A deny block needs World Builder permission to place or edit. Here’s how to get one, place it, and check its building restrictions.

To place a deny block in Minecraft Education, you need World Builder permission. Get the block from the Creative inventory or, as shown in a third-party tutorial, use /give @s deny. Select it in your hotbar and place it with your device’s usual block-placement control.

Place the deny block

  1. Make sure you have World Builder permission. Minecraft Education requires it to place and edit Allow and Deny blocks. If you do not have permission, ask the world’s host or teacher to grant it. See Minecraft Education’s specialty-block guidance.
  2. Get a deny block. In Creative mode, select it from the inventory. Alternatively, a Digital Innovation for Education tutorial demonstrates the command /give @s deny. Minecraft Education documents the general syntax as /give <playername> <itemName> <amount> in its Commands in Depth guide; the deny-specific command is demonstrated by the tutorial, not listed in that official guide.
  3. Select the block and place it. Put the deny block in your hotbar, select it, then use your device’s block-placement control. On keyboard and mouse, that is right-click, according to the official controls guide. Touch and controller controls may differ.
  4. Test the restriction with World Builder turned off. Minecraft Education recommends disabling World Builder when testing specialty blocks, since players with World Builder permission can bypass the restrictions.

What a deny block protects

A deny block restricts players without World Builder permission from placing or destroying blocks in the protected area. Minecraft Education’s design guide describes the restriction as applying to the space above the deny block; consult the June 2021 Design Guide for that placement detail.

The block restricts building and breaking, not every interaction: it does not prevent players from using items such as doors, levers, or chests. World Builder users can place and edit deny blocks and are not constrained by their restrictions, so test the area using a player without that permission.

Why can’t I place one?

  • You lack World Builder permission: this is required to place and edit the block, even if you already have one in your inventory.
  • You have not obtained the block: look for it in the Creative inventory or try the deny-specific command demonstrated in the tutorial, if commands are available in your world.
  • You are using a different device: right-click applies to keyboard and mouse; use the matching placement control for touch or controller.
