There is no verified, universally easiest Blood Bowl team for a new coach. Choose by the style of play you want to learn, how much roster complexity you want to manage, and whether you like the miniatures—and check that any roster advice and box you buy match Third Season rules.

What Blood Bowl team should I start with?

Blood Bowl is Games Workshop’s tabletop fantasy-football game, played with teams represented by miniatures. Its overview names Humans, Orcs, Elves, Dwarfs, Ogres and Undead among the available teams (Games Workshop’s Blood Bowl overview). Humans and Orcs are two familiar options to compare, but the available official material does not identify either as the easiest team for beginners.

Games Workshop’s 2025 team-tier document ranks teams for competitive purposes; it is not a beginner guide or a measure of how easy a roster is to learn (2025 team-tier document). A competitive tier therefore cannot answer which team is best for your first matches.

How do I choose a Blood Bowl team?

Use these questions to narrow your choice rather than treating any list as a difficulty ranking:

#1 Best Overall
Games Workshop 99120909001 "The Gouged Eye Orc Blood Bowl Team Miniature Game
  • The Gouged Eye Orc Blood Bowl Team
  • This box contains 12 horrible plastic Orc Blood Bowl players 2 blitzers, 2 throwers, 2 Black Orc blockers and 6 linemen
  • plastic miniatures
  • This kit comes unpainted and requires assembly
  • What do you want to learn? If you want to explore a broad range of actions and roles, look for a roster that offers variety. If you prefer to practise a more specialized plan, prioritize a team built around the style that interests you.
  • How much roster complexity sounds enjoyable? Distinct roles and special rules can mean more to keep track of. Check the current roster and rules before judging how demanding a particular team is; the available sources do not establish a current team-by-team complexity rating.
  • How do you feel about mistakes? A claim that a team is forgiving or punishing depends on its current roster mechanics. Without a verified comparison of those mechanics, it would be misleading to rank teams by resilience.
  • Do you like the miniatures? A retailer’s general advice is to consider both play style and model appeal. That is useful personal-choice guidance, not an official Games Workshop beginner ranking (retailer advice on choosing a team).

For example, compare Humans and Orcs by the roles, rules and miniatures in the specific Third Season products you are considering. The official sources establish both as Blood Bowl options, but do not provide enough current roster detail to say that one is easier to learn.

Check Third Season rules and box contents before buying

Games Workshop’s 2025 event rules direct team drafting to the Third Season Official Rulebook (2025 Third Season event rules). Use that rules context when evaluating a team, rather than relying on older roster advice without checking whether it still applies.

Games Workshop also says the number of roster positionals for the new season will match the contents of the team box (roster changes for the new season). Before purchasing, confirm that a listing is for the edition you want and that the miniatures in the box suit the roster you plan to use. A Blood Bowl Third Season starter set or a separate team box may be relevant, but the sources here do not verify any particular listing, seller, price or availability.

A practical first-team decision

  1. Pick two or three teams whose miniatures and general play styles appeal to you.
  2. Check each team’s Third Season roster and rules in the Official Rulebook; note the roles and special rules you would need to learn.
  3. Choose the roster whose learning curve and play style sound enjoyable to you, rather than relying on a competitive tier placement as a beginner rating.
  4. Before buying, verify that the product listing matches Third Season and includes the miniatures you expect.
