Use Xbox Offline System Update (OSU1) when your console cannot finish its normal network update. On a Windows PC, format a USB flash drive as NTFS, download the current OSU1 package from Xbox Support, place its $SystemUpdate folder in the drive’s root, then start the console in Startup Troubleshooter and select Offline system update. The documented minimum is a 6 GB USB drive.
When an Xbox offline update is the right fix
An offline system update installs Xbox system software from a USB drive instead of downloading it through the console. It is intended for an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S that cannot complete the normal online update because it cannot reach the update service, repeatedly fails during installation, or remains in a recovery screen.

If the console still reaches the dashboard and has a working internet connection, try the standard update first. On the Xbox, open Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates & downloads > Update console. An offline update is a recovery procedure, so using the normal path avoids unnecessary USB preparation when the online service is available.

What you need before starting
- A Windows PC with internet access and a USB port. The official package is downloaded and prepared on the PC.
- A USB flash drive with at least 6 GB of capacity. An 8 GB or larger drive gives you practical headroom while still meeting the documented minimum.
- NTFS formatting. The Xbox offline updater expects the drive to use NTFS rather than exFAT or FAT32.
- The current OSU1 ZIP from Xbox Support. Check the official support page immediately before use because package contents can change.
- A backup of anything stored on the USB drive. Formatting deletes every existing file on that drive.
The 6 GB figure is a minimum capacity requirement, not a promise that every drive marketed as 6 GB will provide exactly that usable space. If Windows reports insufficient room, use a larger drive and format it again.
Prepare the OSU1 USB drive on Windows
1. Back up the drive and format it as NTFS
- Connect the USB flash drive to the Windows PC and copy any files you want to keep to another location.
- Open File Explorer, select This PC, right-click the USB drive, and choose Format.
- Set File system to NTFS. Leave the allocation-size setting at its default unless Windows requires a different value.
- Choose Start, acknowledge the warning that formatting erases the drive, and wait for Windows to finish.
Formatting only the USB drive is required. Do not format the Xbox’s internal storage as part of this procedure.
2. Download and extract OSU1
- From the official Xbox Support offline-update page, download the current OSU1 ZIP archive to the PC.
- When the download completes, use Windows’ extraction command (right-click the ZIP and choose Extract All) or another trusted archive utility.
- Open the extracted contents and locate the folder named exactly
$SystemUpdate. The dollar sign and capitalization are part of the name.
If the archive will not open, reports an error, or extracts without the expected folder, delete it and download OSU1 again from Xbox Support. An incomplete archive cannot produce a usable update drive.

3. Put the folder at the USB root
- Open the USB drive in File Explorer. Its root is the first window shown for the drive, not a folder inside it.
- Copy the entire
$SystemUpdatefolder directly into that root. - Do not put it inside another directory, rename it, or copy only the files inside it.
- Remove unrelated files and folders from the USB drive. The cleanest layout contains
$SystemUpdateat the top level and nothing else. - Use Safely Remove Hardware in Windows before unplugging the drive.
Microsoft’s guidance describes this operation as copying the $SystemUpdate file from the ZIP to the flash drive; in practice, preserve the extracted folder and its contents exactly as supplied.
Open Xbox Startup Troubleshooter
The console must be fully powered off before you enter the troubleshooter. The button combination varies by model because some consoles do not have an Eject button.
| Console family | Controls to hold | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | Pair/Bind and Eject | Hold both controls while pressing the Xbox power button. Continue holding until you hear the second startup tone. |
| Xbox Series S | Pair/Bind only | Because there is no Eject button, hold Pair/Bind while pressing the Xbox power button, then release after the second startup tone. |
| Xbox One X | Pair/Bind and Eject | Hold both controls while pressing the Xbox power button and wait for the second startup tone. |
| Xbox One S | Pair/Bind and Eject | Use both controls and keep holding through the second startup tone. |
| Xbox One S All-Digital Edition | Pair/Bind only | This model has no Eject button. Hold Pair/Bind while pressing power until the second startup tone. |
| Original Xbox One | Pair/Bind and Eject | Hold both controls while pressing the Xbox power button; release after the second startup tone. |
The Pair button may be labeled Bind on some hardware. If the console starts normally instead of opening Startup Troubleshooter, power it off completely and repeat the sequence, keeping the controls held until the second tone rather than releasing at the first sound.

Run the offline system update
- With the console off, insert the prepared USB drive into a USB port.
- Open Startup Troubleshooter using the model-specific controls above.
- On the troubleshooter screen, select Offline system update.
- Follow the prompts shown on the screen. The console reads the
$SystemUpdatepackage from the USB drive and may restart during installation. - Do not remove the USB drive or interrupt power while the update is being applied unless an on-screen instruction specifically tells you to do so.
If Offline system update is unavailable or cannot be selected, the console may not be recognizing the drive. Turn the console off, remove the USB, and check the filesystem, folder location, and package contents before trying again.
Confirm the installed system version
After the console restarts and returns to the dashboard, remove the USB drive only when it is no longer needed. Open Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info. The console-info screen displays the installed system version, allowing you to confirm that the update completed.
If the console goes back to Startup Troubleshooter, record the complete error code shown on screen before changing anything. The exact code determines whether the next step is another USB preparation attempt, storage recovery, or formal support.

Troubleshoot a failed or stuck OSU1 update
The console does not detect the USB drive
- Verify that Windows reports the drive’s filesystem as NTFS, not FAT32 or exFAT.
- Open the drive root and confirm the folder is named exactly
$SystemUpdate. - Check that the folder is not nested in a second folder created during extraction.
- Remove other files and folders, then safely eject and reconnect the drive.
- Try a freshly formatted USB drive if the first drive continues to be ignored.
The update starts but fails
Write down the complete error code before restarting. Redownload OSU1 from Xbox Support, extract the new archive again, and copy the new $SystemUpdate folder to a freshly formatted NTFS drive. Reusing a damaged download or a partially copied folder can reproduce the same failure.
The console remains in Startup Troubleshooter
Do not guess at a fix from a shortened code. Use the official Xbox system-update error-code and Startup Error troubleshooting guidance for the full code displayed by the console. If the documented recovery steps do not resolve it, contact Microsoft Support with the console model, the full code, and what happened immediately before the failure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStorage-related errors appear
A storage-related code can indicate a problem beyond the USB package, such as an issue with the console’s internal storage. Follow the official Xbox recovery instructions for that code rather than repeatedly forcing OSU1. Repeated failed writes can waste time and may obscure the original diagnostic information.

An Insider console rejects OSU1
A public OSU1 archive may be older than the build installed through an Insider channel. Check the console’s channel status and the current official guidance before attempting another package. Do not treat a rejected public package as proof that the USB drive is defective.
Choosing the correct recovery path
| Situation | Best first action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Console reaches the dashboard and has internet access | Use Settings > System > Updates & downloads > Update console | The normal updater can select the service-compatible package without USB preparation. |
| Console cannot complete an online update but opens Startup Troubleshooter | Prepare NTFS USB media with the current OSU1 and choose Offline system update | The package bypasses the console’s network download step. |
| USB is not recognized | Recheck NTFS, the exact folder name, and root placement; then retry with a freshly formatted drive | These are the required media conditions. |
| Full error code indicates storage or startup failure | Use the matching official recovery guidance and escalate to Microsoft Support if it remains unresolved | The code may identify an internal hardware or storage issue that OSU1 cannot repair. |
| Console uses a newer Insider build | Confirm the update channel and supported package before retrying | A public OSU1 build can be incompatible with a newer test build. |
Safety and practical checks
- Back up USB contents before formatting; the format operation is destructive.
- Download OSU1 immediately before use and verify that it came from the official Xbox Support page.
- Keep the folder name and location unchanged; a similarly named folder or nested copy will not work.
- Record every error code and the console model before repeating a recovery attempt.
- Do not claim success based only on a restart. Confirm the version under Console info.
Microsoft-hosted guidance specifies a minimum 6 GB NTFS flash drive. No independent source establishes a guaranteed completion time, success rate, or performance difference between larger USB drives, so choose a reliable drive for compatibility rather than expecting a measurable speed advantage.
