A command such as echo never > /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/enabled changes a live system, but it is not a complete permanent configuration. Verify both the boot command line and the effective sysfs policy after every change, and inspect additional per-size and shmem controls on kernels that expose them.

What permanently disabling THP actually means
Transparent Huge Pages let the Linux memory-management subsystem use larger pages without requiring applications to request them explicitly. The policy is exposed through files under /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage. The top-level enabled file normally shows policy choices such as always, madvise and never; the current choice appears in square brackets.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A permanent setting must be applied when the kernel starts, before ordinary userspace services and applications begin allocating memory. The upstream Linux administrator documentation identifies the kernel parameter transparent_hugepage=never as the boot-time way to change the default for the top-level enabled control. A write to a sysfs file happens later, after boot, and is therefore a runtime change rather than a durable boot policy.
This distinction matters on a gaming machine, workstation or server that is rebooted for kernel updates, troubleshooting or maintenance. A runtime write disappears on the next boot unless another startup mechanism repeats it. Even a script that writes every visible control can run too late, miss a newly exposed control, or lose a race with an earlier service. The boot parameter is the authoritative starting policy.

Check the current configuration before editing it
Record the existing command line and every THP control your kernel presents. Run these commands as an ordinary user; reading the files does not require root:
cat /proc/cmdline
cat /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/enabled
cat /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/defrag 2>/dev/null || true
find /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage -path '*/hugepages-*/enabled' -o -name shmem_enabled 2>/dev/null
Interpret the output
/proc/cmdlineis the command line received by the running kernel. Save its original contents before changing a bootloader entry.enabledlists the available policy values. The value in square brackets is the active policy for that control.defrag, when present, reports the defragmentation policy. It is related to THP allocation behavior but is not a substitute for changing the enable policy.- The
findcommand discovers size-specific anonymous controls andshmem_enabledcontrols without assuming that every kernel has the same directory layout.
Do not infer that a missing path means an error. Kernel versions and build options expose different controls. Conversely, do not assume that changing the top-level file covers every allocation class when the inspection command finds additional files.
Why an echo never command is not permanent
This common test changes the policy of the running kernel:
echo never > /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/enabled
It is useful for a temporary mitigation or for observing how a workload behaves with the current policy disabled. It normally requires root privileges, for example through a root shell or an appropriate privilege-elevation method. The value is not stored in the bootloader configuration, so a reboot restores the kernel’s boot-time default unless the command line was also changed.
There is a second limitation. The kernel documentation explicitly warns that setting never in all sysfs THP controls does not disable Transparent Huge Pages globally. Newer kernels can have separate controls for different anonymous page sizes and for file-backed or tmpfs/shmem allocations. A top-level runtime write can therefore be both temporary and incomplete. Treat it as an experiment, not as the permanent system-wide method.

Use the kernel boot parameter for a durable policy
GRUB-based distributions
On a distribution that boots through GRUB, add transparent_hugepage=never to the distribution’s existing kernel-command-line variable, commonly maintained in /etc/default/grub. Preserve every unrelated argument already present. Do not replace the entire line with a shortened example: options for storage, security, graphics, virtualization or resume may be required by that installation.
- Open the distribution’s GRUB defaults file with administrative privileges.
- Locate the variable that supplies the Linux kernel command line, such as the existing default command-line setting.
- Append one space followed by
transparent_hugepage=neverinside that variable’s quoted value. If the parameter is already present with another value, change that value rather than adding conflicting copies. - Save the file, then run the bootloader-configuration generator supported by that distribution. The generator and output location differ between distributions; use the local administrator documentation instead of assuming a command from another GRUB layout.
- Reboot. Editing the defaults file alone does not affect the kernel that is already running.
A successful generator run is not proof that the next boot used the edited entry. Firmware boot order, multiple GRUB installations, snapshots and custom boot entries can all select a different configuration. Verification from the running system is mandatory.
RHEL 8 with grubby
Red Hat documents a persistent kernel-argument method for RHEL 8. Run:
sudo grubby --args="transparent_hugepage=never" --update-kernel=DEFAULT
This updates the entry identified as DEFAULT through the distribution’s supported tool. Keep a record of the original command line first, and inspect the command’s output and the resulting configuration according to your RHEL boot setup. If your system is not RHEL 8, do not assume that grubby, its arguments or the DEFAULT selector are available.
Other bootloaders and managed images
The parameter itself is kernel-level; the way it is installed is bootloader-specific. Systems using another boot manager, an image generator or a vendor-managed kernel need that platform’s supported kernel-argument mechanism. The safe rule is unchanged: add the argument without deleting existing ones, reboot, and prove that the live kernel received it.

Reboot so the policy applies from early boot
Schedule a reboot when the machine can be taken offline. A boot parameter is preferable to a later service because it establishes the policy before early userspace processes allocate memory. This is particularly important when the reason for disabling THP is to avoid a policy being active during initialization rather than merely changing it after services have started.
Warn interactive users and stop workloads normally before rebooting. If the machine is remote, keep a tested console or out-of-band recovery path available in case a bootloader edit prevents a normal boot. The THP argument itself is normally a policy change, not a request for a different kernel image, but preserving a recovery path is prudent whenever boot configuration is edited.
Verify both the command line and the active policy
After the reboot, run:
cat /proc/cmdline
cat /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/enabled
cat /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/defrag 2>/dev/null || true
Verification has two independent parts:
- Kernel receipt:
/proc/cmdlinemust containtransparent_hugepage=never. If it does not, the selected boot entry did not include the argument, regardless of what was written in a configuration file. - Effective policy: the active value in square brackets in
enabledshould beneverwhere that control exists.
Run the discovery command again if you require strict coverage of all THP allocation classes:
find /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage -path '*/hugepages-*/enabled' -o -name shmem_enabled 2>/dev/null
Read each returned file and note its bracketed policy or available values. A top-level never result does not by itself document the state of every per-size anonymous or shmem control on a multi-size kernel.
Understand newer multi-size THP controls
Anonymous page sizes
Current kernels may expose more than one anonymous THP size, with files whose paths contain hugepages-*/enabled. The kernel also supports a thp_anon= boot parameter for setting policy per supported anonymous size. When thp_anon= is specified, anonymous sizes that are not explicitly configured are implicitly set to never.

This gives administrators a more granular policy than the single top-level setting. It also creates a verification obligation: inspect the size-specific files on the actual kernel rather than assuming that a configuration written for an older single-size layout has the same scope. If your requirement is simply the documented top-level default, use transparent_hugepage=never. If the requirement is that no anonymous THP size be enabled, examine every returned size control and configure the per-size policy deliberately.
File-backed and shmem allocations
File-backed mappings and tmpfs/shmem use separate shmem_enabled controls. Kernels implementing multi-size THP can expose per-size shmem controls as well. These paths are why “all THP” and “the top-level anonymous default” are not interchangeable requirements.
Before changing shmem policy, define the scope you need. A workload may rely on a particular file-backed or tmpfs behavior even when anonymous THP is disabled. The inspection command tells you which controls exist; it does not prescribe a universal value for every workload. Apply the boot parameter for the global top-level default, then evaluate additional controls against the specific allocation classes your software uses.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Runtime systemd or tmpfiles writes: when they fit
The RHEL guide describes systemd unit files as an alternative way to manage THP settings at startup. A unit or tmpfiles rule can write the sysfs controls after the kernel has booted. This can be useful when a distribution’s policy framework requires it, when a temporary operational override is desired, or when a site must manage controls that are not represented by its bootloader tooling.
It is not automatically equivalent to a boot parameter. The write occurs later, and the result depends on ordering, whether the unit runs before the relevant workload, and whether it writes every control exposed by that kernel. A service can also fail silently or be superseded by another startup component. If you use this fallback, make the unit’s ordering and error handling explicit, enable it through the distribution’s supported mechanism, and verify the live state after reboot. Keep transparent_hugepage=never as the preferred method when the objective is to prevent the policy from being active during early boot.

Troubleshoot a setting that “returns” after reboot
The parameter is absent from /proc/cmdline
- The bootloader defaults file may have been edited but its generated configuration was not rebuilt.
- The machine may have booted a different entry, kernel, snapshot or firmware-selected loader than the one you edited.
- The argument may have been placed outside the variable that actually supplies the Linux command line.
- A configuration-management process may have restored the previous file.
Compare the saved original command line with the post-reboot value, identify which entry was selected, then use that platform’s supported generator or kernel-argument tool. Do not add repeated copies of the parameter while diagnosing the problem; one explicit value is easier to audit.
The parameter is present, but enabled is not bracketed at never
First confirm that you are reading the same running kernel whose command line you inspected. Then check whether the file is a size-specific or shmem control rather than the top-level file. Multi-size kernels can legitimately present several policies. Re-run the find command, record every path, and decide whether your requirement concerns the top-level anonymous default or all allocation classes.

Inspect the service status and logs, confirm that the sysfs files exist when the unit runs, and check ordering relative to the workload that motivated the change. A unit that runs after a game server, database or other memory-intensive process cannot retroactively guarantee that early allocations used the desired policy. If early-boot behavior is the requirement, move the policy to the kernel command line.
The file or directory is missing
Use the exact paths present on the running kernel. The defrag file and per-size controls are not guaranteed to exist on every version or build. The absence of a path should lead you to document what is available, not to create an invented file or assume that another distribution’s layout applies.
Rollback: restore the previous policy safely
To re-enable the previous default, remove transparent_hugepage=never with the same bootloader tool or configuration method used to add it. If your distribution requires regeneration after editing its defaults file, perform that regeneration. Reboot, then verify the resulting command line and bracketed sysfs policy explicitly.
- Use your recorded pre-change
/proc/cmdlineas the reference. - Remove only the THP argument; preserve unrelated kernel parameters.
- Regenerate the bootloader configuration when the distribution requires it.
- Reboot during a maintenance window.
- Check
/proc/cmdline,enabled, and any size-specific or shmem controls relevant to your scope.
Do not treat deletion from a defaults file as proof of rollback. The running kernel changes only after reboot, and a different boot entry can retain the argument.
A practical decision checklist
- Need a one-session experiment? A runtime sysfs write can test behavior, with the understanding that it ends at reboot and may not cover every control.
- Need a persistent top-level policy? Add
transparent_hugepage=neverto the kernel command line using the local bootloader method. - Need the policy active before userspace? Prefer the boot parameter over a systemd or tmpfiles write.
- Need to eliminate every anonymous THP size? Inspect size-specific files and consider the
thp_anon=policy supported by your kernel. - Need to cover tmpfs or file-backed mappings? Inspect
shmem_enabledand its per-size variants; do not assume the top-level control describes them. - Need audit evidence? Keep the original command line, the edited boot configuration, the reboot time, post-reboot
/proc/cmdline, and the active values from each relevant sysfs file.
What disabling THP does—and does not—promise
Disabling THP changes memory-page policy. It does not provide a universal performance improvement, latency guarantee or fixed resource saving. The effect depends on the workload, kernel version, allocation patterns and which THP classes remain enabled. The appropriate reason to make the change should therefore be stated operationally—for example, a workload requirement, a reproducibility test or a compatibility workaround—rather than assumed from a generic benchmark claim.
The durable technical conclusion is narrower and more useful: the kernel command line establishes the documented boot-time default, while sysfs writes are runtime controls. Confirm the actual command line and the active policy on the machine you intend to support, especially when newer kernels expose independent anonymous-size and shmem settings.
