What can a PS5 actually play?

PS4 compatibility is a different system. Sony says more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS4 and PS5, in digital or disc form, as described on its PS4 and PS5 compatibility page. That does not make the original PS1, PS2, or PS3 disc for the same game compatible; it means a specifically supported PS4 edition can run on PS5.

Compare the routes on five practical points: whether the exact game is offered in your region, whether it downloads or streams, whether you pay an ongoing subscription or a one-time purchase, whether access can disappear from a catalog, and how closely the version matches the original. A controller by itself does not provide access to a classic game, and owning the old disc does not substitute for one of these supported listings.
Check the Classics Catalog on your PS5
Use this route when you want a game included with a current PlayStation Plus catalog rather than a separate purchase. Because menus and plans can change, use the game’s current listing as the final authority.
- Identify the exact game. Write down the title, original platform, and any subtitle or edition. Remasters and similarly named sequels can appear as separate Store products.
- Confirm your account region. Catalog selection and benefits are tied to the country or region of the PSN account. The US pages are not a guarantee of what another country offers.
- Open the catalog. From the PS5 Games home screen, select PlayStation Plus, open Benefits, and choose Classics Catalog. This is the path in PlayStation’s support instructions: How to access the PlayStation Plus classics catalog on PS5 consoles and PS4 consoles.
- Search for the title. Use the catalog search or browse by platform and genre. Open the game’s own page rather than relying on a search-result name.
- Read the access buttons. If the page shows Download, the catalog provides an installable version. If it shows Stream, play occurs from Sony’s servers. Some games show both options.
- Check the membership requirement. On the current US PlayStation Plus page, Classics Catalog is a Premium benefit: PlayStation Plus games, catalog and plans. Your local plan names and benefits may differ.
- Review the listing before committing. Note the platform label, access method, region, and any indication that the game is leaving the catalog. This prevents renewing a plan for a title that is no longer included.
- Install or start the game. Choose Download and wait for installation, or choose Stream and allow the service to establish a session. A catalog entry is service access, not a permanent purchase.
Download versus stream: the practical difference
When Download is available
A downloadable classic is installed on the PS5 like other digital software. You still need the membership or entitlement shown on the game page, and the title can become unavailable if Sony changes the catalog. Downloading it does not convert the catalog copy into a separately owned Store purchase.
Downloading also avoids the bandwidth demands of continuously sending gameplay from a remote server. It does not, however, remove the entitlement requirement: if access is tied to an active plan, the installed catalog software remains subject to that plan and the current listing.
When Stream is the only choice
Streaming runs the game remotely, so you do not install the full classic locally. PlayStation states that streaming requires a broadband connection with a minimum speed of 5 Mbps. For supported games and 1080p streaming, it lists at least 15 Mbps. These are published service thresholds, not a promise that every home connection will feel identical.
PlayStation also warns that queues may occur. A fast connection cannot bypass a full streaming service or a temporary account, regional, or service outage. A connection that meets the minimum can still feel less suitable if other household activity competes for bandwidth or if the service is busy.
PS3 classics are streaming-only
Even when a PS3 game appears in the Classics Catalog, the catalog route does not provide a PS5 download for it. PS3 classics are streaming-only under the support guidance. This is why a PS3 title can be present in the catalog while offering no download button. If local installation is essential, look for a separate PS4/PS5 release instead of assuming the catalog will add one.

Functions and devices that streaming does not support
While streaming a catalog game, PlayStation lists several unavailable features and peripherals. Do not plan a stream around:
- Broadcasting
- Share Play
- Share Screen
- Remote Play
- PlayStation VR
- PlayStation Move
- Mouse or keyboard input
- Third-party controllers
The precise restrictions can depend on the service and game, so the warning shown before launch takes precedence. If a particular accessory or social feature is important, check those limitations before choosing a streaming-only title.
What to do when the game is not in Classics Catalog
Search the PlayStation Store for a modern edition
- Open PlayStation Store on the PS5 and search the exact title, including its subtitle.
- Check every result’s platform label. A PS4/PS5 digital edition, remaster, or remake is a separate product from the original disc.
- Read the description, screenshots, and edition name to confirm it is the desired game and not a soundtrack, add-on, sequel, or bundle without the base game.
- Verify availability and price for your account’s region before purchasing. No single current price can be stated without a named title and country.
- Compare the version with the original you remember. A remaster or remake can be a distinct release, so check the product description rather than assuming identical presentation or content.
- Download the edition shown as compatible with PS5 and launch it from the Game Library.
An absent Classics Catalog entry does not prove that a game has never been reissued; it only means that the current catalog search for your region did not offer it. Conversely, finding a Store page does not mean the original PS1, PS2, or PS3 disc will unlock that digital version.
Use a compatible PS4 release
Some older games are available as PS4 editions rather than as “classic” catalog entries. Sony’s compatibility information covers more than 4,000 PS4 games across PS4 and PS5. If the title has a PS4 disc release, insert it only in a PS5 model equipped with a disc drive; a digital-only PS5 cannot read a physical disc. If the PS4 edition is digital, obtain it through the Store or your Game Library.
Look for the exact PS4 version in the game’s listing. A PS4 remaster may change resolution, controls, music, content, or trophies compared with the original, and the evidence for those differences is specific to each title. Do not assume that a PS4 label means an untouched emulation of the original. Likewise, do not assume that a PS4 disc and a digital PS4 listing have identical purchase requirements on every account; follow the edition shown for your region.

Can a PS5 play PS3 discs?
No general original-disc route is provided. If the game appears in the Classics Catalog, PS3 catalog versions are streaming-only rather than downloadable.

Do not expect that behavior. A disc is useful only when the specific edition is supported by PS5 compatibility. An original PS1, PS2, or PS3 disc is not a general license for a Store or catalog version.
Region, membership, and catalog changes
Availability is not universal. PlayStation says catalog selection and benefits vary by country, and games can be added or removed. The US pages establish Premium inclusion for the US service; they do not establish the plan name, price, or game list for every other market.
Prices also depend on the route and your market. The practical comparison is an ongoing subscription for catalog access versus a one-time Store purchase for a particular edition. Since no single price applies to every game or country, check the signed-in Store page and the local PlayStation Plus plan page instead of relying on a price from another region or an older article.
Before renewing a subscription for one game, open that game’s listing while signed in to the account that will play it. Confirm all of the following:
- The title is visible in your country’s catalog.
- Your plan includes the displayed Classics Catalog benefit.
- The entry offers the access method you need: Download, Stream, or both.
- The game has not been announced for removal or placed behind a different entitlement.
- Your broadband connection is suitable if streaming is the only option.
- The edition, language, and platform label match the game you intend to play.
Subscription access continues only while the applicable membership and catalog entitlement remain active. If you want access that does not depend on catalog retention, compare the Store’s separate digital edition or a supported PS4 purchase instead. A purchase still gives you the specific modern release listed for sale; it does not validate an incompatible legacy disc.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The title does not appear in search
- Search the full title and omit punctuation or subtitles, then try the original platform name.
- Check that the PSN account’s country is the one whose catalog you expected.
- Search PlayStation Store separately; a game can have a Store release without being in Classics Catalog.
- Do not infer compatibility from a listing in another country or from an old article.
- Check for a remake, remaster, or PS4 label instead of searching only for the original platform name.
There is a Stream button but no Download button
Treat it as a streaming-only entry. This is expected for catalog PS3 games, and it can also occur for other titles where Sony has not provided a local download. Check the 5 Mbps minimum, the 15 Mbps threshold for supported 1080p streaming, and the unsupported-feature list before starting.

The stream is queued or unstable
A queue can occur even when your connection meets the stated speed. Stop other high-bandwidth activity, use the most stable connection available, and retry later if the service reports a queue or outage. If the game has no Download option, changing console storage will not turn it into an installable title.
The PS4 disc is rejected
Confirm that the disc is a PS4 release, not the original PS1, PS2, or PS3 version, and that your PS5 has a disc drive. A compatible PS4 edition is a separate compatibility case from an old-generation disc.

The game disappeared after you subscribed
Catalog inclusion can change. Recheck the current listing for your region and membership. If the title is no longer included, look for a separate Store edition or compatible PS4 release rather than assuming the entitlement is permanent.
The listing looks right but the button is unavailable
Open the full product page while signed in to the intended account and check the plan and region shown there. A search result can resemble the desired game while representing a different platform, edition, or entitlement. If the page offers only Stream, follow the streaming requirements rather than troubleshooting downloads that the listing does not provide.

Is streaming available at any internet speed?
PlayStation states a minimum broadband speed of 5 Mbps for streaming Classics Catalog games and at least 15 Mbps for supported 1080p streaming. Those thresholds do not guarantee identical results in every home.
Can I use Remote Play or Share Play with a streamed classic?
