To pair a physical Wii Remote with Dolphin, set a Wii Remote slot to Real Wii Remote, select Refresh, then press 1 + 2 on the remote at the same time. A -TR model uses its Sync button instead. Do not pair the remote through your computer’s Bluetooth settings.
Pair a Wii Remote with Dolphin
- Open Dolphin’s controller configuration and find the Wii Remote slot you want to use. Set that slot to Real Wii Remote.
- In the Wii Remote configuration area, select Refresh.
- Press 1 + 2 together on the Wii Remote. If you have a -TR model, press its Sync button instead.
Dolphin should find the remote and connect it to the selected slot. The menu names above are from Dolphin’s controller configuration guide.
Connect without selecting Refresh each time
Enable Continuous Scanning in the Wii Remote configuration area. With a game running or the Wii Remote configuration window open, press 1 + 2 or the remote’s Sync button to connect.
If Dolphin does not detect the remote
- Check that your computer has Bluetooth support.
- Confirm that the slot is set to Real Wii Remote and is not already claimed by another remote.
- Turn off nearby Wii or Wii U consoles while pairing.
- Do not pair the remote through the computer’s native Bluetooth settings. Dolphin warns that the operating system may interfere with Dolphin’s connection.
If a game later acts as though the remote disconnected after being idle, Dolphin may still show it as connected. Reconnect it through Tools → Connect Wii Remotes → Connect Wii Remote #, use the corresponding hotkey, or press a button on the remote.

Dolphin does not automatically turn off Wii Remotes except on Linux. To switch the remote off yourself, hold its power button.

Bluetooth passthrough is not a required first step; try the standard Real Wii Remote connection first. Passthrough is an option if you specifically need its direct hardware mode and have a compatible adapter.

Using a Wii Remote in netplay
Dolphin’s netplay guide does not support the Real Wii Remote option in netplay. A physical remote can be connected for use as an emulated controller, but configure it as an emulated Wii Remote rather than selecting Real Wii Remote.
