Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is optional context for 1666: Amsterdam, not a prerequisite. If you want to play it for Patrice Désilets’s earlier work, start with Assassin’s Creed II: Brotherhood follows that game directly. You can then move on to 1666 without completing the rest of Ezio’s story.
What to play first
For Brotherhood’s story, play Assassin’s Creed II first, then Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. The latter is the second game in Ezio’s trilogy and follows Ezio in Rome from 1500 to 1507. The game’s reference page describes its place in the trilogy and its setting.
- Assassin’s Creed II: introduces the events and character history that lead into Brotherhood.
- Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood: continues Ezio’s story in Rome.
- Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (optional): completes the Ezio trilogy, but is not needed to understand 1666: Amsterdam.
If you already know Assassin’s Creed II or mainly want to sample Désilets’s past work, you can start with Brotherhood itself. There is no need to finish the trilogy before trying 1666.
Why play Brotherhood before 1666?
The connection is creative, not established story continuity. Patrice Désilets was a creative lead on early Assassin’s Creed games and later directed 1666: Amsterdam. In a 2013 report, he described the project’s ambition at the time as “the new Assassin’s Creed.” That comment does not establish that the released game is an official Assassin’s Creed entry or shares its canon. Désilets has since characterized 1666 differently. In a 2026 interview, he said it is “a fantasy game inside an historical period,” distinguishing its magic and fantasy from Assassin’s Creed’s approach. The official listing describes Noa, witchcraft, and supernatural figures in Amsterdam. The Respec interview discusses that framing; the Steam listing gives the game’s synopsis.
There are echoes in the storytelling, too, but they do not make the games one continuous narrative. In a French-language interview, Désilets said players who liked his earlier work would find multiple temporal perspectives in 1666, with a book called the Nuxifier taking the narrative role that the Animus played in Assassin’s Creed. What changes when you move to 1666: Amsterdam?
Brotherhood follows Ezio in Renaissance Rome and centers on the Assassins and Templars. 1666: Amsterdam is a separate fantasy adventure set mostly in Amsterdam in 1666; its official listing also describes a 1999 timeline involving Aaron, who sees through a cat’s eyes. The games share a creator connection, not an established shared canon.
Choose a version of Brotherhood that fits your platform
The Ezio Collection bundles remastered versions of Assassin’s Creed II, Brotherhood, and Revelations. It can suit someone who wants the complete trilogy, provided it is available for their platform. If you already own a playable copy of Brotherhood, you do not need the collection just to prepare for 1666. Check the store for your specific console or PC before buying; availability and compatibility depend on platform.

Know what to expect from 1666’s Early Access release
As of 4 October 2026, 1666: Amsterdam is listed on Steam in Early Access, with a release date of 25 August 2026. The Steam page says the initial campaign segment is expected to take approximately 15 hours and that the developers estimate Early Access will last about a year, with major content updates. Both figures are developer estimates, not guaranteed playtime or a confirmed final-release date. The listing also says the game is not complete and may change during development.
For the practical question of play order, there is no special Brotherhood mission, ending, or collectible you need to reach before starting 1666. Play it for Ezio’s story or to see more of Désilets’s earlier work; approach 1666 as its own game.
