the controller manual, Android connection, and game behavior

“Not listed” is not the same as “incompatible.” It means Valve’s support page does not give the same official confirmation for that model. A controller can appear connected in Android yet still fail to provide usable input in a particular Steam game.

Compatibility has several layers: the controller must offer a Bluetooth mode that Android can pair with; Android must recognize the connected device; Steam Link must accept its input; and the individual game must respond to that input. Passing one layer does not guarantee the next.

Choosing between controllers

If you have several controllers, compare them in this order:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Whether Valve lists the exact model for Steam Link on Android.
  2. Any Android-version requirement attached to that listing, such as Android 9.0 or newer for DualShock 4.
  3. Whether the controller manual documents Bluetooth pairing with Android.
  4. Whether its button labels and layout match the controls shown by the game.

The Microsoft Xbox One S Bluetooth controller is a defensible choice to investigate because Valve names the Xbox One S Controller among supported Steam Link input devices. That support entry does not establish current stock, a particular retail listing, price, affiliate availability, or that every similarly named Xbox controller is the same model. Verify the exact product and its Android Bluetooth capability before buying.

Likewise, a controller’s brand reputation is not a substitute for the exact support entry. Compare the model number, the manual’s wireless instructions, the phone’s Android version, and the layout you expect to use in games.

Adjust button and joystick assignments on Android

Android provides controller settings after a gamepad is connected. Depending on the phone and Android version, you may be able to swap button assignments or change joystick mappings.

  1. Connect the controller in Settings > Connected devices.
  2. Open the phone’s game-controller or connected-device settings.
  3. Select the controller and look for button or joystick assignment options.
  4. Apply the new mapping, then return to Steam Link and test the controls in a game.

Use remapping when the controller is recognized but a game’s expected layout does not match the physical labels. If Android does not expose remapping controls, the available options depend on the phone’s Android version and manufacturer interface. Do not assume that every Android phone offers the same remapping screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make one mapping change at a time and test it in the streamed game. If the controller is not connected at the Android level, remapping cannot make Steam Link receive input; establish the Bluetooth connection first.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The controller never appears in Android’s available-device list

  • Repeat the exact pairing-mode instructions for that controller model.
  • Make sure the controller is actively discoverable when you tap Pair new device.
  • Check that it is not still connected to another nearby device.
  • Toggle Bluetooth and search again.
  • Move it close to the phone during discovery.
  • If the controller was saved previously, open its saved entry and try connecting; if that fails, choose Forget and pair it again.

Do not start by changing Steam Link settings when Android cannot see the controller. The failure is occurring before the app can receive controller input.

Android says it is connected, but Steam Link does not respond

  • Confirm that the controller is shown as connected, rather than merely saved.
  • Open Steam Link and complete its host-computer setup.
  • Verify that Steam is running on the host PC.
  • Ensure the phone and host PC are on the same network.
  • Check Valve’s listed support status and Android-version condition for your exact controller model.

These checks separate a Bluetooth problem from a Steam Link or host-computer problem. Re-pairing cannot substitute for starting Steam on the host or completing Steam Link’s on-screen setup.

The controller works in Android but not in one Steam game

First confirm that Steam Link recognizes the controller outside the individual game. Then check whether the model is officially listed by Valve or is an unconfirmed device that merely connects to Android. If the controller is connected but the game shows the wrong controls, use Android’s available button or joystick remapping settings and retest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not conclude that the phone’s Bluetooth radio failed simply because one title ignores input. A game-specific issue can occur after Android and Steam Link have both accepted the controller. Compare behavior in another streamed title or in Steam Link’s own input checks before changing the pairing.

The controller disconnects after it was paired earlier

Open Android’s saved Bluetooth devices and select the controller to reconnect it. If the saved entry cannot connect, use Forget, return the controller to its model-specific pairing mode, and complete the pairing sequence again.

Also check whether the controller has automatically reconnected to another nearby device. A saved relationship on the phone does not prevent another device from claiming the controller first.

You are using the 2015 Steam Controller

Do not apply generic Xbox or PlayStation pairing instructions. Valve’s support material for the discontinued 2015 Steam Controller describes Bluetooth Low Energy support that depends on firmware and uses a controller-specific pairing procedure. Follow that generation’s Valve instructions and firmware notes before attempting Android pairing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This model-specific warning matters because a controller can be Bluetooth-capable but still require a particular firmware state or pairing sequence. Treat the 2015 Steam Controller as its own case rather than as a template for newer controllers.

Questions to answer before buying a controller

Is any Bluetooth controller guaranteed to work?

No. Valve distinguishes listed input devices from other devices that may work without official support. Check the exact model, its Android pairing instructions, and the phone’s Android version instead of relying only on the word “Bluetooth” on a product page.

Does pairing require an additional adapter?

Not for the Bluetooth workflow described here. The phone pairs directly with a controller that supports the required Bluetooth mode. An adapter is not part of the documented Android and Steam Link setup.

Do I need a separate Steam Link subscription?

The setup described uses the Steam Link Android app to stream from a computer running Steam. The documented steps do not call for a separate streaming subscription or a third-party service recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use the controller without a computer?

Bluetooth pairing lets Android recognize the controller, but the Steam gaming path in this guide depends on Steam Link streaming from a host computer running Steam. Pairing alone does not create that host connection.

A complete setup checklist

  • The controller manual’s pairing mode has been followed for the exact model.
  • Android shows the controller under Connected devices.
  • The controller is connected, not only listed as a saved device.
  • The phone meets the Steam Link app’s Android requirement of Android 5.0 or newer.
  • Steam is running on the host computer.
  • The phone and host computer share the same network.
  • Steam Link’s setup has discovered and selected the host PC.
  • The controller’s Valve support status and Android-version requirement have been checked.
  • Android remapping options have been applied if the game’s controls do not match the controller.

What pairing does—and does not—do

Pairing creates a Bluetooth relationship between the controller and Android phone and lets Android retain the controller as a saved device. It does not install Steam Link, start Steam on a computer, discover a host PC, or guarantee that every Steam game accepts the controller. Those are separate stages of the Steam Link setup.

Once all stages are complete, the practical sequence is straightforward: wake the controller, reconnect it from Android if necessary, open Steam Link, select the running host PC, and start the game. If something fails, identify which stage failed—controller discovery, Android connection, host discovery, or in-game input—then apply the troubleshooting branch for that stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I pair a Bluetooth controller with an Android phone?

Put the exact controller model into Bluetooth pairing mode using its manual. On Android, open Settings, choose Connected devices, tap Pair new device, and select the controller from the available-device list. Keep it in pairing mode until Android confirms the connection.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my controller not appear under Pair new device?

Repeat the model-specific pairing procedure, make sure the controller is not connected to another nearby device, move it close to the phone, toggle Bluetooth, and scan again. If Android saved it previously, try reconnecting from the saved-device list or choose Forget and pair it again.

Does Bluetooth pairing automatically connect Steam Link?

No. Pairing connects the controller to Android only. You must also install and open Steam Link, have Steam running on the host computer, and connect the phone and host PC to the same network.

Which Android version does Steam Link require?

Valve lists Android 5.0 and newer for the Steam Link Android app. Controller-specific requirements can be higher; Valve lists DualShock 4 support on Android 9.0 and higher.

Which controllers are officially supported by Steam Link on Android?

Valve lists the Steam Controller and Microsoft Xbox One S Controller, and lists Sony DualShock 4 support on Android 9.0 and higher. Other controllers may work, but they are not confirmed by those listed support entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I remap buttons after pairing?

Android may provide game-controller settings that let you swap button or joystick assignments. Availability and menu labels vary by Android version and manufacturer. Connect the controller first, change the mapping, and test it in Steam Link.

What should I do if a saved controller will not reconnect?

Open the saved Bluetooth device entry and choose the connect option. If that fails, choose Forget or Unpair, put the controller into its exact pairing mode again, and complete Pair new device from the start.

How should I pair the discontinued 2015 Steam Controller?

Use Valve’s generation-specific Bluetooth Low Energy instructions and firmware notes. Do not apply generic Xbox or PlayStation button combinations, because this Steam Controller has its own pairing procedure and firmware conditions.

The Bottom Line

Pair the controller in Android first, then treat Steam Link as a separate setup: Steam must be running on the host PC, the phone and PC must share a network, and the exact controller model should be checked against Valve’s support list and Android-version notes. If a problem occurs, identify whether it is controller discovery, Android pairing, host discovery, or in-game input before troubleshooting.
