On a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, download the Nintendo Classics software from Nintendo eShop, open it with an account that has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and select Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream. The standard Nintendo Switch Online tier is enough; the Expansion Pack is not required.
You can play after downloading even when the console is offline, but Nintendo requires an online membership check at least once every seven days. Library contents can change, so treat the current listing as availability for your region rather than a permanent ownership purchase.

| Can I play offline? | Yes, after downloading the software and game, provided the membership remains active. The console must connect online to verify membership every seven days. |

What you need before you start
A compatible console
The current service runs on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The game is delivered inside Nintendo’s NES Nintendo Classics software rather than as a separately purchased Switch game.
An account with Nintendo Switch Online
Use a Nintendo account whose user profile has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo describes the membership as providing ongoing access to a library of classic NES, Super NES and Game Boy games, along with added online play. Because access is subscription-based, the account used to download and launch the software matters.

Internet access for setup and periodic checks
You need an internet connection to reach Nintendo eShop, download the Nintendo Classics software and verify membership. After that, the downloaded games can run offline for a limited period. Nintendo’s rule is a membership verification at least every seven days, not a requirement to remain connected during every play session.
Storage and a controller
The console must have enough free storage for the Nintendo Classics software. Nintendo’s current classic-games page also advertises wireless NES-style classic controllers as member-exclusive accessories. A compatible controller is optional: the game remains playable with the controls you already use, while the classic controller is intended to provide a more traditional NES feel.
How to download Punch-Out!! on Switch or Switch 2
- Open Nintendo eShop. From the console’s HOME Menu, launch Nintendo eShop.
- Choose the correct user. Select the user profile associated with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. If several profiles are on the console, do not assume that another user’s membership automatically applies to the profile you selected.
- Find the NES Nintendo Classics library. In eShop, locate the Nintendo Switch Online NES/Nintendo Classics library. Nintendo’s support instructions identify this library as the place to obtain the classic-game software.
- Select “Free Download.” Start the download for the Nintendo Classics software. The download is included with the appropriate active membership; it is not a separate purchase of the individual NES title.
- Wait for the software to finish installing. Keep the console connected until the download completes. The Nintendo Classics icon will then be available from the HOME Menu.
- Launch Nintendo Classics. Open the NES Nintendo Classics app from the HOME Menu. The app presents the NES catalog available to your account and region.
- Select the listed game. Choose Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream, then start the game. The title may be described conversationally as the original Punch-Out!!, but the current NES listing uses the Mr. Dream name.
If the software does not appear immediately, return to the HOME Menu and check the download status before attempting another search. A title being absent from a search can also reflect the selected user’s membership status or the catalog offered in your country.
How membership affects access
The standard tier is sufficient
NES games are part of the base Nintendo Switch Online classic-game benefit. You do not need the Expansion Pack to access the NES Nintendo Classics library. Nintendo describes the Expansion Pack as adding other systems, including Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, GameCube and Virtual Boy; those additions do not turn the base NES catalog into a separate requirement.

Access continues only while membership is active
The software can remain installed on the console, but the right to use the library is connected to the account’s active membership. If that membership expires, the subscription benefit no longer authorizes play. Renewing the membership and completing the required online verification restores the condition Nintendo specifies for access.
Offline play has a seven-day verification window
Nintendo states that classic games can be played while you are offline, provided you have an active membership and verify that membership by connecting online every seven days. This makes the service suitable for travel, commuting or locations with unreliable connectivity, but it is not equivalent to owning an unrestricted ROM or cartridge. Before a trip, open the Nintendo Classics app while online so the console has a recent verification. If more than seven days pass without a check, reconnect the console and allow the membership status to be confirmed before launching the game again.
What game is included?
The NES release is titled Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream
Nintendo’s current classic-games listing uses Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream. That wording identifies the NES release available through the service; it is the name you should look for in the app rather than assuming a generic search for “Punch-Out!!” will always display the same result.

Its core boxing system
Nintendo describes the game as a one-player boxing title in which Little Mac faces opponents such as Glass Joe, Soda Popinski and Super Macho Man. The instructions focus on reading an opponent’s patterns and using jabs, body blows, hooks and uppercuts to find a weak spot before delivering a knockout blow. The appeal is therefore not simply rapid button pressing: progress depends on recognizing tells, timing attacks and responding to each opponent’s opening.

Regional naming and catalog differences
Nintendo’s legacy information identifies regional versions of the game, so a listing or release history in one country should not be treated as proof that every region has an identical catalog. Check the Nintendo Classics library shown to the account in your own country. The appearance of the Mr. Dream title in Nintendo’s current listing is the relevant confirmation for the modern service.
Why the Nintendo Classics app is the legal modern method
The Nintendo Classics app is Nintendo’s own distribution channel for the NES game. It pairs the software with an active Nintendo account subscription and the supported Switch hardware, giving Nintendo control over the licensed catalog and the account’s entitlement.
Downloaded ROM files from unofficial sources, unlicensed reproduction cartridges and a modified console are not equivalent methods documented by Nintendo for a new player on modern Switch hardware. They can also introduce separate copyright, authenticity, security and account risks. If your goal is a supported way to play on current Nintendo hardware, use the official app and membership route rather than treating an independently obtained game file as a substitute.
What happened to Wii, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions?
Nintendo’s Punch-Out!! information records earlier official releases for NES, Wii, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Those entries are useful for identifying the game’s release history, but they do not create a current purchase path on modern consoles.

The March 27, 2023 eShop cutoff
Nintendo states that, as of March 27, 2023, it was no longer possible to make purchases in Nintendo eShop for Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. Consequently, readers who did not buy those Virtual Console versions before the cutoff should not expect to open the old storefront and purchase them now. The historical entries may still matter to people who already have the relevant hardware and an earlier purchase, but Nintendo’s page does not present them as a new-purchase option after that date.
Why an old purchase is a different route
An existing Virtual Console purchase and a current Nintendo Switch Online entitlement use different systems. The former is tied to a legacy console and its purchase history; the latter is tied to an active Switch Online membership and the Nintendo Classics app. Do not assume that owning the Wii U or 3DS release automatically adds the game to a Switch account, or that a Switch membership recreates a legacy purchase on discontinued hardware.
Choosing between the current and legacy options
Choose Nintendo Classics if you have a Switch or Switch 2
- You want to play on hardware Nintendo currently supports.
- You are comfortable with membership-based access instead of an individual permanent purchase.
- You need the ability to play offline after a periodic online verification.
- You want the simplest setup for a new player.
Use a legacy copy only if you already own the required setup
- You already possess the relevant Wii, Wii U or Nintendo 3DS hardware and an earlier legitimate purchase.
- You specifically want the historical Virtual Console release associated with that system.
- You accept that Nintendo’s Wii U and Nintendo 3DS storefronts no longer accept new purchases.
For someone starting today with a current Nintendo console, the first option is the documented route. The legacy choices are preservation or existing-owner scenarios, not alternatives that can be newly bought through the closed Wii U or 3DS eShops.

The Nintendo Classics app cannot be downloaded
- Confirm that the selected eShop user has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Check that the console is connected to the internet and that eShop can load normally.
- Return to the Nintendo Switch Online NES/Nintendo Classics listing and look for the “Free Download” option rather than searching only for the game title.
- Verify that you are using the account and country whose catalog you intend to access; Nintendo’s classic-game availability can vary by region.
The game is not visible inside the app
- Make sure you opened the NES Nintendo Classics software, not a different classic-system application.
- Check the title under the exact listing Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream.
- Confirm that the user who launched the software is covered by the active membership.
- Allow the app to connect online so the latest entitlement and catalog information can be loaded.
The game worked offline but now will not start
Reconnect the Switch or Switch 2 to the internet and let Nintendo verify the active membership. The offline allowance requires a verification at least every seven days. Also confirm that the membership has not expired; an installed app alone does not establish an active entitlement.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
You expected the Expansion Pack to be required
It is not required for this title. The standard Nintendo Switch Online tier includes the NES library. The Expansion Pack matters only when you want its additional system libraries and benefits, not for Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream.
You cannot find a Wii U or 3DS purchase button
That is expected after Nintendo’s March 27, 2023 eShop cutoff. Those storefronts no longer accept new purchases for the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family. An old listing or release-history page should not be interpreted as a currently open store.
Controller choices and play setup
The game does not require a special controller. Use the standard controls available with your Switch or Switch 2. Nintendo also advertises wireless NES-style classic controllers as member-exclusive accessories. They are optional hardware for players who prefer a layout and shape reminiscent of the original NES; buying one does not replace the Nintendo Classics software or the active membership requirement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor practical play, keep the console recently verified before using a controller away from home. If you plan to remain offline longer than a week, schedule an internet connection before the seven-day window closes. This avoids confusing a controller or software problem with an expired membership check.
Availability can change
Nintendo says classic games are generally available while the membership is active, while also noting that availability may change over time. The listing visible in your country on the day you set up the service is the authoritative check for your account. Do not describe the game as permanently owned, promise that it will remain in the catalog indefinitely, or assume that another region has the same selection.
As of October 16, 2026, Nintendo’s current library page lists Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream among the NES classics. Recheck that page and your regional Nintendo eShop before subscribing specifically for this title, because membership terms, regional catalogs and accessory stock are all subject to change.
