The easiest way to play a classic PC RPG is usually to use a current edition that explicitly supports your operating system. If none is available and the game was made for DOS, DOSBox can emulate the PC environment it expects. The right route depends on the exact game, edition, and computer: no single fix guarantees every old RPG will run unchanged.
Choose the route that fits your game

Check the game’s own storefront page before installing or buying. Steam advises checking both the game’s hardware requirements and operating-system compatibility; client or storefront requirements may add constraints beyond those of the original game. Steam’s compatibility guidance.
Start with a current edition when one is available
A modern digital release is often the least work because its publisher or storefront may have already packaged the game with a compatibility layer and documented supported systems. Treat that evidence as specific to the edition listed, not as a guarantee for every release of the same game.
For example, GOG’s Ultima 4+5+6 listing says the collection is powered by DOSBox and lists Windows and Mac OS X support. Its changelog records Windows 10 and 11 compatibility verification on 20 March 2025. The listing also notes a special macOS limitation for Ultima IV. Check the listing’s current platform notes for the edition you intend to use.

Use DOSBox for games made for DOS
DOSBox emulates an Intel x86 PC environment, including components such as sound, graphics, mouse, and joystick, so many DOS games can run on modern computers. Its DOS-like prompt is sufficient for installing and starting many DOS titles. It does not run every PC program, and it should not be treated as a general compatibility fix for games written for old versions of Windows. See the DOSBox project and its v0.74-3 manual.
Install the emulator that matches your system
DOSBox Staging’s current installation guide describes builds for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its stated requirements are 64-bit Windows 8, 10, or 11; macOS 12 (Monterey) or later on Intel and Apple silicon; or a modern x86_64 Linux distribution on a laptop or desktop released after 2010. Those are requirements for DOSBox Staging, not a promise that every game will work on those systems. Consult the DOSBox Staging installation and getting-started guide for current instructions.

Some storefront games ship with their own private DOSBox copy. Installing DOSBox Staging separately does not replace or update the copy bundled with a storefront edition; use the package’s instructions unless you have a reason to configure a separate emulator.
Mount the game files or disc
DOSBox does not automatically expose folders or drives from your computer to the emulated environment. You must mount the relevant game folder or media inside DOSBox before its DOS prompt can access it. The manual covers mounting directories and CD-ROM media. Start with the game’s own guide where possible, because install commands and folder layouts vary by title.

- Identify whether your copy is a game folder, CD-ROM, or disc image.
- Install DOSBox or DOSBox Staging using its official guide, then consult the game’s instructions for the correct mount and install commands.
- Start with the emulator’s default settings. If the game needs adjustment, change one setting at a time and consult the manual’s guidance on mounting or cycle controls.
- Save your game progress often while experimenting, so a configuration change or failed launch does not cost a long session.
Decide whether original discs need an optical drive
If your copy is on CD or DVD, the computer needs a way to read that media. DOSBox’s manual describes mounting CD-ROM media; whether you need the disc during installation, startup, or play depends on the game. If your computer has no optical drive, an external USB DVD drive is an optional way to access original discs. It is unnecessary for a digital edition.
When the game still will not launch
- Check the edition first. A storefront release may have separate platform notes or fixes from the original disc version.
- Confirm the game is actually a DOS title. DOSBox targets DOS programs; an old Windows game needs guidance for that specific title and edition.
- Recheck the mount and media. A DOS prompt cannot use a host folder or disc until it has been mounted, and the game may expect a particular directory or CD-ROM setup.
- Change settings gradually. If a game’s instructions recommend adjusting emulated cycles or another option, change one value at a time so you can identify which change helped or caused a problem.
- Use edition-specific support notes. Broad compatibility claims cannot establish that every classic RPG works on every modern operating system.
Keep the game and setup understandable
If preserving the original files matters to you, keep a copy of the installer or disc image where permitted, along with the game’s manual and any setup notes you rely on. Record changes to emulator settings so you can restore a working configuration. For a specific recommendation, the exact title and edition—and your operating system—are essential.
