Yes—you can play 7 Days to Die with friends without renting or running a dedicated server. One player starts or continues a world in the normal game client and becomes the peer-to-peer host. Friends join that live session through the multiplayer/server browser. The trade-off is important: the world exists for multiplayer only while the host is playing. If the host quits, crashes or loses the connection, everyone is disconnected and the world cannot be played again until that host starts it.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted 7 Days to Die servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
The short answer: use a client-hosted peer-to-peer game
A dedicated server is optional for ordinary co-op. The host launches the game, selects New Game or Continue Game, configures the world and opens it to other players. The host’s computer runs the game and also supplies the session authority that a separate server would normally provide.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis is not limited to people on the same home network. In the official multiplayer architecture, peer-to-peer means a game started by a player through the client can accept remote connections. A public peer-to-peer session can appear in the multiplayer list even when players are in different homes.
There is one decisive limitation: a peer-to-peer world is not an always-on service. When the host stops playing, the session ends for everybody. Friends cannot enter that world while the host is offline. If your group needs a world that remains available on a rotating schedule, a dedicated server is the appropriate model.

What everyone needs before joining
Matching game editions and builds
Every participant should own a compatible edition and be running the same current game build. A PC player, a PS5 player and an Xbox Series X|S player may have different update channels or platform restrictions, so cross-platform play must be confirmed for the specific build rather than assumed from the presence of a cross-play label.
- Install the same game update wherever the platform allows you to select or verify a version.
- Use compatible multiplayer, anti-cheat and mod settings.
- Remove modified files or mods that the other players, or another platform, cannot load.
- Confirm that platform privacy settings allow online multiplayer and invitations.
A stable host connection
Because the host is also playing, the host’s upload capacity, latency and connection stability affect every participant. A short interruption can remove the whole group even if the other players have excellent connections. Wired Ethernet is often preferable to congested Wi-Fi, but the essential requirement is a stable broadband connection rather than a particular service tier.

Steam’s published Windows requirements list the following figures for the game. They are client requirements, not a promise of a particular player count or frame rate, and they are identified by Steam as 2024 specifications.
| Component | Minimum listed for Windows | Recommended listed for Windows | How it relates to hosting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 12 GB RAM | The host runs the game and the peer-to-peer session on the same client. |
| Processor | 2.8 GHz quad-core CPU | 3.2 GHz quad-core CPU | Simulation and networking share CPU time with rendering. |
| Graphics | 2 GB dedicated graphics | 4 GB graphics | These are the published game figures; they do not establish a server player limit. |
| Internet | Broadband internet | Broadband internet | Stability and upload capacity matter because the host serves the session. |
Steam warns that running a dedicated server and the game client on one computer can double memory requirements. Normal client-hosted co-op does not require launching that separate server process, so that warning does not mean you must double the listed RAM just to host a peer-to-peer game.

How to host a multiplayer world step by step
- Update and align the players. Before starting, have everyone verify the same game build and agree on whether mods are being used. Cross-platform groups should begin with an unmodified, compatible setup while diagnosing connection problems.
- Start the game client. The player who will host opens 7 Days to Die on the platform being used. That player should plan to remain in the world for the entire session.
- Create or load the world. Choose New Game to create a world or Continue Game to open an existing one. Set the world and gameplay options your group wants before entering the session.
- Make the session discoverable. Set the multiplayer visibility so friends can find the game. The exact wording can differ by platform or build, but a session that is private or invite-only will not necessarily appear in a public browser.
- Keep the host in the game. Do not return to the main menu, close the client or suspend the host platform while friends are joining. The world is being served by this active client.
- Have friends search for the listing. Friends open the game’s multiplayer or server browser and select the peer-to-peer tab or equivalent filter. They select the host’s listing and join. Where the build supports it, searching by the host’s SteamID is the official support recommendation when ordinary discovery fails.
What the host should communicate
Tell the group the host’s in-game name, the approximate time the session will start and whether the world is new or an existing save. If several listings look similar, the name and timing help friends choose the correct peer-to-peer entry. Make clear that the host must stay connected; this avoids the common assumption that the world is a permanent server.
Joining from another platform
Use the platform’s current invite, privacy and account controls in addition to the in-game browser. A platform can block an otherwise valid game listing when cross-network multiplayer is disabled at the account level. Labels and menu paths can change with platform updates, so use the current support controls for the specific console or PC launcher.

The three architectures
The official forum description separates three arrangements:
- Single-player through the client: only the local player is in the world.
- Peer-to-peer co-op through the client: one player’s active game client hosts the world for remote players.
- Dedicated server: a separate, usually headless process runs the world independently of a player’s game client.
Peer-to-peer therefore describes where the session is hosted, not whether players are on a LAN. Remote friends can join when the host opens the session to public connections and the network and platform settings permit it.

- Unlimited hours of gameplay
- Explore - Huge, unique and rich environments, offering the freedom to play the game however you want
- Craft - craft and repair weapons, clothes, armour, tools, vehicles, and more
- Build - Take over a ruin, or build from the ground-up. Design your fortress to include traps and defensive positions to survive the undead
- Cooperate or Compete - Includes two player split screen mode, with support for up to 4 players online, in Player versus Player, co-op survival, or co-op creative modes
Why the host’s exit ends the game
In a client-hosted session, the host is playing on the same machine that is acting as the session host. Quitting, crashing, losing the host connection or closing the game ends the multiplayer world for everyone. The save can normally be continued by the host later, but friends cannot access it independently while that host is offline.
Cross-play and platform limits
Steam lists Online Co-op, LAN Co-op and Cross-Platform Multiplayer for 7 Days to Die, with the PC release dated July 25, 2024. Those labels establish advertised capabilities for the listed release; they do not guarantee that every combination of platform, build, account setting and mod works together.
| Situation | What to verify |
|---|---|
| PC-only group | Same PC build, compatible anti-cheat state and matching mods or no mods. |
| Console-only group | Each console is on the same current console release and allows online multiplayer. |
| PC and console group | Cross-platform multiplayer is enabled for the current build, and no mod or file change blocks the other platform. |
| Dedicated server later | The server’s cross-play, anti-cheat and platform settings must match the clients. |
An official dedicated-server support extract lists these settings for cross-platform compatibility: ServerAllowCrossplay=true, EACEnabled=true, IgnoreEOSSanctions=false and ServerMaxPlayerCount=8. Those are dedicated-server configuration values. They are not instructions to paste into a normal client-hosted game, and they should not be treated as a universal peer-to-peer player limit.

- Build - Take over a ruin, or build from the ground-up. Design your fortress to include traps and defensive positions to survive the undead - the world is fully destructible and moldable.

- Improve - Increase your skills in a multitude of active and passive disciplines. 7 to Die is the only true survival RPG with nearly 50 multi-tiered skill and perk groups.
1. Confirm the host really started a multiplayer session
The host must have entered the world, not merely created a save or remained in a setup screen. Keep the host in the session while friends refresh their browser. Returning to a menu removes the live listing.
2. Use the correct browser category
Have friends select the peer-to-peer tab rather than looking only at dedicated-server listings. If the build provides a search field for SteamID, search for the host’s SteamID exactly as the host supplied it.
3. Match versions and settings
Compare the full game version shown by each platform. A small update difference can prevent discovery or joining. Check anti-cheat state, cross-play eligibility and mods. Temporarily remove incompatible mods and modified files while testing; restore them only after the unmodified connection works.
4. Check firewall, NAT and privacy controls
The host should confirm that the operating-system firewall allows the game to communicate, the router is not blocking the connection and the platform account permits online play. NAT behavior varies by router and platform. Use the platform’s current networking guidance rather than assuming that opening random ports is necessary or safe.

5. Try the official DNS alternatives as a diagnostic
The official support extract lists Cloudflare DNS addresses 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1, or Google DNS addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, as troubleshooting alternatives. Testing one provider can reveal a name-resolution problem, but changing DNS is not a guaranteed fix for firewall, NAT, version or privacy failures. Record the original DNS settings so you can revert them.
6. Test with a simple configuration
For diagnosis, create a fresh world with no mods, use the same visibility setting for everyone and have one friend search immediately after the host enters. If that works, add custom settings or mods back one at a time. If it still fails, the remaining causes are more likely to be platform compatibility, account restrictions or network filtering than the save itself.
Keeping a peer-to-peer session stable
Host-side practices
- Close unnecessary applications that compete for CPU, memory or upload bandwidth.
- Prevent the host computer or console from sleeping during play.
- Use a stable network connection and avoid large downloads or streams on the same connection.
- Save and exit normally when possible so the host can continue the world later.
- Tell players in advance when the host must leave; there is no independent server process to keep the session alive.
Player-side practices
- Join after the host has entered the world and made it discoverable.
- Keep each player’s game build and mod state aligned with the host.
- If the listing disappears, ask whether the host returned to the menu or lost connection before changing local settings.
- Use the peer-to-peer filter and SteamID search before concluding that the host’s world is unavailable.
Peer-to-peer versus a dedicated server
| Decision point | Peer-to-peer client host | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| Rental cost | No separate server rental; the group uses the game client and existing internet connection. | Usually requires a separate machine or a hosting fee; the exact price depends on the provider and configuration. |
| Availability | Only while the host is playing and connected. | Can remain online independently of any player’s game client. |
| Setup | Start or continue a world, set visibility and join through the browser. | Install or rent the server, configure it, apply updates and manage access. |
| Performance resources | The host’s CPU, memory and connection handle both play and hosting. | Server resources can be allocated separately from each player’s gaming machine. |
| Best fit | Small groups with shared play times and a reliable host. | Persistent worlds, rotating schedules or groups that need access when the original host is offline. |
| Administration | Simple, but the host controls when the world exists. | More control and persistence, with additional update, backup, security and configuration work. |
Choose peer-to-peer when
- The same person usually plays with the group.
- Everyone can meet at scheduled times.
- You want to avoid server rental and server administration.
- The host’s hardware and connection handle the group comfortably.
Choose a dedicated server when
- Friends need to play while the original host is offline.
- The world should remain available between sessions.
- Different players take turns hosting at different times.
- You need separate server resources or more formal administration.
Moving from peer-to-peer to a dedicated server can solve the availability problem, but the exact world-transfer process depends on the edition, server software and current build. Confirm save compatibility and backup procedures before replacing the original world.
Cost and resource expectations
Client-hosted co-op does not add a dedicated-server rental charge. You still need a copy of the game for each participating player, a compatible online platform account where required and an internet connection. No universal dedicated-server price, player-slot price or hosting region is established here, so those figures should be checked against the specific service and date rather than assumed.
Do not buy or install server software merely to make a normal co-op session visible. Start with the client-hosted method. A dedicated server becomes worthwhile when persistence, independent availability or separate resources matter more than the extra setup.
A practical launch checklist
- Everyone confirms the same current edition and build.
- The group agrees on mod and anti-cheat compatibility.
- The host checks hardware, network stability and platform privacy settings.
- The host selects New Game or Continue Game.
- The host sets the session visibility and enters the world.
- Friends open the multiplayer browser, choose the peer-to-peer tab and search by SteamID if needed.
- The host remains connected for the entire session.
- If discovery fails, check version, browser tab, firewall/NAT, privacy settings and DNS in that order.
- If offline access is a requirement, plan a dedicated-server setup instead of trying to keep a peer-to-peer world running without its host.
Bottom line
For scheduled co-op, a dedicated server is unnecessary: have one player host the world from the game client and let friends join the peer-to-peer listing. The arrangement is free of a separate server rental, works beyond a local LAN and is quick to start. Its non-negotiable limitation is host dependence. When the host quits or disconnects, the multiplayer world ends until that host launches it again. Persistent, always-available play requires a dedicated server.
