To put one password in front of every part of a WordPress site, use a site-wide password plugin or protect the site’s directory with server-level authentication. WordPress’s normal “Password Protected” setting applies to individual posts and pages; it is not a complete site lock. A plugin is the practical choice when you want a dashboard workflow. Apache Basic Authentication is broader and runs before WordPress, but it requires hosting access and careful HTTPS configuration.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Whichever method you choose, keep HTTPS enabled, test in a logged-out private window, purge caches, and preserve an SFTP or SSH recovery path before turning on the lock.

A whole-site gate challenges a visitor before the visitor can browse the home page, a deep page, a media URL, a feed, or another resource beneath the protected directory. The visitor normally sees one login prompt and then receives a browser session or cookie that prevents repeated prompts until it expires or is cleared.
That is different from WordPress’s built-in visibility control. In the editor, an author can mark a post or page as Public, Private, or Password Protected. Those settings protect selected content, while the rest of the site remains reachable unless it is separately restricted. WordPress documentation says that making an entire blog private and password protected requires a plugin.

Use a site-wide gate for a site under construction, a private game-community portal, a client review environment, a closed beta or an internal documentation site. It is an access barrier, not a replacement for updates, backups, secure accounts or general WordPress hardening.
Choose the right protection layer
| Method | What it covers | Where it is configured | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Site-wide password plugin | WordPress pages, posts, categories, products, custom post types and, depending on settings, partial content | WordPress dashboard | Owners who want a manageable one-password gate without editing server files | It depends on WordPress loading and can lock you out if recovery access is not prepared |
| Apache Basic Authentication | Requests under the protected directory, including WordPress pages, login URLs and static files | Apache configuration, usually .htaccess and an .htpasswd file |
Administrators who control the hosting layer and want protection before WordPress runs | Requires server access, host-specific paths and careful syntax; a bad rule can make the directory inaccessible |
| Per-post or per-page WordPress passwords | Only the posts or pages explicitly marked Password Protected | Each post or page’s editor settings | A small number of private articles or pages | Unsuitable when every URL must be gated |
Apache Basic Authentication credentials are only weakly Base64-encoded. Base64 is not encryption, so use HTTPS for the public hostname and the administrative path. A plugin still needs HTTPS because the password and session travel through the browser, even though the check happens inside WordPress.

The WordPress.org listing for Password Protected — Lock Entire Site, Pages, Posts, Categories, and Partial Content describes a single master password for an entire site. Its listed controls include exclusions, IP-address whitelisting, bypass links, password expiration or usage limits and login-attempt limits. The listing also describes protection for individual pages and posts, WooCommerce products and categories, custom post types and selected portions of content.
Prepare a recovery route first
Before activation, confirm that you can reach the hosting account and that SFTP or SSH credentials work. Write down the plugin directory location and the host’s file-manager or rollback procedure. The plugin documentation says that if its password screen also blocks the administrator, disabling the plugin may require removing or renaming its folder over SFTP or SSH. Do this preparation while you can still reach the dashboard.
Install and activate it
- Sign in to WordPress and open Plugins → Add New.
- Search for Password Protected — Lock Entire Site, Pages, Posts, Categories, and Partial Content. Confirm that the listing and author match the plugin you intend to use.
- Select Install Now, then Activate.
- Open the plugin’s settings from the new settings entry or from the plugin list. WordPress displays the exact menu location supplied by the plugin version you installed.
Turn on complete-site protection
- Enable the setting that protects the complete site, not merely selected posts or pages.
- Create a strong, unique password. Do not reuse an administrator password or a password used for a game account, email account or hosting panel.
- Decide whether logged-in administrators should bypass the gate. A bypass is convenient for editors, but it means an administrator session can view the site without entering the visitor password.
- Review exclusions before saving. You may need to exclude a health-check endpoint, a verification file or a deliberately public landing page. Every exclusion is a route around the lock, so keep the list short and document it.
- If you use IP whitelisting, add only stable office, studio or VPN addresses. Home and mobile addresses can change, and a whitelisted address will not test the visitor experience.
- Save the settings, then open a private or incognito browser window and visit the public hostname while logged out.
Use the plugin’s visitor controls deliberately
A single master password is simplest for a small team. Bypass links can let a reviewer enter without typing the password, but treat each link as a credential: send it privately, set an expiration or usage limit when available and revoke it when the review ends. Password expiration and usage limits are useful for temporary playtests or client approvals; they are not a substitute for changing a password that has been shared too widely. Login-attempt limits can slow guessing, but they do not remove the need for HTTPS and strong credentials.

Understand the plugin boundary
A plugin gate is implemented by WordPress. If WordPress is disabled, fails to load or serves a cached response before the plugin runs, the gate may not behave as expected. Static files, feeds, API responses and files served directly by the web server should therefore be included in your test plan. A page cache or CDN can also retain an earlier public response; purge those caches after enabling the lock.

Method 2: protect the directory with Apache Basic Authentication
Apache Basic Authentication runs at the web-server layer. The server requests credentials before handing a request to WordPress, so the check can cover WordPress pages, /wp-login.php, images, JavaScript, uploads and other static files beneath the protected directory. This is the most independent option, but it is appropriate only when you control or can edit the hosting configuration.
Confirm that Apache and overrides are available
Ask the host whether the site uses Apache and whether .htaccess overrides are enabled for the document root. Managed hosts may restrict both. If the stack is nginx, use the host’s server-block authentication mechanism instead; nginx does not process .htaccess. IIS uses web.config. Do not paste Apache directives into a different server stack.
Create a password file outside the public web root
Apache reads usernames and password hashes from an .htpasswd file. Put that file outside the directory that visitors can request, if your host allows it. The host may provide a control-panel button for creating it. On a shell account with the Apache utility installed, a typical command is:
htpasswd -c /path/outside/public/webroot/.htpasswd reviewer
The -c option creates a new file; do not use it again when adding another user because it can overwrite the existing file. Your host may use a different path or command, so follow its documented location and permissions.

Add the authentication rules safely
Place custom directives in the document-root .htaccess file, above or below the managed WordPress section, but never inside the # BEGIN WordPress and # END WordPress block. WordPress can regenerate that managed section and overwrite changes placed there.
AuthType Basic
AuthName "Restricted site"
AuthUserFile /path/outside/public/webroot/.htpasswd
Require valid-user
Replace the AuthUserFile path with the absolute path supplied by your host. Save a backup of the original file before editing. A syntax error can return a server error or make the directory inaccessible; use the host’s file manager, rollback feature or SFTP to restore the backup if that happens.
Verify the server-level result
- Open a private browser window and request the home page. The browser should display an HTTP Basic Authentication prompt before the page loads.
- Enter a valid username and password, then open a deep page, an image, an upload URL and
/wp-login.php. They should remain behind the same prompt. - Test an invalid password and confirm that the server rejects it without revealing the page.
- Repeat the test from a second network or device that is not on an IP allowlist.
- Confirm that HTTPS is active and that HTTP redirects to HTTPS before credentials are sent.
Basic Authentication credentials are encoded with Base64, which can be decoded by anyone who captures the connection. TLS encryption from HTTPS is therefore mandatory. Do not treat the browser prompt itself as evidence that the connection is secure.
Method 3: use WordPress’s built-in visibility settings
For an individual post or page, open the editor’s Visibility control, choose Password Protected, enter a password and publish or update. WordPress stores the entered password in a browser cookie so a reader does not have to re-enter it for every visit. WordPress tracks one password at a time for protected content in this workflow, so it is not a multi-user access system.
This approach is useful for a private announcement, a review page or a small set of articles. It becomes awkward when every URL must be protected: you must configure each item, and unprotected pages, archives, feeds, media and other endpoints can remain public.

Keep protected posts out of archives when necessary
Password-protected posts can still appear in home-page or archive queries unless you change the query behavior. WordPress documents a custom pre_get_posts and posts_where approach for excluding protected posts from those lists. That requires theme or plugin development and should be tested after WordPress or theme updates. It does not turn per-post passwords into a server-wide gate.
Test every route after enabling protection
A successful prompt on the home page is not enough. Use a logged-out private window, because an administrator cookie or a previously authenticated Basic Authentication session can hide mistakes.
| Test | Expected result | If it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Home page | Password prompt or plugin gate appears before public content | Check whether an administrator bypass, exclusion or cached response is active |
| Deep page and category archive | Same gate appears; no content leaks through navigation | Review plugin scope or server directory coverage |
| Media URL and uploaded file | File is protected when the whole directory is meant to be private | Server-level protection may be required; purge CDN and page caches |
| Feed and REST/API endpoint | Behavior matches your deliberate policy, rather than exposing post content unintentionally | Check plugin exclusions, API authentication and cache rules |
/wp-login.php and /wp-admin/ |
Administrative paths are not accidentally public or unusable | Confirm whether the chosen method should challenge these paths and keep a recovery route |
| Second device and network | Results do not depend on a stale cookie or IP allowlist | Clear cookies, disable bypasses and test without the trusted network |
Flush caches and check the CDN
Page caches and CDNs can serve an old public HTML response after a plugin gate is enabled. Purge the site cache, the CDN cache and any host-level cache, then retest from a second network. Do not cache the authenticated response as public content. If the site uses a reverse proxy, ask the host how it handles cookies and HTTP Basic Authentication before enabling a long-lived cache rule.
HTTPS, accounts and backups still matter
A password gate controls who reaches the site; it does not secure WordPress by itself. Keep HTTPS enabled for both the public hostname and the administrative path. Use unique administrator credentials, least-privilege roles for editors, current WordPress and plugin versions, reliable backups and a tested restore process. The gate should not be used to justify leaving vulnerable software exposed behind a shared password.
For a game site, separate the visitor password from credentials for the hosting panel, source-control system, database, analytics account and community platform. If several people need access, a plugin’s single master password is convenient but makes offboarding dependent on changing that shared secret. Apache Basic Authentication can support multiple entries in an .htpasswd file, but account administration remains a hosting task.

Recover safely if the lock blocks you
Plugin lockout
Use SFTP or SSH to reach the WordPress installation, locate the plugin directory and rename or remove the password-protection plugin folder so WordPress deactivates it. The exact directory name depends on the installed plugin. Restore the folder only after correcting the setting, then test with a private window. If you do not have SFTP or SSH, use the host’s file manager or support-assisted rollback before activating a site-wide plugin.
Apache configuration error
Use the host’s file manager, deployment rollback or SFTP to restore the backed-up .htaccess. If the host provides an error-log viewer, inspect it for the line and directive that caused the failure. Do not repeatedly edit a live file without retaining a known-good copy. Once the site responds again, validate the .htpasswd path, directive spelling and HTTPS redirect in a staging or maintenance window.

Lost password
A plugin’s recovery process depends on its implementation; an Apache password can be replaced by editing the password file. Keep the recovery credentials in an approved password manager rather than in a theme file, a public ticket or a game-community chat.
Which method should you use?
Choose a plugin when
- You want to enable or disable the gate from Plugins and a settings screen.
- You need exclusions, bypass links, IP whitelisting or temporary password limits.
- You do not have permission to edit Apache, nginx or IIS configuration.
- You can preserve SFTP, SSH or file-manager access in case the dashboard becomes unreachable.
Choose Apache Basic Authentication when
- You control an Apache document root and need files and WordPress endpoints blocked before WordPress runs.
- You are comfortable maintaining
.htaccess, an.htpasswdfile and host-specific absolute paths. - You can enforce HTTPS and have a tested rollback path for syntax errors.
Choose per-page passwords when
- Only a few posts or pages need protection.
- You accept that other URLs may remain public.
- You do not need one consistent gate for media, feeds, API responses and the login path.
For most nontechnical site owners building a private WordPress site, start with the site-wide plugin and test every route before inviting anyone. For a technically managed site where the entire directory must be denied independently of WordPress, use Apache Basic Authentication or the equivalent control for your actual server stack. In both cases, HTTPS and a recovery path are non-negotiable.
