Pair each Joy-Con separately through Windows, then use Steam Input or a controller mapper if you want two Joy-Cons to behave like one conventional Xbox-style gamepad. Bluetooth pairing alone does not guarantee that every PC game will recognize them.
This guide covers original Switch Joy-Cons. Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 controllers may require different software or connection methods; do not assume they work identically. See reWASD’s supported-device documentation for its separate compatibility information.

Before you start
- One or two charged, original Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons.
- A Windows PC with Bluetooth, or a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter.
- Steam Input, BetterJoy, or reWASD if the game does not recognize the Joy-Cons directly.
Microsoft says a USB Bluetooth adapter can add Bluetooth capability to a PC without built-in Bluetooth. Keep the Joy-Con close to the Bluetooth receiver during setup. If your desktop has an external antenna, connect and position it before pairing.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFirst decide how you want to use the controllers:
- One Joy-Con: It can work as a small horizontal controller, although its limited controls suit only some games.
- Two separate Joy-Cons: Windows generally treats them as two independent Bluetooth devices.
- One combined controller: You need compatible Steam Input configuration or third-party software such as BetterJoy or reWASD.
Pairing is only the first stage. There is a difference between:
#1 Best Overall
- Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
- Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
- Bluetooth pairing: Windows establishes the wireless connection.
- Operating-system recognition: Windows lists the controller as an input device.
- Game compatibility: The game accepts and correctly maps the controller input.
How to pair a Joy-Con with Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on.
- Select Devices, then Add device.
- Choose Bluetooth.
- On the Joy-Con, press and hold the small SYNC button on its top edge until the player LEDs begin cycling. BetterJoy’s PC instructions recommend holding it for approximately five seconds; the LEDs are the practical indication that it is discoverable.
- When the Joy-Con appears in Windows’ device list, select it.
- Wait for Windows to confirm the connection.
Nintendo identifies the SYNC button as the controller-pairing control in its Joy-Con pairing instructions. After a successful connection, the player LEDs should settle into a connected state.
Pair the second Joy-Con
Repeat the process independently for the other controller:
- Put the second Joy-Con into pairing mode by holding its SYNC button until the LEDs cycle.
- Return to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Devices → Add device → Bluetooth.
- Select the second Joy-Con when it appears.
Do not expect Windows to add both controllers as a single device. Direct Bluetooth pairing normally produces two separate input devices. Pairing two Joy-Cons does not automatically create the equivalent of a left and right half of a standard Xbox controller.

Windows 10 legacy instructions
On Windows 10, the traditional path is Start → Settings → Devices → Bluetooth & other devices → Add Bluetooth or other device → Bluetooth. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so Windows 11 is the current supported path in 2026. The Windows 10 steps are included only for systems that still use that operating system.
Test whether Windows sees the Joy-Cons
Pairing confirmation is useful, but testing the inputs tells you whether Windows is receiving button and stick data.
- Open Windows Search.
- Type
joy.cpl. - Open Set up USB game controllers.
- Look for the Joy-Con or any virtual controller created by your mapping software.
- Select it, choose Properties, and press buttons or move the stick.
This confirms that Windows is receiving input. It does not prove that a particular game will support the device or map every control correctly.
Use Joy-Cons with Steam
Steam Input may be enough for some games, especially if you are happy to create a custom layout. Steam’s labels and menu arrangement can change, so look for controller settings globally in Steam or for the game’s controller-configuration interface.
- Open Steam and check its controller settings.
- Confirm that Steam detects the paired Joy-Con or Joy-Cons.
- Open the game’s controller configuration.
- Choose a suitable template or assign buttons manually.
- Test the layout before starting a long game session.
Steam may detect two Joy-Cons as two separate controllers rather than one complete gamepad. If a game needs two sticks and a conventional Xbox-style layout, Steam Input may not combine the devices in the way you need. In that case, use a virtual-controller solution such as BetterJoy or reWASD.
Steam support is not the same as native game support. A game can work through Steam Input while still requiring a custom layout, and a non-Steam game will usually need its own support or a mapper that outputs a format the game understands.
Make two Joy-Cons act as one controller with BetterJoy
BetterJoy is a community-maintained project that can expose Joy-Cons as generic XInput controllers for system-wide PC use. XInput is the controller format expected by many Windows games.
- Download BetterJoy only from its official GitHub repository, not from an unfamiliar mirror.
- Read the current README and release instructions.
- Install any driver component required by the current release.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Launch BetterJoy.
- Pair both Joy-Cons through Windows Bluetooth settings.
- Wait for BetterJoy to detect both controllers.
- Choose or configure the desired combined or separate-controller behavior.
- Test the resulting controller with
joy.cpland then in the game.
BetterJoy’s documentation describes virtual XInput output and support for using Joy-Con input system-wide, including with Steam. Its required drivers and setup details can change, so follow the current repository instructions rather than installing an old driver version from a third-party guide.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
BetterJoy is not an official Nintendo or Microsoft product. It is a practical free software route, but it may require more troubleshooting than simply pairing a normal PC gamepad.

Use reWASD for grouping and advanced profiles
reWASD is an optional commercial remapping tool. Its Joy-Con guide describes grouping the left and right controllers into one virtual controller, remapping controls, and creating per-game profiles.
Choose reWASD if you want a graphical configuration tool, detailed remapping, or profiles for different games. It is not required for Bluetooth pairing and is unnecessary if Steam Input or BetterJoy already meets your needs. Current pricing and licensing can change, so check the official purchase page before buying.
reWASD is not automatically better for latency, gyro, rumble, or compatibility with every game. Those features depend on the output mode, the game, and the connection method.
Button labels may not match the game
Joy-Con button labels follow Nintendo’s layout, while many PC games are designed around Xbox-style prompts. A game may therefore show Xbox prompts even when you are using Joy-Cons through an XInput mapper.
| What you see | What can happen |
|---|---|
| Physical A/B or X/Y labels | The labels may not correspond to the button prompts shown by the game. |
| Xbox prompts in the game | This usually indicates that the mapper is presenting the Joy-Con as an XInput controller. |
| Unexpected actions | Remap the buttons in Steam Input, BetterJoy, reWASD, or the game’s own settings. |
Motion controls, rumble, NFC, and other features
Do not assume that every Switch feature works on Windows. Support varies between direct Bluetooth, Steam Input, BetterJoy, reWASD, dedicated adapters, and individual games or emulators.
BetterJoy documents gyro and motion-related functionality for supported software, but that does not make motion input universal. The 8BitDo USB Wireless Adapter 2 Windows Joy-Con manual specifically lists motion control, NFC scanning, the IR camera, HD rumble, notification LEDs, and player-indicator LEDs as unsupported in its Windows Joy-Con mode.

Hardware alternative: 8BitDo USB Wireless Adapter 2
An adapter can provide a hardware-based connection route when your PC lacks suitable Bluetooth or when you prefer not to use the computer’s internal wireless hardware. 8BitDo lists Switch Joy-Con and Windows compatibility for its USB Wireless Adapter 2.
However, its Windows Joy-Con manual gives this setup a major limitation: only one Joy-Con can be connected, and it is used horizontally as a single controller. The manual also excludes motion control, NFC, the IR camera, HD rumble, notification LEDs, and player-indicator LEDs.
- Plug the adapter into the Windows PC.
- Press the adapter’s pairing button until its LED blinks.
- Hold the Joy-Con’s SYNC button for about three seconds.
- Wait for the adapter LED to become solid.
This makes the adapter a poor choice if your main goal is combining both Joy-Cons into a full two-stick PC controller. It may suit someone who wants to use one Joy-Con or add a hardware pairing method without relying on built-in Bluetooth.
Troubleshooting
The Joy-Con does not appear in Windows
- Check Bluetooth: Enable it in Windows and verify that the PC has working Bluetooth hardware. Add a compatible USB adapter if necessary.
- Enter pairing mode again: Hold the SYNC button until the LEDs cycle.
- Disconnect the Switch: Move the console away or temporarily disable its Bluetooth so the Joy-Con does not reconnect there during setup.
- Charge the controller: A depleted battery can prevent reliable discovery.
- Reduce interference: Move the Bluetooth antenna or dongle away from USB 3 devices, metal obstructions, and the back of a crowded desktop.
Windows says it is paired, but it is disconnected
Press a button on the Joy-Con to wake it. If it still will not reconnect, remove it from Windows’ saved Bluetooth devices and pair it again. Close Steam, BetterJoy, reWASD, and other controller utilities before changing the pairing because multiple tools can compete for the same device.
Only one Joy-Con works
- Pair the second Joy-Con separately in Windows.
- Confirm that both appear in Bluetooth settings or
joy.cpl. - Restart Steam or the mapper after both are connected.
- If using BetterJoy, wait until both devices are detected before creating a combined output.
- If using the 8BitDo Adapter 2, check its manual: one Joy-Con in Windows is an intentional limitation.
The game detects no controller
- Test the device with
joy.cpl. - Enable or configure Steam Input for the game.
- For non-Steam games, use BetterJoy or another mapper that outputs XInput.
- Launch the mapper before the game if the game scans for controllers only at startup.
- Do not run multiple virtual-controller tools at the same time.
The game sees two controllers instead of one
This is expected when two Joy-Cons are paired directly. Try Steam Input, BetterJoy, or reWASD if you need one combined virtual controller.

There is lag or the connection drops
Possible causes include a weak Bluetooth adapter, interference, poor antenna placement, outdated drivers, low battery, multiple remapping layers, or the game’s own input handling. Try moving a USB Bluetooth dongle to a short extension cable, positioning an external antenna in the open, updating motherboard or Bluetooth drivers, disconnecting unused Bluetooth devices, and testing direct Bluetooth against a dedicated adapter.
There is no single reliable latency figure for every PC, adapter, controller, and software path, so avoid treating one setup’s performance as universal.
Which connection method should you use?
| Your goal | Best starting point |
|---|---|
| Simply connect one or two Joy-Cons | Windows Bluetooth. |
| Play a Steam game with a custom layout | Steam Input first. |
| Use both Joy-Cons as one Xbox-style controller | BetterJoy or reWASD. |
| Use one Joy-Con through hardware | An adapter such as the 8BitDo USB Wireless Adapter 2, while accepting its feature limitations. |
| Get the least complicated PC-game experience | A conventional XInput USB or wireless controller may be a better fit. |
Joy-Cons are a good option when you already own them and want a compact wireless controller. They are less convenient when you need universal two-stick compatibility, predictable button prompts, or complete Switch features. Pairing them successfully is straightforward; making every PC game understand two separate Joy-Cons is the part that may require additional software.
