To play with a friend, use Red Dead Online: join the online mode, form a Posse together, then choose an available mission or activity. The main Red Dead Redemption 2 Story Mode campaign is a separate play context, not the documented co-op route. Rockstar separates Story Mode and Online Play in its Red Dead Redemption 2 support hub.
Can you play the Story Mode campaign co-op?
No co-op campaign route is documented in Rockstar’s materials cited here. Story Mode and Red Dead Online are separate modes; for shared play, start Red Dead Online instead. If you want to experience the authored campaign together, these sources do not establish a way to do that.

How to play Red Dead Online with a friend
- Enter Red Dead Online. Choose the online play context rather than Story Mode.
- Group up in a Posse. Invite your friend or join their Posse using the game’s available invite and Posse features. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.06 notes document Posse invites and matchmaking with Posse members.
- Choose an online activity. Select an available mission or activity that supports your group. Not every activity is established as co-op in the cited materials, so check its in-game description.
Exact menu labels and button prompts can differ by platform and may change. Rockstar’s cited notes confirm the general Posse and matchmaking features, but do not give one current, button-by-button invite sequence for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
Verified example: Moonshiner Role Co-op Missions
Red Dead Online includes co-op missions. One specific example is the Moonshiner content: Rockstar’s Title Update 1.15 notes describe five Moonshiner Role Co-op Missions, launched by speaking with Maggie in the Moonshine Shack after purchasing the shack. This is one documented option, not a claim that every mission or activity supports co-op.

Do you need to own Red Dead Redemption 2?
Rockstar’s Title Update 1.24 notes say Red Dead Online became available as a standalone purchase in 2020, listing PC, Xbox One, and PS4 at that time. That historical announcement does not confirm current store availability, pricing, regional terms, or platform online-service requirements.
