To play Arma Reforger with friends, open Multiplayer, find the same official or community server, and have everyone join that listing. PC, Xbox and PlayStation 5 players can play together when the server permits cross-platform connections. For an occasional private game, a PC player can create one through Multiplayer > Host tab > Host new server. For a regular group that needs the world available while no friend is online, use a dedicated server configured for cross-platform play.

Supported platforms and crossplay
Bohemia Interactive supports Arma Reforger on PC, Xbox and PlayStation 5. A mixed-platform group can use the same server only when that server is configured to accept all of the required platforms. Server configuration can enable this with crossPlatform=true. If the setting is disabled, a console player may not see a PC-hosted listing even when the server name and game mode are correct.
A matching game version
Everyone must be on the same release branch and version. A friend who has an update pending, is using a different branch, or has not restarted after an update can fail to see or join a server that appears normal to everyone else. Check the branch or version before changing network settings.

The same content
Community servers can require Workshop missions, maps or other add-ons. Every participant needs the required content downloaded, activated and compatible with the server. Console storage and performance limits can differ from PC, so a mod collection that works for the host may still be unsuitable for a console player.
The quickest method: join one server together
This is the simplest approach when you do not need a private, persistent world. Use an official server or an unmodded community server first; it removes most variables while you confirm that everyone can connect.

- Agree on one server name and one game mode before anyone searches. Conflict and Game Master are examples of modes you may see in the browser.
- Have everyone search for that exact listing and select it. Do not rely on friends being near one another in the list, because each player can receive different results.
- If the group includes PC, Xbox and PlayStation 5, make sure crossplay is enabled by the server. A server that accepts only one platform family cannot be used by the whole group.
- When the listing requires Workshop content, wait for every required mod to finish downloading and activating before pressing the join option.
Once one person is inside, the others should continue joining the same listing rather than starting separate searches for a similarly named server. Record the exact server name and mode in your group chat so spelling, punctuation and duplicate community listings do not cause confusion.
Why friends see different server lists
The multiplayer browser is filtered per player. Bohemia’s support guidance identifies filters, platform restrictions, ping limits, region, and crossplay settings as reasons two friends can receive different results. Compare these settings before assuming the server is offline.

Use identical browser filters
- Clear restrictive name, mode or availability filters and search again.
- Use the same region selection. A server outside one player’s selected region may be hidden even though another player can see it.
- Review any ping limit. A low maximum-ping value can remove a server for one connection while leaving it visible to another.
- Check platform and crossplay filters. A PC-only view will hide a server intended for a mixed PC and console group.
Confirm the listing itself
Ask the person who can see the server to read its full name, mode and platform requirements. Search those details rather than choosing the first result with a similar name. If the listing appears only after filters are reset, restore restrictions one at a time to identify which setting was excluding it.
How to host a private session from a PC
Player-hosting is the built-in way to run a small, occasional private game. It is PC-only: Bohemia’s official hosting guidance states, “Keep in mind that server hosting is exclusive to PC players.” Xbox and PlayStation 5 users can join a PC-hosted server when its configuration allows crossplay, but they cannot create the player-hosted session themselves.

Create the session
- On the PC, open Multiplayer from the main menu.
- Switch to the Host tab.
- Select Host new server.
- Choose the game mode and configure the session. If console friends will join, configure the host for cross-platform access rather than leaving it PC-only.
- Start the server and tell friends the exact server name and mode.
Friends can find the hosted server in the multiplayer list. A PC friend can also accept an invitation through Steam, which is useful when the listing is difficult to locate. Console participants should use the in-game browser and the agreed server details.
What the PC host must provide
The host’s computer and network need to remain available for the duration of the session. If the host exits the game, loses connectivity or shuts down the PC, the player-hosted world is no longer available. Internet visibility can also require router port forwarding; the technical documentation describes this as a possible requirement rather than a universal step, so first test whether friends can connect without changing the router.

Only open or forward the ports required by the game’s current technical documentation, and make the rule specific to the host computer. If the server is invisible while the game is running, check the operating-system firewall and router rules before repeatedly recreating the session.
When a dedicated server is the better choice
A dedicated server runs independently of any one player’s game session. Bohemia provides dedicated-server tools, and hosting can be arranged locally or through a third-party provider. This model suits a group that plays regularly, wants a stable address and settings, or needs the world to remain available when the usual host is offline.
Configure platform access
Set the server to accept every platform represented in your group. A cross-platform setup uses crossPlatform=true; alternatively, configure the permitted platforms explicitly according to the server documentation. Test with one PC, one Xbox and one PlayStation 5 account if your group spans all three, because a server that works for two platforms can still be rejecting the third.
Plan for administration
- Choose who owns configuration changes and restarts.
- Keep the server on the same game branch as the players.
- Document the server name, region, mode and any required Workshop content.
- Decide whether the server should be public, protected by the available password controls, or discoverable only by sharing its details.
A dedicated server removes the requirement for a friend to stay in the game as host, but it does not remove version, mod, platform or network compatibility checks. A persistent server with incompatible content will still reject players.

Player-hosted versus dedicated: which fits your group?

Workshop mods and joining compatibility
Workshop content expands the available missions and other add-ons, but it adds another compatibility gate. Before inviting the group, identify whether the server is modded and list the required items.
- Have each friend open the server listing and allow every required Workshop download to complete.
- Confirm the add-ons are activated in the game, not merely downloaded.
- Restart the game if an item installed during the current session does not appear active.
- Verify that all players are using the same game branch and that the server has not changed its mod set since they downloaded it.
- If a console cannot load the required content, test an official or unmodded community server to separate a mod limitation from a general connection problem.
Do not assume that a mod with the same name is identical across platforms or branches. Console storage and performance limits can differ from PC, and a large or demanding collection may prevent a console player from joining even when the PC host is working normally.

The reliable invitation method depends on the session type. For a PC player-hosted server, create the server first, then share its exact listing details. PC friends may accept an invitation through Steam. For Xbox and PlayStation 5 participants, give them the server name, mode and any region information so they can locate the listing in Multiplayer; the documented cross-platform route is joining the same browser listing rather than assuming a platform-specific invite will transfer.
For a dedicated server, distribute the server name and any access information before the session starts. Ask everyone to save the agreed browser filters so a later search does not hide the server. If the server is modded, send the required Workshop list at the same time as the invitation.

Troubleshooting: why your friend cannot see or join the server
They cannot see the listing
- Compare browser filters, especially region, maximum ping, mode and name filters.
- Check whether one player has disabled crossplay or selected a platform-only view.
- Confirm the server is configured to accept the friend’s platform.
- Read the full server name and mode from the player who can see it, then search again with filters cleared.
If an official server or an unmodded community server appears after these changes, the original problem is likely the private server’s configuration or mod set rather than the friend’s account.

- Confirm every player is on the same release branch and version.
- Check that all required Workshop content has finished downloading and is active.
- Look for a server-side mod update that occurred after one player installed the earlier version.
- Test an unmodded server. A successful test points to content compatibility; failure there points toward version, platform or network causes.
The PC-hosted server never appears for anyone
- Verify that the host actually started the server through Multiplayer > Host tab > Host new server.
- Check the host computer’s firewall for a rule allowing the game.
- Test from another connection if possible to distinguish local-network visibility from an internet reachability problem.
- Review router restrictions and the technical documentation’s port-forwarding requirements. Apply only the required rule, then restart the server and search again.
Console friends are rejected while PC friends connect
This pattern usually indicates platform configuration rather than a general outage. Confirm crossplay is enabled and that the server accepts Xbox and PlayStation 5 connections, not only PC. Then check console mod storage and the exact required Workshop content.
Everyone was able to play yesterday, but not today
Start with version and mod checks: an automatic update or a changed Workshop item can leave one player out of sync. Compare the server’s current requirements, restart clients after updates, and repeat the official or unmodded-server test before changing router settings.
A practical setup for different groups
Two or three friends playing occasionally
Use a PC player’s built-in host. Agree on the mode, create the server, share the exact listing name, and close the session when finished. This minimizes setup and avoids maintaining a persistent service.
A mixed PC, Xbox and PlayStation 5 group
Use a server configured for cross-platform access. For a one-night game, a PC player can host; for recurring sessions, a dedicated server reduces dependence on that player’s schedule. Keep the mod list small until every platform has joined successfully.
A group that plays on a fixed schedule
Choose a dedicated server, record its configuration and Workshop requirements, and assign one person to handle updates. The world remains available when the usual host is away, while the documented version, content and network checks still apply after every update.
Pre-session checklist
- Everyone is on the same release branch and version.
- The server name, game mode and region are agreed in advance.
- Browser filters and crossplay settings will not hide the listing.
- The server accepts every platform in the group.
- Required Workshop items are downloaded, active and compatible.
- A PC host will remain online, or the dedicated server is running.

Bohemia Interactive describes Arma Reforger as “best played with others.” In practice, the dependable routine is to match the server listing and filters first, then check platform access, versions, mods and networking in that order. That sequence finds the common causes without changing settings that were never responsible.
