Play Thief as a covert-acquisitions Runner: use its enhanced visor and Pickpocket Drone to find loot and gather information, then use the Grapple Device to reposition, follow up on an opening, or escape. The key trade-off is that piloting the drone leaves your Runner stationary, so choose your moment before activating it.
What Thief is built to do
Bungie describes Thief as “Covert acquisitions.” Its January 15, 2026 overview says the shell’s enhanced visor and piloted butterfly drone can locate and acquire loot, while its grapple can help push an advantage or make an escape. Those abilities point to a scouting-and-looting role with a mobility tool for acting on what you find—not a fixed combat rotation.
In practical terms, use the visor and drone to look for useful information and loot. Pilot the drone when you can afford to leave your Runner in place; save the grapple for a useful reposition, a chance to press an advantage, or a retreat. This is a practical approach inferred from Bungie’s description, not an officially prescribed or tested sequence.
How drone control works
When you activate Thief’s Ultimate, control and camera transfer to the drone while your Runner stays where it is. You cannot switch the viewpoint back to the Runner while piloting. Bungie Support says you can exit the drone early; otherwise, control returns when the drone’s duration ends.
#1 Best Overall
- CLASSIC GRAPHICS AND SOUNDS: Immerse yourself in nostalgia with classic graphics, music, and sounds that look just like the original Tetris arcade game!
- AUTHENTIC GAMEPLAY: Use the joystick and buttons to move and rotate the Tetriminos as they fall to complete lines and score points!
- FULL COLOR SCREEN: With a brighter, full color screen that makes it easy to see the blocks, you’ll be racking up points like a pro as you stack your Tetriminos!
- MARATHON MODE: Race to line up your Tetriminos in rows before they stack too high. Complete 10 lines to move to the next level. But watch out - the Tetriminos drop faster the longer you play!
- SHARE AND COLLECT: Arcade Classics are a must-have retro toy for collectors or for anyone looking to share this classic toy with the next generation!
Because your Runner remains stationary, consider its exposure before you launch the drone. Choose a position and moment that give you room to pilot without leaving your character unnecessarily vulnerable. This is a practical consequence of the documented control behavior, not a guarantee that any particular location is safe.
Choose a core for the utility you want
Thief cores are shell-specific and can change the shell’s abilities. Bungie’s overview gives two examples; they represent different priorities rather than a ranking of the best current build.

| Build priority | Documented Thief core effect | When it may suit you |
|---|---|---|
| Mobility and escape | A second Grapple Device charge | When you want another documented grapple option for repositioning or getting away. |
| Information while the drone is idle | The Pickpocket Drone periodically pings nearby enemies while it is not piloted | When passive threat awareness is more useful to your approach than an extra grapple charge. |
Implants are different from cores: they can be used by any shell and provide stats plus a random perk. Choose them to suit the stats and perk you want alongside your Thief core. Bungie’s overview does not identify an optimal implant set, so there is no sourced basis here for prescribing one.
Drone issues listed for Update 1.0.9
Bungie’s “Known Issues List – Update 1.0.9” names two Pickpocket Drone problems. The page is update-specific and says its list is not exhaustive; it does not establish whether either issue persists in every later version.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Audio can become muffled after you exit and re-enter the drone shortly before it ends.
- Using the drone near an indoor stairway can force you out and leave your Runner immobilized until the timeout ends.
These listed issues are distinct from the intended behavior in which your Runner stays put while you pilot the drone. Bungie Support also acknowledged a separate player report of being unable to control or exit the drone as unintended behavior it would investigate; that report should not be treated as the normal control flow or as proof of a widespread problem.

The cited official materials explain Thief’s role, two core examples, and how drone control is intended to work. They do not establish exact keybinds, cooldowns, damage values, a current optimal loadout, or the present status of the Update 1.0.9 issues. Check the controls shown in your game for your own input setup, and treat the listed core effects as documented options rather than a current meta recommendation.
