You can pair a compatible Bluetooth headset with a PS3 from Settings → Accessory Settings → Manage Bluetooth Devices. Pairing registers the headset; you must then choose it separately under Audio Device Settings for microphone input and, if supported, audio output. Bluetooth alone does not guarantee compatibility or full game audio.
Check compatibility and get ready
Sony’s PS3 guide provides a Bluetooth registration process, but that does not mean every Bluetooth headset will work. The headset must support a Bluetooth audio profile and implementation the PS3 can use; Sony cautions that compatibility is not guaranteed for every Bluetooth device (Sony PS3 Wireless Headset manual).

Before starting, have these ready:
- A powered-on PS3 and a charged headset.
- The headset’s instructions for entering pairing or discovery mode, plus its passkey if it uses one.
- The headset close to the console. Temporarily disconnect it from a phone, PC, or other console so it does not reconnect elsewhere during setup.
Headsets made only for modern phones, devices that require proprietary wireless dongles, and newer PlayStation Link products are not automatically PS3-compatible. Check the specific model’s documentation before buying or troubleshooting it as a PS3 Bluetooth device. Sony’s current headset guidance covers newer wireless products and does not make all of them compatible with PS3 (PlayStation headset pairing support).
Put the headset into pairing mode
Follow the headset maker’s instructions; the button sequence differs by model. Simply turning a headset on may not make it discoverable. Some models require holding the power or pairing button until an indicator flashes, or clearing a previous connection first.
#1 Best Overall
- Bluethooth 2.0 Technology
- Charges through a USB connection
- Noise reducing microphone
- Easy to adjust volume control
- Mini USB Cable included
For one model-specific example, Sony’s original PS3 Wireless Headset entered discovery mode when its power and microphone indicators flashed alternately. Its manual specifies passkey 0000 for that headset only—not as a universal PS3 code (Sony PS3 Wireless Headset instructions).
Register the headset on the PS3
- From the PS3 home menu, open Settings.
- Select Accessory Settings, then Manage Bluetooth Devices.
- Choose Register New Device. If asked to register a device, select Yes.
- Select Start Scanning while the headset is in pairing mode.
- Choose the headset from the results.
- If the PS3 requests a passkey, enter the code in the headset’s instructions. Some devices do not require one.
- Wait for registration to finish.
These are the English menu labels in Sony’s PS3 User’s Guide; wording or presentation can differ with system language, region, or firmware-era interface (PS3 Bluetooth settings).
Choose the headset for chat and audio
Registration alone does not select the headset for use. Open Settings → Accessory Settings → Audio Device Settings:
- Set Input Device to the headset to use its microphone.
- Set Output Device to the headset if it appears as an available choice and you want audio routed there.
- Adjust Microphone Level while speaking and check whether the PS3’s level indicator responds.
- If you hear echo or feedback, use Set Echo Canceler where available; Sony also documents a restore option.
The PS3 manages input and output separately (PS3 Audio Device Settings). Voice chat is the more reliable expectation: whether a particular headset receives game audio, and what kind of audio it receives, depends on the headset and configuration. Pairing is not proof that all game sound will play wirelessly.

Confirm what is working
Bluetooth setup has three distinct stages: paired means the PS3 has registered the headset; connected means it has an active link; configured means the PS3 has selected it for input or output. Check the relevant stage rather than treating a successful scan as a completed setup:
- Is the headset listed in Manage Bluetooth Devices?
- Is it connected, rather than only registered?
- Is it selected as the Input Device, and does the microphone level react when you speak?
- Can another player hear you in a game or chat environment that supports voice chat?
- Is sound coming from the output device you selected?
Troubleshoot common problems
The PS3 cannot find the headset
- Turn the headset off, then put it into pairing mode again—not merely normal powered-on mode.
- Disconnect it from nearby phones, tablets, PCs, and other consoles; temporarily switching off their Bluetooth can help isolate the connection.
- Charge the headset and move it close to the PS3.
- Retry Start Scanning before the headset’s discovery mode times out.
- If it is already registered, select it from the device list and use the Triangle-button options to connect.
- If the console cannot add another device, remove unused registered wireless devices. Sony’s guide recommends deleting unused devices when the registration limit prevents adding one.
If it still does not appear, the headset’s Bluetooth profile or implementation may not be supported by the PS3; a failed scan by itself does not prove the headset is broken.
The PS3 asks for a passkey
Use the code in the headset’s manual. Some devices need no code. 0000 is documented for Sony’s original PS3 Wireless Headset, but should not be assumed for another model.
It pairs, but the microphone does not work
- Confirm the headset is actively connected and selected as Input Device.
- Check the headset’s mute switch or microphone controls, then raise Microphone Level enough for the meter to respond.
- Make sure the selected input is not another previously registered device.
- Test in a game or chat service that supports voice chat; pairing cannot enable voice features the software does not offer.
There is no sound in the headset
Check whether the headset is available and selected under Output Device. If it is not offered there, or game sound still does not route as expected, the particular headset or PS3 audio configuration may not support that use. You can keep game audio on the TV or receiver while using a compatible headset for chat; that is a split-audio setup, not proof that all sound is going to the headset.

The connection drops, or there is echo
For a previously registered headset, open Audio Device Settings, choose the relevant Input Device or Output Device menu, and use the Triangle-button options to reconnect. For echo or feedback, lower the microphone level, check the headset’s mute and connection state, and try Set Echo Canceler or Restore Echo Canceler in Audio Device Settings.
The headset keeps connecting to a phone
Disconnect or temporarily disable Bluetooth on the phone, put the headset back into pairing mode, and scan from the PS3. Once PS3 pairing is complete, reconnect the phone if the headset supports the desired device-sharing behavior.

If the headset is unsupported, use a model explicitly documented as compatible with PS3 rather than choosing by the word “Bluetooth” or “USB” alone. A compatible USB headset may avoid Bluetooth discovery and passkey problems, but USB connection by itself does not guarantee PS3 voice-chat support.
A documented PS3-era Sony headset is another option for readers who want the clearest first-party pairing example. These older accessories may be discontinued or sold used, and their battery condition can vary. Check the exact model’s compatibility documentation before purchasing. Do not assume a newer PlayStation wireless headset will work through the PS3 Bluetooth menu: newer models may depend on a USB adapter or PlayStation Link rather than ordinary Bluetooth registration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can any Bluetooth headset connect to a PS3?
No. The headset must support a Bluetooth audio profile and implementation the PS3 can use; Bluetooth pairing is not a compatibility guarantee.
Is the PS3 Bluetooth headset PIN always 0000?
No. Use the headset’s own instructions. 0000 is documented for Sony’s original PS3 Wireless Headset only.
Will a Bluetooth headset play all PS3 game audio?
Not necessarily. The PS3 configures input and output separately, and audio behavior depends on the headset and setup. Voice chat is the safer expectation.
How do I reconnect a previously paired headset?
Select the device from the relevant Input Device or Output Device menu in Audio Device Settings, then use the Triangle-button options to connect.
