Armed Police Batrider is an arcade vertical shooter built around a simple loop: steer with an eight-way joystick, fire with A, use bombs with B, collect shot items to raise your weapon level, and keep moving as enemy patterns and rank pressure intensify. The character you choose is also your ship and weapon package, while the button used to confirm that character selects a second style that changes firepower, option strength, movement speed, and autofire rate. Learn those two choices first; medal chains and score extends matter only after you can survive long enough to use them.
The arcade game is associated with releases from 1997–1998, with Japanese Revision 1 (software A), Japanese Revision 2 (software B), and a Korean Revision 2 documented separately. Button availability and some commands differ by board revision, so treat revision-specific notes below as cabinet-dependent rather than universal.

The basic control loop
The cabinet uses an eight-way joystick and two action buttons. The reference control labels are A for shooting and B for bombs, even when a cabinet’s physical buttons use different colors or lettering. Hold the joystick toward the direction you need, tap or hold A to fire, and press B when a bomb or special weapon is the safest way through a dangerous pattern.
Move with the eight-way joystick
Eight-way movement lets you travel horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Small corrections are usually safer than holding one direction continuously: bullets often leave narrow lanes that can be crossed with a brief tap. Keep your ship low enough to read incoming patterns, but leave room to move upward when enemies or walls close in. Your selected style changes speed, so the same joystick input does not feel identical with every character setup.

A: shoot, and a guide-described charge attack
Pressing A fires the ship’s normal weapon. A specialist guide also describes an aura or charge mechanic: when A is left unpressed, a close-range aura charges, and pressing A releases a stronger attack. Because the exact behavior can depend on the character, use that description as a guide rather than assuming every ship has an identical charge. If you are learning a character, test the unpressed-A interval in a safe opening before relying on it in a crowded section.
B: bomb or special weapon
B activates the bomb or special weapon. It is both an offensive tool and a survival button: use it to clear a threatening group, damage a boss, or escape a pattern that has removed your safe routes. An older player FAQ describes bomb use as granting temporary invulnerability and destroying enemy projectiles. That is a secondary player account, not a universal timing measurement, so do not wait for an exact number of invulnerable frames. Press B early enough that the activation can protect you.
Optional cabinet commands
Some commands are useful for operators and advanced players but are not required for a first credit. The specialist guide describes a Start-plus-button combination for displaying score information and adjusting autofire rate. On Revision B, which lacks a C button, Start+Up is documented for lowering the autofire rate. Because the available buttons and command behavior depend on the board and control panel, check the machine’s revision before trying to reproduce these inputs.

Character selection is not cosmetic. Each character brings a distinct main shot, option weapon, and special weapon, so the choice determines how you aim, how you handle side targets, and how quickly you can damage large enemies. The roster includes front-firing, wide, search or homing, and Garegga-style trajectories, along with weapon properties such as Vulcan, beam, laser, and napalm.

Examples of different weapon identities
- D.D. is cited for a wide Vulcan shot, giving broad coverage in front of the ship.
- Shorty is associated with a homing or search-oriented weapon, useful when targets are not directly aligned.
- Tag-T is known for a homing laser, changing how you track enemies compared with a straight Vulcan stream.
These examples show why two characters using the same style can still feel completely different. A wide shot can clear formations without precise alignment; a search weapon can reach targets outside your immediate lane; a focused beam or laser can reward deliberate positioning against a boss. Select a weapon identity that matches the problem you struggle with rather than treating one character as universally best.
The selection button sets your style
On the character-select screen, the button used to confirm the choice adds a style. The documented trade-offs are:
| Selection input | Main shot | Options | Movement | Listed starting fire rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Strong | Weak | Standard | 15 Hz |
| B | Weak | Strong | Standard | 12 Hz |
| C, or A+B on some setups | Strong | Strong | Slower | 20 Hz |
| Start | Weak | Weak | Faster | 10 Hz |
The rates and labels come from a specialist reference and may be affected by the machine’s revision or control panel. C changes option formation for Battle Garegga characters; a board without a C button cannot offer that exact input. The practical decision is straightforward: choose A when you want dependable primary fire, B when your options do most of the work, C when you can accept slower movement for combined power, or Start when mobility is more valuable than damage.

- Pick a character with a trajectory you can read. A broad or search-oriented weapon is often easier to understand than a highly specialized pattern.
- Use A style if enemies regularly survive because your main shot is too weak, or if you are still learning where to position the ship.
- Try B style when option coverage solves more problems than direct fire, especially against enemies approaching from angles.
- Use C only after you can control a slower ship; its combined strength is offset by reduced movement speed.
- Use Start when you are dying while repositioning and can accept lower damage and option strength.
Power-ups and the five shot levels
Shot items raise your main weapon through five levels. A large shot pickup advances the weapon one level immediately. Small shot pickups accumulate, with increasing requirements for later levels:

| Target level | Small shot pickups needed for that advance | What to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Level 2 | 1 | The first small pickup advances the starting weapon. |
| Level 3 | 2 | Two additional small pickups are required. |
| Level 4 | 4 | The requirement doubles again. |
| Level 5 | 8 | The final listed level needs eight additional small pickups. |
Collect a large shot item as soon as the route is safe, but do not cross a bullet lane merely to grab it. Losing a life and rebuilding from a weaker weapon can cost more than the immediate level. Small items are still valuable because their count carries the weapon toward the next level.
The special level-up sequence
The specialist guide describes another way to level a weapon: drop three shot or option icons, then collect the next icon of the corresponding type. This is an advanced manipulation rather than a beginner requirement. The same guide warns that activating these special level-ups early can cause additional bosses to appear at the end of Stage 5. If you are learning the game, prioritize survival and ordinary pickups; experiment with deliberate drops only after you know which revision and route you are playing.
Shot versus option power
Shot items affect the main weapon. Option strength is part of the character and style package, and option formations can behave differently for Battle Garegga characters. A setup with strong main fire may still feel weak against targets arriving from the side, while a strong-option setup can cover those angles but leave the centerline underpowered. Watch where damage is actually coming from before deciding that a pickup or style choice failed.

Scoring basics: medals, extends, and other points
Survival comes first, but the scoring system rewards consistent collection and route knowledge. Enemy point values and boss scoring are separate parts of the game; the medal rules below are only one component of a full score.

Keep the medal chain alive
Medals begin at 100 points and rise through 200, 300, and successive values to 1,000, then continue in 1,000-point increments until 10,000. The chain is continuous across a wave: catch every medal, and the next medal is worth more. Miss one, and the next wave starts over at 100 points. The sequence is documented by Arcade History, whose publication year is not stated.
- Position under the first medal before it reaches the bottom of the screen.
- After each pickup, move toward the next medal’s path rather than chasing enemies unnecessarily.
- Use a bomb when a bullet pattern would force you to miss a medal and the chain is worth preserving.
- If one medal is missed, stop taking dangerous detours for the old value; rebuild the chain from 100 on the next wave.
The important skill is not memorizing the maximum value. It is planning a safe route through the entire medal wave. A missed medal resets the following wave, so one reckless movement can erase the benefit of several successful pickups.
Score extends
Arcade History lists an extra life at each 1.5 million points. Treat that as the documented score-extend threshold, not as a promise that every board, DIP-switch setup, or mode uses an identical life system. The same source gives the figure without a publication year.
Advanced extend conditions
The specialist guide describes three additional methods, all of which should be checked against the relevant board revision before you plan a run:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Destroy the large blue Highway hovercraft after it stops in the tunnel.
- Miss three maximum or large bomb items.
- Miss three extend items. The resulting extend fills empty life slots and is described as avoiding the rank gain associated with ordinary extends.
These are route-specific techniques, not replacements for learning the 1.5-million-point threshold. A beginner gains more from surviving stages and preserving medal chains than from deliberately missing items without knowing the timing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Rank: why a successful run can become harder
Rank is a difficulty value that changes during a run. The specialist guide notes that credits and collecting extends can affect it, while its technical values and memory-address details are community-maintained rather than an official universal formula. In practical terms, a run that earns power and lives can also face more demanding enemy behavior or bullet pressure later.
Do not treat rank as a reason to avoid every extend. Extra lives are valuable practice and can carry you farther. Instead, recognize the trade-off: aggressive scoring and repeated life collection may increase the challenge, while a conservative route can feel more stable. If two machines seem to react differently to the same strategy, compare their revision, DIP-switch settings, and mode before concluding that your controls are at fault.

Arcade revisions, modes, and cabinet differences
Documented revisions
Arcade History distinguishes Revision 1, using software A in Japan, from Revision 2, using software B in Japan; an alternate Korean Revision 2 is also listed. Revision B is specifically noted as lacking a C button for one autofire command. The archived Raizing manual includes DIP-switch settings for starting rank, timer rank, and coin configuration, so operator settings can change the opening conditions and credit behavior.
Course names are not interchangeable
An older player FAQ describes Beginner, Normal, Advance, and Special courses. The specialist guide uses Normal, Advanced, and Boss Rush terminology. Those labels may reflect different boards, unlock states, or documentation conventions. Read the title screen and machine instructions for the cabinet in front of you instead of assuming that “Advance” and “Advanced” are the same course.
Release-date and home-play context
Sources do not agree on one uncontested production date: Arcade History labels the game “1997,” the Museum of the Game lists 1998, and an older FAQ records uncertainty around 1997. The safest description is an arcade release associated with 1997–1998, with regional and revision dates differing. The Sega Astro City Mini V is identified as the first home port, released in 2022, 24 years after the original according to the specialist guide; that account also notes slightly changed music. Verify regional compatibility, the exact included title, and current availability before buying any hardware.
A first-credit practice plan
- Identify the cabinet. Look for the revision, available buttons, and any operator settings. If there is no C button, do not expect the C-style or C-based autofire command to work.
- Choose one character and stay with it. Learn its shot trajectory, option behavior, and special weapon instead of switching after every death.
- Select A style first. Strong main fire and a 15 Hz listed starting rate provide a clear baseline. Move to B, C, or Start after you understand what problem the alternate style solves.
- Practice the control loop. Move in short joystick taps, hold A when you need continuous fire, and press B before a pattern removes your escape route.
- Collect safe shot items. Track your progress toward the five levels and recognize that large items advance one level immediately.
- Learn one medal wave. Follow the medal path, preserve the chain, and accept a reset when a pickup is genuinely unsafe.
- Record the failure type. If you die while aligned with an enemy, change positioning; if you die while crossing bullets, change timing or bomb earlier; if you cannot reach a target, reconsider your character or style.
- Only then explore advanced mechanics. Try charge attacks, special level-ups, route-specific extends, and style changes after the basic movement and pickup rhythm are reliable.
Quick reference
| Element | Beginner takeaway |
|---|---|
| Movement | Eight-way joystick; use short corrections to stay in safe lanes. |
| Shooting | A fires; leaving A unpressed is described as charging an aura for some character behavior. |
| Bomb | B activates the defensive/offensive special weapon; use it before you are trapped. |
| Character | Determines main shot, options, special weapon, trajectory, and power properties. |
| Style | A favors main shot, B favors options, C balances both but slows movement, and Start speeds movement while weakening both. |
| Shot levels | Five levels; large shot items advance one level, while small items require 1, 2, 4, then 8 for later advances. |
| Medals | Values rise from 100 to 10,000 when every pickup is caught; a miss resets the next wave to 100. |
| Score extend | References list one at each 1.5 million points. |
| Difficulty | Rank can rise during a run, and its behavior may vary with revision and operator settings. |
Master the joystick, A, and B loop before chasing technical score routes. Once movement is dependable, the character-and-style choice gives you a deliberate weapon plan, and medal chaining turns safe routing into score. Revision awareness matters throughout: a missing button, different DIP-switch setting, or alternate course label can change what the cabinet allows.
