You can play classic Nintendo 64 racers on Switch with an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Open the Nintendo 64 game library software, choose a title, and use its operation guide to check the controls. A special N64-shaped controller is optional.
What you need to play N64 racing games on Switch
- An active paid Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo says the N64 collection requires this membership tier: Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
- The Nintendo 64 classic game library software, available through the console’s HOME Menu. Nintendo’s support guide to classic game library software explains how to find and start it.
- A compatible controller. The dedicated Nintendo 64 Controller for Switch is not required; check the in-game operation guide for the current button mapping.
How to start a classic N64 racing game
- Confirm that your Nintendo Account has an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
- From the console’s HOME Menu, open the Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online or Nintendo Classics library software available in your region.
- Select a game from the library and start it.
- Open the game’s operation guide to see how its controls map to your controller.
Game availability can vary by region and change as the service’s catalog is updated. Nintendo’s U.S. N64 collection listing currently names Mario Kart 64, F-Zero X, and Wave Race 64; check the library on your own console for the titles available to you.
Which N64 racing game should you choose?

Nintendo’s original manuals explain the games’ modes, but use the current in-app operation guide for Switch button mappings. Manuals: Mario Kart 64 and Wave Race 64.
Do you need the Nintendo 64 Controller?
No. Nintendo designed the dedicated N64 Controller for N64 classic software, but it is optional. Nintendo also warns that compatibility with other Switch games is not guaranteed. You can play with another compatible controller; consult the game’s operation guide for its mapped buttons.

Pairing the dedicated controller
- Open the console’s Controllers menu and choose Change Grip/Order.
- Press the controller’s Sync button and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Menu labels and connection options can differ by console model; Nintendo’s controller connection support provides model-specific guidance.

Open Mario Kart 64 from the N64 library, choose the game’s online play option, then follow its prompts to invite friends or join a session. Nintendo describes online races for up to four players in its 2021 announcement. That claim concerns Mario Kart 64 online play; it does not mean every mode in the original manual has an online equivalent.
