Blood Bowl 3 is a turn-based fantasy football game: coaches alternate team turns, take actions with individual players, manage the risk of turnovers, and try to score touchdowns. The tabletop rules below are a useful way to understand the core loop, but they should not be treated as confirmation of Blood Bowl 3’s current live ruleset or every digital mode’s settings.
First, know which rules you are using
Cyanide describes Blood Bowl as a turn-by-turn sport and strategy game. On 29 December 2025, the developer announced that Blood Bowl 3 would evolve into Warhammer Blood Bowl through a free 2026 update, with existing purchases and unlocks carrying forward. That announcement is a plan, not confirmation that the update has shipped; the official pages reviewed identify 2026 as the release year but do not establish a release date or the game’s exact live ruleset. Check the current game and its update notes before assuming the video game follows the tabletop edition exactly. Cyanide’s announcement
The current tabletop product is Blood Bowl: The Official Rulebook – Third Season Edition. Games Workshop says it contains the rules, League and Matched Play instructions, team rosters, star players, and inducements. Its May 2026 designer FAQ and errata adds clarifications, so tabletop players should consult it alongside the book. The match sequence below is drawn from a secondary-hosted Third Edition rules reference, not an official guide to Blood Bowl 3’s live implementation.
How do turns work in Blood Bowl?
In the standard tabletop sequence, a match has two halves and sixteen team turns in total: each coach gets eight turns per half. The kicking and receiving teams alternate turns until a touchdown or the end of a half. The team with the most touchdowns at the end wins. Digital modes may use different settings, so check the mode’s instructions in-game. Third Edition game sequence reference

Players act one at a time
During a team turn, the coach chooses players to act one at a time. The core action types are Move, Block, Blitz, and Pass. The reference limits each player to one action during that team turn, with at most one Blitz action and one Pass action for the whole team. A Blitz combines movement with one block; during a Pass action, the player moves before attempting the pass. These are the basic actions, not a full list of special actions, skills, or exceptions. Why the order of actions matters
Because a turnover can end your turn before every player has acted, consider the actions that could fail before committing to them. A safe movement or block may be worth doing before a risky attempt to pick up or pass the ball, depending on the situation. This is a planning principle, not a guarantee of success or a universally optimal tactic.

What causes a turnover?
A turnover ends the active team’s turn early. The Third Edition reference lists examples including a player being knocked down or falling, a failed catch by a teammate, a failed ball pickup, a touchdown, or the team turn’s time limit expiring. If one happens, players who have not acted may lose their opportunity for that turn. Third Edition turnovers reference
These examples do not cover every skill, rule exception, or digital-game implementation. For a disputed edge case, check the current rulebook and errata for tabletop play, or the current in-game instructions and update notes for Blood Bowl 3.

How do you score a touchdown in Blood Bowl?
Under the cited tabletop rules, a touchdown is scored when a player finishes an action standing in the opposing team’s End Zone while holding the ball. Simply entering the End Zone is not enough: the player must still be standing and carrying the ball at the end of the action. The coach then moves the score marker. The team with more touchdowns when the match ends wins. Third Edition scoring reference
A practical order for a beginner’s turn
- Check possession: identify which team has the ball and where the carrier is.
- Plan the safer actions: consider movement and blocks before actions that could risk an immediate turnover.
- Choose when to handle the ball: decide whether to attempt a pickup, pass, or scoring run, keeping in mind that failure may end the turn.
- Check the scoring condition: for the tabletop rule described here, the carrier must finish an action standing in the opponent’s End Zone.
This order is a teaching aid based on the action, turnover, and scoring rules; it does not guarantee a successful play. Rules and mode-specific exceptions can differ in the digital game.

Where to check the complete rules
For tabletop Third Season Edition, use the official rulebook for the full rules, rosters, and competition material, and pair it with Games Workshop’s latest FAQ and errata. For Blood Bowl 3, use the current in-game instructions and official update notes for the live rules and the mode you are playing. The available official announcement does not establish that the planned 2026 transition has shipped or that the video game’s rules are identical to the tabletop Third Season Edition.
