For two or three friends who usually play together, start a non-dedicated co-op session. It is the fastest option and needs no separate server, but everyone is pulled back toward the host when they travel too far and the world is normally available only while the host is playing.
Choose a dedicated server when players need to spread across the map, want the world to stay online while one person is away, or need more control over settings and administration. You can run it on a separate machine or rent one; renting is the practical choice if nobody wants to maintain server software and networking.

ARK co-op or dedicated server: the short answer
| What your group needs | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional sessions with two or three friends doing the same activity | Non-dedicated co-op | Quick to start, but the host must be playing and the group is limited by the host-distance tether. |
| Players want to build, gather, or explore in different parts of the map | Dedicated server | Requires a running server process and more setup or rental cost. |
| The world should remain available when the original host is offline | Dedicated server | Someone must keep the machine or rented service running and maintained. |
| Friends on different platforms | A dedicated server configured for the exact edition and platform mix | Cross-play depends on the ARK edition, platforms, and server configuration; it is not universal. |
| No spare computer or interest in server administration | Rented dedicated server | Monthly or recurring cost, plus the need to check provider support, backups, and cancellation terms. |
A dedicated server is not automatically an official server. A private machine or rented instance can be dedicated while remaining privately administered.
What a non-dedicated ARK session is
ARK’s Host/Local documentation describes a non-dedicated session as being close to single-player, with invited friends joining the host’s game. The host is still playing in that same session; the game is not transferred to an independent server process. As the ARK Official Community Wiki puts it: “A non dedicated session is almost the exact same as a single player session, however when you open the pause menu the game does not freeze.”

Enjoy an endless stream of new ARK content as the creativity and talent of the community is fully unleashed for the first time ever across gaming platforms!
The host-distance tether
The defining limitation is an approximately 250 m host barrier. When another player moves beyond that range, the game pulls the player back toward the host. The exact behavior and available distance controls can vary by edition and settings, but the practical result is the same: a party can work together near the host, not freely divide into distant expeditions.
This affects ordinary plans in several ways:
- Two players cannot comfortably establish separate bases on opposite sides of the map.
- Resource runs, cave trips, and taming projects need to stay within the host’s operating area.
- A player who wants to scout ahead may be snapped back instead of continuing independently.
- Moving the host becomes a group decision because the playable area follows that person.
When co-op is the right choice
Use non-dedicated co-op for a small group that normally travels together and wants to start immediately. It avoids installing, updating, securing, and backing up a separate server. It is also a good way to test whether everyone owns the same ARK edition and can connect before committing to a longer-running server.

The host’s local session is the place where the world is running. In practical terms, friends normally cannot continue in that world when the host has closed the session. Treat this mode as a host-run play session, not as a persistent independent server.
What a dedicated server changes
A dedicated server runs ARK’s server software separately from any player’s game client. Players connect to that process instead of joining one person’s local session. As long as the process and its machine or rented service remain online, the world does not depend on the original host keeping the game open.

Independent exploration
Because the server is not tied to one player’s local character, players can travel to different regions, build separate bases, gather resources independently, and return to the same persistent world later. The host-distance barrier that defines non-dedicated play is removed.
Administration and configuration
Dedicated operation gives the administrator a clearer place to manage server-wide settings, access, updates, backups, and (where the edition and platform support it) mods. The server-configuration documentation distinguishes these settings from the local options used by non-dedicated play, so a setting available in one mode should not be assumed to exist in the other.
Dedicated does not mean official
“Dedicated” describes how the server runs, not who operates it. A private server on your own hardware and a rented server are both dedicated if the server process runs independently of a player’s client. They are different from an official server operated by the game publisher.

- Chop down trees and mine metal and other precious resources to build massive multi-leveled structures composed of complex snap-linked parts
- Confirm the edition first. Every participant must have the same ARK edition unless the exact server and platform combination explicitly supports the intended cross-play arrangement.
- Open the local-host screen. From the game’s main menu, use the Host/Local option (or the equivalent label on your platform).
- Choose the map and local settings. Select the map, difficulty, progression, and other options before launching. Tether-distance controls apply to non-dedicated sessions; increasing a value does not turn the session into a dedicated server.
- Launch the non-dedicated session. Start the world so the host enters it as a player.
- Invite friends through the platform’s normal invite or join flow. Friends should use the same edition, updated to the same version, and accept the host’s invitation or locate the session using the platform’s server list.
- Keep the host in the session. The group can play while the host remains connected. If the host ends the local session, the co-op world is no longer available as an independent server.
How to make tethered co-op less frustrating
- Agree that the host will stay near the activity most players are doing.
- Use the session for shared objectives rather than parallel base building.
- Move as a group before starting a long gathering or cave run.
- Save a copy of the local world when the platform and edition provide a supported backup or export option.
How to run a dedicated ARK server
There are two routes: self-host the server software or rent a managed instance. The official community setup material documents SteamCMD installation and platform-specific configuration. Exact files and options depend on the ARK edition and the operating system.
Self-hosting checklist
- Choose a separate machine. It must be able to run the server continuously while also handling the network traffic for your players. A computer used for someone’s game can work only if its operating system, bandwidth, and uptime are sufficient; a separate machine avoids competing with the host’s game client.
- Install the server software with SteamCMD where required. Follow the edition’s official community setup instructions rather than copying settings from a different ARK release.
- Select the map and server-wide configuration. Set the world rules, player limits, passwords or access controls, and other options in the server configuration rather than in a player’s local Host/Local screen.
- Configure the network and firewall. The server must be reachable from the internet or your private network, depending on who should join. Allow the server application through the operating system firewall and configure the router or hosting network as needed. The exact ports and protocol requirements depend on the edition and deployment.
- Apply platform and cross-play settings. Dedicated setup supports platform modes documented for the relevant edition. Choose only a combination that the game and all players support.
- Handle Windows-specific requirements when applicable. The official setup documentation notes additional certificate configuration for some Windows cross-play scenarios. Treat that as a prerequisite for the affected combination, not as a universal ARK requirement.
- Start the server and test with one player. Verify that the server appears or can be joined, that the selected map loads, and that the intended platform mix connects before inviting the whole group.
- Plan maintenance. Schedule updates, keep backups of world and configuration files, and decide who can restart the process or restore a backup.
What self-hosting costs in time and resources
Self-hosting avoids a hosting bill but shifts the work to your group. You are responsible for operating-system updates, ARK updates, firewall and router changes, crashes, save backups, and keeping the machine powered on. An unreliable home connection can produce a worse experience than a geographically closer rented server even when the hardware is adequate.
How much hardware does a dedicated server need?
There is no single memory number that applies to every ARK server. The dedicated-server resource guidance says demand changes with the map, connected-player count, world age, structures, creatures, storage, configuration, and installed mods.
| Factor | Why it changes demand |
|---|---|
| Map | Different maps have different world data and simulation loads. |
| Connected players | More simultaneous activity creates more characters, movement, inventory, and combat state to process. |
| World age | A long-running save can accumulate more built objects, tamed creatures, dropped items, and other state than a new world. |
| Structures and creatures | Large bases and extensive tame collections add persistent entities the server must load and simulate. |
| Storage and configuration | Save size, logging, rates, and other settings affect disk and processing needs. |
| Mods | Mods can add data and behavior, and their compatibility must be maintained alongside the base game. |
For scale, the cited dedicated-server guidance gives 3.5–4.5 GiB for The Island as an example. That is an example range, not a universal minimum or a guarantee for a particular player count, world age, or mod list. Leave headroom for the operating system, updates, backups, and growth rather than sizing a machine exactly to that figure.

Should you rent an ARK server?
Renting is the straightforward option when nobody has a spare machine, reliable uptime, or the desire to administer server software. A provider supplies the running environment and usually a control panel, while your group still chooses the game settings and manages who can join.
What to compare before paying
- Game edition: confirm whether the plan runs ARK: Survival Evolved, ARK: Survival Ascended, or both. They are separate editions with different server and platform rules.
- Platform and cross-play support: verify the exact PC and console combination, not just a generic “cross-play” label.
- Region and latency: select a location reasonably close to most players.
- Player slots: check the included concurrent-player limit and the cost of changing it.
- Mod support: confirm that the edition, platform, and control panel support the mods your group intends to use.
- Backups and restores: look for automatic backup frequency, retention, and a practical restore process.
- Access and administration: check whether you can change server settings, restart safely, view logs, and control passwords or allow-lists.
- Cancellation and data export: understand the billing cycle and whether you can download your world and configuration if you leave.
Prices, supported editions, and availability change frequently, so verify those details on the provider’s current plan page before purchasing. The rental decision is mainly about outsourcing uptime and maintenance; it does not remove the need to match editions, platforms, and versions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can friends on different platforms play together?
Sometimes, but “ARK” is not one cross-play environment. ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Survival Ascended are separate products, and their server and platform rules can differ. A server that accepts one edition or platform combination is not evidence that another combination will work.
Use an edition-and-platform check
- Write down each player’s exact edition and platform, including whether a PC player is using a platform-specific build.
- Check the target server’s documented platform mode for that edition.
- Confirm that all clients are updated to compatible versions.
- Only then choose self-hosting or a rental plan that explicitly supports the combination.
An Xbox announcement for ARK: Survival Evolved documented Xbox/Windows 10 cross-play and mentioned both player-hosted dedicated and non-dedicated sessions. That announcement applies to the stated Evolved and Xbox/Windows 10 context; it should not be generalized to every console, PC storefront, or Ascended server.

Troubleshooting: the problems groups hit first
“My friend is pulled back when traveling.”
That is the non-dedicated host barrier. Keep the party near the host or move to a dedicated server. Adjusting tether-related settings may change the distance behavior, but it does not provide the persistence and independent operation of a dedicated process.

“Friends cannot join unless I am online.”
That is expected for a host-run local session. Leave the host session running during play, or migrate the world to a dedicated server that can remain online separately.
“The server does not appear for one platform.”
Recheck the edition, platform mode, server visibility, and client versions. A generic cross-play claim is not enough; the exact combination must be supported by that edition’s server configuration.
“Players connect but are disconnected or experience severe lag.”
Check the server’s region, upload capacity, machine load, and whether the host is simultaneously running a demanding game client. On a self-hosted setup, review firewall and router configuration. On a rented setup, compare another region or contact the provider with connection times and server logs.
“A modded server will not let someone join.”
Verify that the edition supports the mod, that the server and client have compatible versions, and that every player is using the same required mod set and load order. If the platform does not support the intended mod arrangement, a different platform or a vanilla configuration may be necessary.

Stop inviting players until the server and clients are on compatible versions. Keep dated world and configuration backups so you can restore the last known-good state. Do not overwrite the only save while experimenting with new settings or mods.
A practical decision path for your group
- Count the players and their habits. If everyone normally stays together and plays short sessions, begin with non-dedicated co-op.
- Ask whether anyone needs to roam alone. If the answer is yes, the tether is likely to become the deciding problem; choose dedicated hosting.
- Decide whether the world must exist without the original host. If friends need to log in independently, use a dedicated server.
- Resolve edition and platform compatibility before spending money. Cross-play support is specific to the exact combination.
- Choose who will operate the server. A technically confident player with a spare machine can self-host; otherwise rent a managed instance.
- Start conservatively. Test the map, connection, settings, and backups with a small group before adding many mods or inviting everyone.
Bottom line
Non-dedicated co-op is the quickest, lowest-administration way for a small party to play together, provided everyone accepts the approximately 250 m host tether and the host-online dependency. Dedicated hosting is the better fit for independent exploration, persistent availability, mixed-platform plans that the edition explicitly supports, and groups that want centralized administration. Self-host when you have suitable hardware and time; rent when you want someone else to handle uptime, networking, and maintenance.
