Gustave’s core combat loop is to build Charges with attacks and skills, then spend them on Overcharge for a heavy hit. Because Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 combines turn-based choices with timed attack and defense inputs, playing him well means managing both that resource and your timing.
How Gustave’s Charge-and-Overcharge loop works
Use Gustave’s attacks and abilities to build Charges on his mechanical arm. When you choose Overcharge, he releases that stored energy; Sandfall Interactive describes the attack as growing more damaging the longer it is charged. The developer does not prescribe a required Charge count, so treat the timing as a choice about how much damage you need and how long you can afford to wait. Sandfall Interactive’s official site

Gamer Guides reports a maximum of 10 stored Charges and recommends waiting until full charge for maximum Overcharge damage, except when a nearly defeated enemy makes an earlier spend worthwhile. Its guide lists Overcharge as a 4 AP Lightning attack with high single-target damage that scales with Charges, can Break, and resets Charges when used. Those figures and effects are guide-reported, not independently verified against current patch notes. Gamer Guides’ Gustave guide
Build Charges with skills, not just basic attacks
Sandfall describes basic attacks as low damage compared with skills, and says attack skills use timed inputs that can improve their effect. Your practical goal with Gustave is to choose skills that produce useful damage while advancing the Overcharge loop.

Early option: Lumière Assault
Gamer Guides recommends Lumière Assault early because it hits five times for 3 AP and, according to the guide, Critical Hits with the skill generate additional Charges. The multi-hit pattern creates more opportunities for critical hits, though the guide does not establish a guaranteed Charge gain on every use. It suggests investing in Luck and Critical Rate to support that approach.
Support and later progression options
The same guide recommends Powerful as an early support skill, listing it at 3 AP and describing a buff to one to three allies for three turns that may also grant Charges. Later, it suggests Strike Storm, a 7 AP, six-hit attack that can build multiple Charges on Critical Hits. These are one outlet’s progression recommendations, not universal best-in-slot choices or confirmed current-version rankings.

Choose skills and weapons for the encounter
There is no single build established by the official materials. Compare options by what they do for your party and the fight in front of you:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Charge generation: Consider hit count and Critical Hit opportunities if you want to reach Overcharge sooner.
- AP cost: Weigh the cost against how quickly you can use the skill. Sandfall says characters normally gain 1 AP per turn, and successful parries can provide AP.
- Damage or support: Decide whether Gustave should focus on attacking or use a skill that buffs allies.
- Weapon stats and element: Match the weapon to its scaling and the enemy’s weaknesses rather than assuming one weapon is best everywhere.
- Survival and encounter needs: Consider whether you need to stay alive, deal with a particular enemy mechanic, or conserve resources for a later threat.
Gamer Guides favors Lanceram for its reported Physical damage and Vitality/Agility scaling, while noting that an elemental Fire weapon may help against early enemies weak to Fire. That is the guide’s preference for the progression it discusses, not a definitive choice for every character setup, encounter, or game version.

Use timed inputs to improve attacks and defend
Combat is turn-based when you select actions, but Gustave’s skills and enemy attacks call for real-time timing inputs. Sandfall Interactive calls this system Reactive Turn Based: a missed skill input can reduce the skill’s effect or, for some skills, cause it to backfire. Its explanation of the system is in the official gameplay overview.
On defense, dodging has a larger timing window and evades an attack; parrying has a tighter window, negates damage, and can trigger a powerful counter if you parry an enemy’s entire combo. While learning an attack’s rhythm, favor the more forgiving dodge; try to parry when you are confident in the timing or the possible reward is worth the risk. Free-aim at weak points and encounter objects
Do not assume every turn should be spent on a normal attack. The publisher identifies free-aim targeting of enemy weak points as a game feature, and Sandfall’s gameplay preview shows that shooting objects can change encounters: shooting flowers around Goblu can limit their buffs, while shooting floating mines attached to a Demineur can set off a chain reaction. Look over the arena and enemy tells before choosing an action; a targeted shot may be more useful than building damage against the main target. Official game information and gameplay preview
What to keep in mind about the recommendations
Sandfall’s combat descriptions come from preview-era official materials and establish the system’s broad mechanics, not a current patch-by-patch audit of Gustave’s skills. Specific Charge limits, AP costs, skill effects, and weapon preferences above are attributed to Gamer Guides; check the in-game descriptions for the version you are playing if a balance change could affect your build.
