Turn on your PS4, connect the DUALSHOCK 4 to the console with a USB cable, then press the controller’s PS button. When the controller pairs and has enough battery, disconnect the cable to use it wirelessly.
How do I pair a new controller to my PS4?
- Turn on the PS4 console.
- Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 controller to the console with a USB cable. Sony describes this as the included USB cable.
- If the controller is off, press its PS button. The light bar blinks during pairing; once connected, the player indicator lights up.
- After pairing, disconnect the cable when the controller has enough battery. It can then be used wirelessly.
Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 support instructions and controller instruction manual document USB as the setup method for first use or when connecting the controller to another PS4.
What if I’m moving the controller from another PS4?
A DUALSHOCK 4 is paired with one console at a time. To use it with a different PS4, connect it to that console by USB and repeat the pairing steps. Sony says one PS4 can connect up to four DUALSHOCK 4 controllers.
Why won’t my PS4 controller connect?
Reset the controller, then reconnect it over USB:
- Turn off the PS4 and unplug its power cable.
- Disconnect the controller’s USB cable.
- Find the small reset hole on the back of the controller. Use an unfolded paper clip or similar tool to press and hold the reset button for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect the controller to a USB port on the front or rear of the PS4.
- Press the PS button.

Check the USB cable
The documented console-pairing process requires a USB connection. If the original cable is missing or damaged, use a USB data cable compatible with your specific DUALSHOCK 4 revision; a cable that only supplies power may not complete pairing. Check the controller model before choosing a replacement, since connector details can vary by revision.
Is pairing to a PS4 the same as pairing to a phone or other device?
No. For the normal PS4 setup, connect the controller to the console by USB and press PS. Sony’s Bluetooth instructions for supported external devices are a separate process: turn off the player indicator, disconnect USB, hold SHARE and PS until the light bar flashes, then select the controller from the device’s Bluetooth list. Those steps are for an external device, not the standard first-time PS4 pairing procedure. See Sony’s controller support guidance.
