Before buying a classic RPG, check the exact Steam or GOG listing for the game and edition you want. Confirm its operating-system support, system requirements, edition and included content; then compare the two stores for offline access, language and other features that matter to you. An old game, a reissue and a remaster may differ substantially, so neither the title’s age nor the storefront alone tells you what you will get.
Start with the exact game and edition
“Classic RPG” can mean the original release, a reissue adjusted for newer systems, or a remaster that changes graphics, controls or more of the underlying game. Those are not interchangeable purchases. Read the listing’s edition name, description and update notes, and check whether it names expansions or other bundled content.
For background on the distinction and the compatibility work older releases may need, CHOICE’s guide to classic games explains that a seller may make fixes or provide setup instructions; depending on the title, compatibility mode or an emulator such as DOSBox may be relevant. That 2018 guidance is not a guarantee for a current operating system. Use the current product page for the game you intend to play.
Check whether it will run on your computer
Open the listing for the exact edition and inspect its supported operating systems and minimum system requirements. Confirm that the listed platform matches your computer, and look for title-specific compatibility updates or verification notes. A broad claim that a game is old, popular or available on a particular store does not establish that your specific edition will work on your setup.

For example, GOG’s Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura listing identifies the game as Windows 11 verified and describes Windows 10 and 11 compatibility verification. Its update history says changes dated 13 November 2024 included DDrawCompat support for modern displays, one-core affinity, a fix for an Alt-Tab black screen, stability validation and Windows 10/11 compatibility verification. These are details about that listing, not a promise about other GOG games.
Steam listings also provide title-level requirements and features. Search results surfaced Windows requirements and Steam features for Fallout, and the Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition listing described support for modern Windows, macOS and Linux. Check the current page for the game you want rather than relying on a search snippet or assuming another title has the same support.

Compare Steam and GOG on the points that affect your purchase
Store-wide assumptions are a poor substitute for comparing the two product pages. Use the same game and edition on each, and check the following before checkout:

GOG’s Arcanum page is a useful illustration of why the individual listing matters: it says the game can be played without online activation and offers an offline installer that does not require GOG Galaxy. The same listing specifies English audio and text and includes a 190-page manual, artwork, wallpapers, a map and a reference card. Do not assume that another GOG game—or a Steam edition of the same title—has the same access terms or extras.

Make the choice based on what you value
If avoiding a client or playing without an internet connection is important, verify the exact listing’s activation and offline-installation terms. If you care most about a particular operating system, language, remaster changes or bundled manual, make that the deciding comparison. When one store’s page documents a fix or feature that the other does not mention, treat that as a difference in what the pages establish—not proof that the unmentioned feature is absent.
Before paying, confirm the package contents and current purchase terms on the checkout pages for your region. Prices, availability and refund policies are volatile; there is no reliable general rule that one store is always cheaper, more compatible or more complete.
